Re: Topband: Topband Digest, Vol 157, Issue 54

2016-01-26 Thread Mike Irizarry
Good morning. Mainly just a reader of this groups postings because my
experience with 160M is a drop in the bucket relative to the collective
experience of the members of this group. I'm a newbie for sure. Anyway, I
wanted to share I was able to work K5P this morning thanks to everything
this group shared about best times, bearing, etc. Here is my story and
condx for what its worth:

Could not sleep. Was up at 2am this morning! Went to the shack. fired up
the rig. Saw activity on 160m. Was k5p. Very small pile up. set everything
up as recommended-tuner, amp, rx antennas--k5p barely audible. 30 minutes
in could start to hear their call. Fired off my call twice and heard them
respond AB4KJ 599. Was 99 percent sure of a qso. Just checked club log...in
the log on 160! My condx: k3/p3, expert 2K, Inverted L for tx with tuner at
the base of inverted L, dx engineering 4 square in diversity mode with 500'
beverage using dx engineering ncc-1. Running about 1000 watts. The inverted
L is about 45 feet vertical and the rest horizontal. Pretty good radial
systemlike 60 radials from 50 to 100 feet each. K5P signal lasted for
me here in the midwest for maybe 30 minutes. I had already worked them on
80M. I have been hearing them very well on 40M but can't get thru the pile
ups and the deliberate jamming has been really bad, unfortunately.

The following update is from EA5RM, Toni Gonzalez

Today at 21:20 UTC, Nigel Jolly, Braveheart owner, declared an emergency
and ordered to VP8STI team to cease all operations and return to the ship.
A large
ice flow that had broken away due last nights storm starts to block the
entrance
to the Bay where they were camped. There was strong potential for the ice
flow to prevent
Braveheart to get them.

Team is now safely aboard the Braveheart and they are moving
away from Southern
Thule Is. All the equipment and personal gear is still on the island. They
hope to
return to camp site during next good weather window. Once they retrieve
their equipment,
they could make a determination as to whether they can proceed to South
Georgia to do VP8SGI
as planned.

I heard K5P and a JA a little over an hour ago (but didn't try and work
them). Nice signals, both of them, on 580' Beverages SW and NW.

Re: Topband: K5P

2016-01-26 Thread Don Kirk
K5P was very strong on 160 meters this morning around 0830 UTC and QRN was
very low (no static crashes due to the lack of thunder storms in the US),
and I finally got into their log running my 100 watts and 68 foot base
loaded vertical. I uploaded another recording of them calling CQ this
morning to document just how solid they really were on 160 meters, and here
is a link to the video for those interested.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDUK4CsJb9g&feature=youtu.be

Looking at my pan adapter there were numerous stations calling K5P during
this recording which K5P apparently did not hear.

Thanks to the entire K5P crew, and based on clublog it looks like I owe
K9CT a big hug (shows him as the operator I worked).

They're having one difficult time doing this DXpedetion. I'm going to
add some extra when I do the OQSL, if that can't do the next stop at
South Georgia, this is surely going to be a financial setback for
them.

From reading the post describing the potentially problematic ice flow,
it could be days (or longer) before that could be attempted. And, I'd
bet that everyone is super bushed by now. Hopefully seas are now calm so
they can recover some energy.

Yes, we all need to dig deep to support these guys. I'm going to do that
when I do the OQRS thing. I didn't make it on Topband, but I'm in the
log for six bands, including QRP on 20CW.

The link on DXNews.com does not quote the source of this info so I'm not
sure it is "official" and from one of the pilots (EA5RM) or other person

It may just be rumor and speculation.

This two word description "Camp dismantled" could mean most anything.
Dismantled by the wind, or dismantled by the team members, or maybe
dismantled by the penguins. If they got back to the island it would
deserve more than a two word summary of activity. Seems like a quote
from someone that didn't know anything.

2016-01-26 Thread Herbert Schoenbohm
Great News from the amazing Dima, RA9USU (KP2P) I would bet that if the
rest of the group doesn't want to do South Georgia Island that Dima
would love to be at least dropped of their for 30 days and with a rig
and some antennas. South Georgia seems to be a bit more user friendly
with a village, buildings, warehouses and a even a church and some
permanent inhabitants. It is much close to Port Stanley which a return
to "civilization" via the Falklands would work. I have no idea what is
going though the team leader's mind right now but I would imagine that
they are considering such a venture if some of the team are just to
fatigued by the incidents at Thule Island and want to scrub the
remainder. I can hear Dima saying in his low guttural voice "vell yust
drop me off" and " I will finish the mission myself." Thousands of us
will hit the donate button again to fund the return of Dima and anyone
else who wants to join him on South Georgia back to Port Stanley. Just
a wild thought.

It may be quite a bit more than that. From the reports, their tents got
pretty beaten up by that storm. They are pretty light weight tents, not
designed to hold up to the wind. There may be other issues with antennas
and gear.

It's our turn to patiently wait for their decision. In the meantime,
anyone feeling flush can go to their website and hit donate -- last I
looked, contributions have covered less than 75% of the costs they
projected at the beginning of the mission.
