Moreover, if you contributed DURING the operation, they got their LotW list
updated and your QSOs were QSL'd on LotW within a day of your online
donation.

They clearly had the IT portion of the project nailed.

If you contributed prior to the operation, your Qs were almost immediately
uploaded to LOTW. My 160m Q was confirmed on LOTW about 10 minutes later
once I recovered from the joy of seeing “You just made a QSO with VKØEK,”
pop up and thought to upload an ADIF file.

Impressive indeed and likely very expensive to maintain the satellite link
to enable this feature.

outstanding.

Absolutely agree Dave. I am sure those who didn't make it in the log
probably feel differently.

When I made my QSO on 160 - it was my first QSO with them. I had no idea
about how their web page was setup to show QSOs that occurred in the past
minute or two. I brought up the web page - and my jaw hit the floor when I
saw a world map - with a line from their QTH to mine with "N6TR" in the
box. This was very reassuring to say the least. I found the QSO in my
LOTW confirmations later that day.

Very impressive!!

I was able to use system to determine they busted my callsign - nearly in
real time - on 20CW. I was able to make a second QSO a few minutes later
and verify that they logged me correctly.

Re: Topband: VOA

2016-04-11 Thread Jim
Some years ago I worked for a government EMC laboratory (ECAC) in Annapolis,
MD. One of the problems we had to mitigate was over at the old Navy Transmitter
site on Greenburry Point. They ran 1.5MW ERP and the antenna was installed on
bedrock. Ground wave was Greenwich England. In any event the CO told us he was
having a problem with RF getting into his lighting in the transmitter room.
They had installed fluorescent lightening throughout the area in addition to
incandescent bulbs. Well in typical Navy fashion they went through the ritual
of darken ship whereby they turn all the white lights off and turn red lights
on. Well they told me they had to spend an hour taking all the bulbs out of the
lightening fixture for darken ship... well the didn't mind this but what really
ticked them off was they had to put them in the closet because they still
glowed and spoiled their nice red lights.

I spend some time chuckling under my breath with this. First because they were
on land and still going to darken ship and secondly because they used the wrong
kind of lightening in a transmitter facility but most of all because they had
stacked all the flourescent bulbs in the closet

What was the gain/beamwidth of these arrays ? The ERP must have been incredible
given the high power transmitters used plus the antenna gain . Migratory Geese
could have warmed themselves as they flew thru the region.

The Sterba curtain at the old Bethany, Ohio VOA had 20 dB of gain. I saw it
up close during a ham club trip years ago.

Hams that worked there would sometimes drive out next to it at night, and
connect their mobile transceivers to it for a night of DX fun.

The RF field in front of that antenna was so intense that one could
sometimes hear the program audio emanate from tiny arcs in a low, rusty
barbed wire fence along the road in front of that huge Sterba.

That enormous antenna, fed with huge Collins and Crosley transmitters
re-defined the word "awesome". :-)

Across the road from that fence were a number of newer houses, BTW. Helps
prove that shortwave never hurt anyone, doesn't it?

And for those that like to be closer to a lot of power while producing arcs:

Topband: #300 Small Lot DXCC

2016-04-11 Thread JC
Hi Top band lovers

Doug NX4D just reach a milestone on topband DX. #300 worked countries on
160m from 1/5 acre lot. Doug wants to motivate people about what is possible
with dedication and good practices.

>>

2003 I set myself a goal to someday work 300 countries and 40 zones on 160m
from this 1/5 acre subdivision lot. With Juan de Nova, that dream has just
come true.

By offering my radio services as Emergency Communications Manager of "The
Springs" subdivision, I have been given permission to put up my antennas.
The tower is 82 feet and the WF RX antenna is 50 feet wide.

I have lost most of three winter seasons due to power line and camper
trailer buzzes. I am not saying it is easy, but hope this will be
encouragement to the Little Guns out there.
