Re: Topband: CQ 160

2021-02-01 Thread Jeff Blaine
Not sure about the other KS stations.  But here in NW KS, if I don't
spin the HiZ RX circle 8 around to point to SW, I just won't hear AZ
unless the station calling is really strong or the prop is peaking or
something - enough signal so it's detectable over the other callers,
strong to the point that I will spin in that SW direction to catch em.

In the CQ 160, on a few hours of part time run with about 600 Qs total,
I worked a bunch of WA (NW) and AZ (SW) stations - but the majority of
callers are for the Midwest are in the NE/SE direction.  Suspect most
guys in the Midwest with directional RX have the same issue - you got to
point one direction and for unassisted guys running rate, that means
look east.  Guys in assisted or working S to find state mults will
seek out the lower population states off to the west because they are
equally valuable.

I do point SW/NW from time to time but after working the few callers out
that direction, point back eastward as that the bulk. I'm not much of a
CW contester so I suppose that guys wiht better op skills, better
wetwork between their ears, and better self-discipline may have a
different read.

Thank you as well.  I am not a contester and I'm also not the greatest CW op.
So I get on only sporadically and search and pounce, mostly looking for DX. I
made all of 145 Qs.  I used N3FJP's logging program and the map function that
colors in the worked states showed a big blank white spot through the middle of
the country and into the frozen north.   I didn't mean to rile up the ops in
those states who were on, we just never crossed paths.

While In London in 1973, I just HAD to pick up some sports jackets
along Savile Row.
Unfortunately, they didnt have any that fit me...and I didnt have time
to have them tailor them, so I bought three, figuring I could drop
10-15 pounds going forward.

Welll, I never did. So I still have those three very dapper brand new
sports jackets hanging in my closet 48 years later BUT if I can
lose 25-30 pounds, I'll be the dapperist guy I know.

Your success is appealing. You are The Man! The Top Pond-Crosser I
know!

I took a header in the kitchen to celebrate my 79th birthday on Dec
27th, and broke two bones in my left wrist/sprained thumb and wrist/
shoulder. My big feet got tangled up in the kitchen throw rug and I
went down onto the tile floor like a tree. So had to work the contest
with a soft cast on my left wrist, but still managed 816 Q's - 40
countries - 73 European Q's.

Did a lot more s'ing for Europeans and noticed how 160 is very fussy
from central Ohio.
Fri night saw a good short opening to S5 land and vicinity around
0300z. Any europeans I heard after that couldnt pull me thru the local
racket, altho I did work a handful of G/GD/GM/F at your sunrise. Sat
night was much easier pickings around 0300z , then it petered off
until around your SR when I worked a bunch of you chaps.

Ohio seems to get spotlight openings with maybe 1-2-3-4 Euros heard at
any one time. Try back 30 mins later and we hear another handful. etc
etc. With 0300z and your SR being prime time on a regular basis.

Best DX in the contest was ZM6T.

Going back 8 years, I see 12 Q's in my log with you - eight are
between 0130 and 0330z

Rig: IC7610-ACOM amp at 800w
Ant: 52 ft tall 1/4 wave INV-L w/26 radials between 30 ft and 130 ft
long depending on property line.
North radials are the shortest. NE radials around to NW are of the
70-130 ft variety.

Thanks for keeping the ether warm from your side.

Thanks to all for the Qs this weekend.
This was a good contest weekend for me. I did far better than ever before.
My personal best for one night in a 160 contest was 34 EU stations worked;
57 for the weekend. This weekend I worked 42 EU Friday night and 50 on
Saturday night for a weekend total of 92 EU, in 32 DXCC countries. In those
92 EU QSOs was one new one - GU, making 241 countries on 160. Plus, last
evening I snagged 9K. Not a new one, but certainly a rare one!
Notably missing were the usual suspects from JA and down under. I saw
numerous spots but had no copy.
I ran Single Op, High Power, Assisted, about 80% S Here are my totals for
just under 23 hours of operating:

Band QSOs StP DXC

1.8 831 58 45

Score: 269,654

I got all the states + DC, but missed 5 Provinces:

Equipment:
Elecraft K3s in full diversity;
Kenwood TL-922 running 750 - 900 Watts;
TX ant - Inv-L, 62 feet vertical;
RX ant - 2-El Hi-Z system.

Here in the south ( Florida) much the same propagation.. A few really
strong stations from EU ( one UA2F that was so strong as to be
suspicious) . The best EU signals were nearer their sunrise. Earlier in
the evening not so much, a handful of week  EU stations with deep QSB
were the norm earlier in both evenings. Like you NO Asia, SA or VK/ZJ.

Worked 46 states missed KL7, KH6, SD and ND ...no VE5 up in Canada...Odd
hole in the N. America prop no ND, SD or VE5 all right together
geographically...h???

EU wasn't so strong with the exception of

Sometimes the propagation Gods work &
sometimes they don't.

2021-02-01 Thread Roger Kennedy

Well I came on for a total of 3 hours on Friday night . . .

I thought conditions were fair . . . managed to work 64 NA stations, a total
of 23 States, plus Virgin Islands and Mexico. So was quite pleased with
that.

Also managed to get through the absurd contest pileup and work Mongolia and
Thailand.

Came on Saturday for half an hour, but conditions were at least 10dB down on
previous night. Plus I had already worked almost everyone I could hear -
managed about 10 more NA stations.

There were about 4 NA stations on throughout the Contest that were pretty
strong who didn't seem to copy ANY of the dozens of EU stations calling them
!

Oh and I did try calling CQ NA for about 15 mins . . . but I kept getting
dozens of EU stations calling me, so stopped doing that !
