Topband: Geomagnetic storms likely to commence on 9 December, reaching strong storm level on 10 December

2020-12-08 Thread donovanf

Geomagnetic storm watches are in effect from 9-11 December , due to
coronal mass ejection (CME) effects from a direct CME collision with
the Earth's magnetosphere on 9-11 December. The CME eruption was
associated with a C7 solar flare erupting from Sunspot Region 2790
on 7 December.

www.swpc.noaa.gov/news/geomagnetic-storm-watches-9-11-december-2020

Arrival of a shock wave associated with the CME is possible late on
9 December, initially resulting in a G1 level minor geomagnetic storm.
As CME effects continue, geomagnetic disturbance is likely to increase,
especially if the magnetic field carried with the CME rotates to a
southward orientation, causing magnetic reconnection with the Earth's
opposite polarity magnetosphere.

The potential for strong storm levels exists and a G3 strong geomagnetic
storm level w atch is in effect for 10 December. CME-related
geomagnetic disturbances are forecast to continue through 11 December,
likely resulting in G2 moderate geomagnetic storm levels - and another
geomagnetic storm watch has been issued accordingly.

While SWPC forecasters are fairly confident in CME arrival at Earth,
timing and geomagnetic storm intensity are less certain. Continue to
monitor the SWPC webpage for the latest conditions and forecast.

Eric lives about 15 miles from me, I’ve seen these in person, pictures can’t
begin to tell the story !!!

NO3M has done some truly top-notch work with tube transmitters and I've
worked him using several of his "vintage homebrew" rigs on 160M.

They are BEAUTIFUL ! Check out some pics:

Topband: Good valve homebrew rig

2020-12-08 Thread Rob Atkinson
Are you sure you want to homebrew a vacuum tube _transceiver?_ How
about starting with a separate transmitter and receiver? A tube CW
transmitter for 160 is certainly feasible. A transceiver is too in
theory at least, but kind of a tall order. If you pull that off,
you'll certainly have my unending admiration, but I for one can't
recommend anything. A transmitter is different. What power level do
you have in mind?

Topband: Wednesday CW DX Activity Night

2020-12-08 Thread Roger Kennedy

A reminder once again . . .

There's been quite a few stations on 160 on Wednesdays the last few weeks
(from both sides of the pond).

So as Top Band conditions continue to be pretty good, hope there will be
lots of CW activity again tomorrow night !

Re: Topband: 3830 submissions for the ARRL 160 test

2020-12-08 Thread W3HKK
So far, 788 logs have been submitted for the 2020 ARRL 160 Contest
which strikes me as a big number.

Terrific domestic conditions provided a lot of entertainment here in
central Ohio.. I can only imagine what good cndx to EU-SA-CA might
have done for scores.

I guess thats what next year is for!

Hi!

I was wondering if anyone has a schematic for a good homebrew 160m CW
transceiver, using ideally valve instead of transistors.

Was hoping to build one during my next annual leave in February!

Thanks!

Re: Topband: ARRL 160m

2020-12-08 Thread David Olean
I missed you, Roger, I tried to get on Saturday and everything was
working great, but a bad storm was coming through with heavy wet snow.
There was all sorts of static and my TX antenna VSWR was going up fast.
The amplifier was not happy. I quit for dinner and then lost AC power.
It was off for a few days. When it came back, all my beverage receiving
antennas did not work. I went out to look them all over and they are all
broken with the wires under 10 or 11 inches of frozen snow that acts
like cement. There are so many trees down that I can not move around
easily. The roads are all blocked. I had 8 receiving wires and all of
them are wrecked. My TX antenna is loaded with frozen snow and ice. It
has not gone above freezing since.  I am QRT for awhile.

I thought conditions were fairly good, especially on Friday Night. The big
NA signals were peaking over S9 here in NorthEast England.

I spent about 3 hours in total on the band, and managed to work around 70
North American stations, including across to Florida, Virgin Islands,
Colorado and Texas.

I heard dozens more NA stations . . . but couldn't call them as they were
working other NA stations on their frequency.

Generally I was pretty pleased how well I was being received through the
local QRM. I think every station I called bar one came back to me.
