Hi Steve,

I highly recommend that you check into this EXCELLENT website for answers to
your queries re. radial fields:

http://www.antennasbyn6lf.com/2009/12/series-of-qex-articles-on-ground-system-experiments.html

Rudy has done an absolutely stellar job documenting his experiments in this
regard...I think you'll agree after having read through his articles contained
therein.

Re: Topband: Receive ant question

2011-10-26 Thread Mark Beckwith
I think a front end protector is some good amount of insurance. I listen on
other receivers while transmitting. I have cooked an IC746PRO doing this
and it was quite annoying. It tricked me into thinking everything was fine
because it worked okay for a good long while, but ultimately I cooked it and
felt like an idiot.

Re: Topband: JD1BME Minami Torishima QSL card for 160m

2011-10-26 Thread Bernie McClenny, W3UR
Steve and Topbanders,
JD1BME is a legitimate call, which I know definitely operated from
Ogasawara (OC-073) and QSLed. I'm 99.9% sure the 2007 activity,
supposedly from Minami Torishima, was bogus. I worked JD1BME on 80 in
January and sent a direct QSL to the JA QSL bureau and have never
received a QSL or notification back.

Topband: Pseudo Inverted L & Radial Field

2011-10-26 Thread Steven Raas
Hello everyone,

I have on my makeshift Inverted L about 21 Radials ranging from 60' long to
20' all fanned out from the feed of my antenna out to my property edges.I am
tuning the 'L' in shack with a tuner, as without it.. SWR is approaching 2:1
I do realize laying radials on ground detunes them, however considering none
of them are even close to 1/4 wl on 160 my question is this:

1) Would adding a a pair of 130' radials that are bent (running TO property
edge and then along property edge) give me any real world performance
difference? Would I have to add say 4 , 8 or 16 of these to make it worth
while in ADDITION to the existing radial field.?

If any one has further questions as to the current antenna set up pse chk my
QRZ page.. as I have some photos explaining the exact layout of that antenna
and radial field. ( Ive already had many comments abt the 'antenna support
structure @ the rear of my Shed in my yard, I know its close to power
lines.. I know the dangers.. Im willing to take that risk @ the
moment.. actual antenna wire is in the order of 8' away from the power
lines..yes 8'.. its a city lot.. I have to make compromises, and I
do appreciate the concern)

Re: Topband: Need help feeding tower on 160 AND 80

2011-10-26 Thread Brian Machesney
Thanks for all the responses.

One respondent recalled hearing of success with a similar setup on the
Towertalk reflector. By searching the archives for "shunt bands" I found an
"existence theorem" at:

http://lists.contesting.com/archives//html/Topband/1997-12/msg00194.html

I followed the prescription to connect the gamma wires for the two bands to
different tower legs, then realized that I had made a serious mistake by
failing to reduce the tower-to-gamma wire
spacing for the 80m feed.

With these two changes, I am able to get the desired behavior on both bands,
by switching from one series cap to the other.
