Re: Topband: S9OK 160m EU
Andy, You were a fairly solid 529 into Central KY on my GAP vertical (Poor RX antenna). I gave you a few calls with no luck (apparently a bad TX antenna also :)). S9OK was just under the noise level. Work begins this weekend on a HI-Z 4-square :). 73, Bill WE5P Comfortably Numb > On Oct 6, 2021, at 00:03, Andree DL8LAS via Topband > wrote: > > Hey topbanders, nice signal from S9OK this morning in DL. Re: Topband: S9OK 160m EU
S9OK was light with me last night here in northern WI but I could copy. Listened to the pile up...up...upwith lots of east coasters calling from NA but hearing VERY few stations west of me. I was listening on an 80m vertical so less than ideal RX antenna. 73, Carl W9LF -Original Message- From: Topband On Behalf Of Bill Weaver Sent: Wednesday, October 6, 2021 8:33 AM Cc: topband reflector Subject: Re: Topband: S9OK 160m EU CAUTION: This email originated outside of the organization. Re: Topband: S9OK 160m EU
Bill, The HiZ antenna will greatly improve your hearing, especially with the weak ones. For a decent DX Tx antenna, I'd suggest an Inverted L. Make it as tall as possible with atleast 24 quarter wave radials. I'd use a minimum of 48, 135ft radials. Of course you can try 4 elevated radials. I was one of the few in the west that worked them last night. I have a Hi-Z 4 sq and a 72ft irrigation pipe vertical with 4 top hat wires and a tapped inductor at the base. I also have near 100 radials at the base. We have very poor soil here so ground losses are quite high without a good radial system. Good luck and have fun... Ray, N6VR/W7YA Near Prescott. Re: Topband: S9OK doesnt seem to hear the US very well
Two nights ago they were fairly strong around 0500z on 1832 but so was the QRN. Brutal copy. Last night they were much better copy but again at 0500z they didnt seem to be replying to NA stations, or any stations for that matter. I called for 20 mins with no luck. They also tend to QRX and QSY quite a bit, so Im guessing they have QRN and or power line noise issues on 160/80. (where I need them.) Topband: S9OK last night
Here in NC they were solid copy from about 2300Z until they moved to FT8. But I could not join those that made it through. Operator posted that QRN was bad. Went to be and set alarm for a bit before their sunrise. Got up and once again, loud. A few minutes later in the log! shortly after that (or perhaps just after that) they went qrt. Great effort for 160 given the low run rate. Very much appreciate their efforts. Re: Topband: S9OK 160m EU
Not hearing them either in CW or FT8 on 160 m. Was not decoding them at all on 80 m FT8, but did copy on 80 CW well after our sunrise. I’m not expecting to work S9OK on Low Bands Due to the time difference, they are on Low Bands for most of our daytime. On a positive note, I am starting to work EU (and English) stations around our sunrise, ~1950z. This is some time before JA sunrise. NA is starting to come in fairly well our evening, their sunrise, but Daylight Saving here means that I am in bed before West Coast sunrise. 73, Luke VK3HJ.
