Topband: Antarctica QSOs
G'day It has been interesting reading about the QSOs with Antarctica. Probably my most best 160m QSO ever was on 9 July 1999, when, along with Mike VK6HD, I worked Mike Fokin, R1AND from Novolazarevskaya Base, Antarctica, just before sunrise here. You may ask what was surprising about this QSO, as Antarctica shouldn't be difficult from Australia. R1AND was on the far side of Antarctica from VK6 - and subject to the usual huge propagation problems in getting a signal across a polar area. I think Mike 6HD had also heard and worked R1AND also a week or so earlier. Neither of us ever heard R1AND's signal again on 160, despite him being quite active. Our (K6XT, XYL W0MOE) condolences to Mike's family. I really enjoyed chasing TB DX and being on chat with Mike. I have received word that Mike Elliot, KQ0B, passed away Wednesday afternoon. I have not received anyother information. In the last few years, Mike was very active on 160. He has always been very active on 80 thru 10 meters. Our prayers go out to his family. Price W0RI ___ UR RST IS ... ... ..9 QSB QSB - hw? BK
Topband: Meaning of AGC "Delay"
Dear All, I am looking at the AGC parameters on the FTdx9000D. Yaesu uses the term "delay" but does not define the term. Other manufactures use the term "attack" time which I understand to mean how quickly the AGC reacts to a signal at the "threshold" level. "Hold" time means the period of time the AGC voltage remains constant at the peak level once the AGC is activated by a signal above the threshold. "Decay" is the rate at which the AGC voltage is reduced (gain increased) once the "hold" time expires. So, two questions: 1. Does anyone know for sure what Yaesu means by the term "delay"? Does it have the same meaning as the "decay" time? Different authors uses different terms to mean the same thing but do not define the terms - leading to confusion. 2. When we adjust the AGC "delay" on a Yaesu rig, what are we doing? Thanks for any clarification. 73, Bob AA6VB ___ UR RST IS ... ... ..9 QSB QSB - hw? BK

Re: Topband: Antarctica
Hello Gavin Yes, I see your Antarctic call VP8GAV in my top band log on October 19, 1992. Also the Russian Antarctic Base, 4K1AFM in my October 1991 top band log. I also see several Qs with HF0POL during these times. Believe this one counted as S Shetland. Regarding current RI1ANF activity. I thot someone listed his QTH as King George Is, which would count as South Shetland Is rather than Antarctica? 73 George W8UVZ I was active as VP8GAV from Antarctica and made a few QSOs on 160, vast majority in 1992. I just sorted my log by band and it breaks down like this : Total 207 EU94 NA79 JA2 ZL1 AF 6 The rest are SA. Still got cards if you need one and they are in LOTW. BTW I also need Antarctica on 160, but got Oleg RI1ANF this week for a new one. 73 Gavin GM0GAV On 01/06/2012 11:41, Bernie McClenny, W3UR wrote: > VP8ANT - April 1983 > VP8CTR - July 1997 > EM1HO - July 1997 > > > Bernie McClenny, W3UR > The Daily DX - The Weekly DX > Get a free two weeks of The Daily DX and The Weekly DX > http://www.dailydx.com/trial.htm > Follow The Daily DX on Twitter - https://twitter.com/#!/dailydx > > -Original Message- > From: topband-boun...@contesting.com > [mailto:topband-boun...@contesting.com] On Behalf Of > donov...@starpower.net > Sent: Thursday, May 31, 2012 9:53 PM > To: topband@contesting.com > Subject: Re: Topband: Antarctica > > Worked R1ANN > DXCC ANTARCTICA (13) > Date 2005-04-03 > Mode CW (CW) > Band 160M > > 73 > Frank > W3LPL > > ___ UR RST IS ... ... ..9 QSB QSB - hw? Re: Topband: Solar cycle 24
At one point this week there were six sunspot groups visible on the sun. Five were in the sun's southern hemisphere! This suggests that we may have reached (or close to) the peak of this cycle. Or at least the first of a double peak. This is ten months or so earlier than predicted. Bring on the next Solar Minimum!! (Sorry about that, Non-Topbanders). Re: Topband: Antarctica
Just to show how things have changed, when Richard VP8ANT (G3CWI) was at Rothera Base with the British Antarctic Survey, one of his topband activities was an entry in CQWW 160, in which he made a creditable number of contacts given that January is Antarctic summer. But in those days there was no satellite or email. Martin G3ZAY (his QSL manager) and I had to copy all the QSO details over 20m SSB and then submit the log on Richard's behalf! Topband: VO1HP - Skimmer reports last night.
Still testing the Inv L with K2AV FCP. Quite a bit of activity last night with QSO's G, IK5, OK7, N4 , K1, K3 Skimmers in Eu hearing good signals running 600W and the K2AV configuration. See pictures at www.vo1hp.ca No radials on the ground at all just the L (45+10ft V / 65ft H) working against the FCP. So is this working or what?
