Topband: Unsubscribing

2021-09-18 Thread Tom Boucher
Hello Greg,

Just to say thanks a million for the countless 160 metre QSOs we have had,
mainly at UK sunrise, over the past 15 years. Your remote station receiving
capability has always amazed me. I can imagine your frustration at hearing
and copying us so many times, when we were not hearing you. Sometimes it
was the other way round. Proof enough that one way propagation does exist
on 160.

I won’t be joining you on microwaves, but if you do decide to set up a 160
remote facility again in Cape Town, I will be listening for you!

We hope to visit ZS1 again when these travel restrictions are lifted and
when we do, we will certainly get together.

Best 73,
Tom G3OLB

I think the conditions in South Africa are not the main reason ..

We live in a very poor country and have a paltry pension, but we find
conditions for installing antennas.

I think you Greg just lost desire. Very sorry .

Hi all,

It is with some sadness that I have to tell you that this will be my
last post on Topband, after a presence of 24 years, including my
activity as ZS5K.

My wife and I are relocating back to ZS1 so that she can be with her
young family, and we are unlikely to be moving into a property from
which Topband operations will be a pleasure. I have had 17 great years
enjoying a good station with dedicated Rx antennas, and know that I
would be frustrated with 'city lot' type operations.

Instead I am in the process of constructing microwave equipment, and
have already had my first QSOs on 23 cm and 3 cm. I'm hoping that
enjoyment of the weak signal propagation modes on those bands will
replace the pleasure I've been fortunate enough to have operating on
160 m.

Thank you all for the great QSOs and good luck with your activities on
the Gentlemen's Band.

Hi,

I already commented but I will add that my present site is a 100 foot by
100 foot lot. I have a compromise inverted L and one radial. The L and
the radial (counterpoise) of necessity turn some corners, higher here,
and lower there. I don't have a world beater station on 160 meters but I
do occasionally get on there and give it try. Sometimes there are
surprises but we will not get any of those if we don't turn the radio on:)

Here, here!  I agree with Fred - don't give up on TopBand, Greg.  My
station and shunt-fed tower are on a relatively small suburban lot
(1/3 Acre) surrounded by all sorts of hash-generating devices.  My
original 160M antenna was an inverted L with one radial with which I
participated in the 1999 ARRL 160M CW contest.  I had a blast!

I consider TopBand a challenge because of my real estate limitations.
But most of us mere mortals have to live with similar antenna limits.
There are few of us with large Yagis up at 1/4 WL AGL on this band.
Enjoy uwaves, but please don't abandon 160M.

Greg,

me too live in a VSUL (very small unlucky lot) but I never give up.  I
founded a little radio club with some friends: I4AVG, IK4GME and I4EAT
(now SK) 25 Km north of my city.  It means I have traveled a lot during
the winter to reach an old country home full of antennas but also full
of cobwebs and mices. I have to calculate time, propagation, and also
check wheather because fog, snow or ice are a little dangerous, it would
be very foolish to destroy my car to make a new one... and I'm not
interested in a glorious end as a Homeric hero. Can I give you an
advice? Look for some friends interested in low bands, maybe the
solution is simpler than it seems, and maybe there is less fog in your
country.

GL!
