A grand solar minimum would be so disastrous for upper HF.
Although I'd very much enjoy working Asians on 12 and 10 meters again, it
now appears that may be less likely. OTOH it would be of some benefit to
have a quiet sun if the Earth's magnetic field is indeed ready to flip!

I first got licensed as a ham right between Cycles 19 and 20- so as a new
General class op in 1964 I was first exposed to dead minimum solar activity.
At that time, working into Oceania in the evenings on 20m was a pretty big
deal and often a surprise to a young, inexperienced ham. It sure made me
appreciate the higher bands when they reawakened.

Re: Topband: Antenna Switch isolation capacitor

2019-06-25 Thread Tim Shoppa
The Ameritron RCS-4 uses three .01uF 1kV disc capacitors in parallel in
this position.

I don't think 4 ohms of XC is a biggie in the antenna system SWR, but
increased current handling capability of paralleled capacitors is a real
advantage at legal limit.

The capacitor value is OK, but disc ceramics do handle current well.

Hi All,

A friend on 160 has had a problem with a Heathkit remote antenna
switch
due to a partial failure of the isolation capacitor in the remote
unit.
It is a .02 uF 1.6 KV disc ceramic that isolates the DC from the
antennas.

Since this results in about 4.4 ohms of XC - capacitive reactance in
series with the 160 TX antenna, I was wondering if it would it be
worth
while to substitute a .05 uF disc ceramic to reduce the capacitive
reactance (XC) to under 2 ohms on 160 meters?

 Thanks any info. 73,

 George, K8GG

Well Frank if they are wrong we can for sure never to call them experts
again. I also see NOAA does not agree with the Australians who think the
minimum has already gone through. Again only one winner. 73 Clive GM3POI

This article in Nature forecasts that we're approaching a grand solar
minimum -- similar to Maunder Minimum -- starting in 2020
and lasting for three solar cycles. I hope these scientists are wrong...

www.nature.com/articles/s41598-019-45584-3

An international panel of experts coordinated by the NOAA and NASA
released its preliminary s olar cycle 25 forecast in April, 2019 forecasting

that cycle 25 will peak between 2023 and 2026 with a sunspot number
between 95 and 130.

I hate forecasts, especially about the future...
