Topband: HS0ZKX QRV

2013-11-11 Thread Bob Kupps
Hi I just heard from Peter HS0ZKX now QRV with 500W to a vertical and a couple
of reversible beverages, and he reports top band is open to the East coast
around 1200Z. And he's an easy QSL! GL 73

Yes Peter worked 8 stations from the US yesterday including several from the
east coast (W4ZV, K4ZW, K4SV). The time was around 1130Z. I got to the party
a tad late but was able to hear him and put in a few calls. That is the third
time I have heard HS from the Mid-Atlantic. The other two times were HS0ZEE
running 100 watts. Hope to hear and more importantly work you Bob!

Good luck, Rick! I expect that it will require a good bit of sleuthing to
find the source(s) - but then, eliminating the source is another matter
entirely, if it's coming from a neighbor!

Re: Topband: Steady Carrier on 80 CW

2013-11-11 Thread mstangelo

Rick,

Thanks for the detective work!

What is the recommended frequency on 80 meters for beacon operation? I could
not find it on any bandplan.

You think the frequency selection is stupid? Take a look at their
objective. --Super Slow CW. 10 hours for a QSO.

What a stupid frequency for a test beacon of any type!

 Good evening all,

Hate to burst the theories, but it appears the carrier on 3501.6 MHz is
a QRSS beacon operated by W4HBK.

I used Spectrum Lab and selected the 1-second dit in the Quick Settings
tab, Slow Morse Reception (QRSS) menu selection. The carrier drops about 6
Hz from the space to the mark and decode with the eye. Inter-character
spacing is a dit, intra character spacing is a dah both are on the
space, or higher tone. Idle period is also the space tone.

I dropped W4HBK an e-mail to get further information on this beacon ... he
is also operating a QRSS beacon on 30 meters. His reply was:

Hi, Rick. Tnx for the report. I am using an eight second dot period
and transmitting on a frequency of 3500.8 with a frequency shift of 5 Hz.
You can see details of my mept at my blog:
 http://pensacolasnapper.blogspot.com/2011/07/my-new-dds-mept.html

It is built around the DDS VFO kit sold by N3ZI and amplifier kit from
 W8DIZ. Power is 1 W to a 43 foot vertical.

Oh, his QTH is Gulf Breeze FL, near Pensacola.

And now, back to our regularly scheduled program.

Re: Topband: Wanted - Hardline connectors

2013-11-11 Thread Bill Wichers
Just FYI, the jacket is probably polyethylene (PE) and not vinyl. Most outdoor
cabling used by the telecom industry will have a PE jacket since it holds up
very well over time. The only reason I mention that is that the PE jacket won't
self-extinguish, it's flammable and will spread a fire around. Commercially
codes require a transition to a cable with a flammability rating within 50 feet
of building entrance for this reason. For ham use it's not a big deal, but it
is something you might want to be aware of.

Also, critters *CAN* chew through the stuff! It'll take them longer, but those
@#%!~ little critters can chew through just about anything!

Side note: on one of our recent fiber runs that was just lashed up aerially,
there was a squirrel sitting on the cable chattering at me when I was doing an
inspection drive-by. Crazy little guy was probably getting ready to chew the
cable up before we even finished building the system...

My fiber crews like to say that the only truly effective squirrel guard is a
.22 :-)

I think 50 ohm aluminum hardline is excellent for long runs without a lot of
bends. It's very stiff but also very tough. The vinyl jacket that covers the
shield is 1/16in thick (total diameter 5/8), and the aluminum tube is
 virtually
varmit proof. My version of the cable has a solid copper inner conductor,
.161 diameter, so losses are very low. I have a 500 ft run from my 160m
vertical to the junction panel at my tower, and another 200 ft of heliax to my
station. The antenna and radial field has been under construction throughout
the summer, and this afternoon some friends are coming by to help me erect
the 26m Spiderpole. With luck, I should be on the air with it this weekend.
