Jim,

Thanks for your response to my post. I accept your reasons for what you do
and have recommended.

However, for all my applications, I stand by my statement. For me, many,
many, many installations as I described have worked, and continue to WORK,
LIKE A CHAMP. I have done loss measurements and also checked for the
possible problem you propose. In all cases, nary a problem. YMMV.

I suggest that you MEASURE the effect before you say that it "works like
a champ." There are HUGE differences between what you suggest as
opposed to multiple turns of the coax around five #31 cores. Your choke
is inductive, so it can resonate with a feedline that is capacitive by
virtue of its length. The ferrite choke is resistive, has a MUCH greater
choking impedance, and cannot resonate with the feedline.

Can any of you topband gurus/big guns contact 4A4A /T30RH/N0TG/CYO and ask
them to spread out . Last night was a zoo .

4A4A 1824 up 1 to 2
T30RH 1826.5 never did hear up or down
N0TG/CY0 1826.1 down 1 -2

does not work very well - guys sending Up Up because someone calling another
station on top of T30 etc etc . Cant tell the players .

Topband: T30RH signals last night

2011-03-08 Thread Tomas Magyla
T30RH signals on 160m were significantly stronger last night than the
night before. The band has got a bit busy with the crowds calling
T30RH and 4A4A.. Hope many of the top band gang have been able to work
Jacek& Jacek. Sorry to hear about the challenges on site, something
hard to imagine for most of us in our comfy armchairs!
The team is doing FB job, wish them all the best

Topband: T30RH

2011-03-08 Thread Ryszard Tymkiewicz
I'v got at last longer e-mail from Jacek...so a few details :
The first place which was booked was rented for a long term and they could not
get it. They proposed another one which
had not enough place for antennas at all.
Another hotel Otinatai was waiting for them but after watching from the
outside, it turned out that there is no space
for antennas larger than 40m! They had to look for something else. They were
taken to the resort, supposedly the best on the island.
This is QTH used previously by N1MEC and T30R. It looks great for tourists but
antenna conditions are difficult.
The antenna is located in good place practically in the ocean, but erecting it
was very risky, blowing 24 / 7 strong Passat is
making difficult even walking, let alone putting the 18m antenna!
Because of all this work with antennas he has crippled feet ...has problems
with walking , has sunburn and is cold...
The area has very limited space for antennas and so far Jacek was not able to
make 40 or 30m antenna..for receiving he made FO0AAA
loop but it is almost the same as vertical but is picking interferences when
other Jacek T30AQ is active...even they have Dunestar
filters.
Internet is VERY slow 4kB/s...and very expensive..
As I wrote previously on Wednesday the antenna box blow up and Jacek is not
able to use his vertical on 80m...several times
a top hat was disconnected ( heavy wind) and Jacek was repairing it during a
night...
The noise level on both antennas ..vertical and loop is about 1S but QRN is
S8-9 ...during nice weather! Because of it
Jacek has problems to copy stations transmitting fast CW...PLEASE USE THE SAME
SPEED AS HE IS USING..18 WPM !
He is trying to be each his SR and SS...also SS/SR in EU / US ...unfortunatelly
Jacek can't sleep too much as other station
T30AQ is active only SSB and they are in the same room
They also learned that they must leave their Bwia (hut) for 2 days and move to
another, it creates additional problems, but luckily
they do not have to remount the antenna on 160m but others, unfortunately, yes.
A second vertical -for 80m (12m) is mounted and tuned for SSB ...maybe it will
be tuned for CW bandlater.

Charles,
I also use the same choke construction as Tod, K0TO.
Six turns through 5 Fair Rite No. 31, 2.4" dia ferrite cores.
Works very well, essentially zero loss and no heating issues.
Note, put the Pl-259 on after you make the choke coil or you
will be able to only get about 4 turns !
