Re: Topband: Any Chinese stations with Big Sigs operating on 160?

2024-04-02 Thread Michael Tope
When we tried operating in 160 meter contests from W6UE in Pasadena, it
was amusing to see the packet spots complaining about how deaf we were.
We were running a full size flat-top dipole at 90 feet. It apparently
worked pretty well as a transmit antenna. Using the 80 meter
inverted-vee for receive that was off the same 90 foot apex at more or
less a right angle to the dipole actually improved things significantly
(e.g. from really deaf to pretty deaf).

Here is an iPhone video of a Q5 "speaker copy" B7P calling CQ on 160
meters during the 2022 CQ WW SSB contest. I tried calling them (off the
video) with no luck whatsoever. I don't think they worked any North
Americans. By contrast, during the 2024 ARRL SSB contest, JA3YBK who was
also Q5 speaker copy came right back to me on the first call (I don't
think I have a recording of that QSO):

For the most part, the BYs STILL have not yet gotten to the point where
they hear most stations calling, including JAs. Most, especially some of
the louder big guns, are deafer than a doorknob, and it's far easier and
more productive to call and work just about any other Asian, like a JT,
XU, XV, 9M, etc.. I've found some of the easier-to-work BYs are the
weakest ones, perhaps because they locate away from noisy areas and
actually spend the time to LISTEN in between their CQs. A lot of the big
guns hardly even pause between CQs, and only answer loud UA0s, who
mostly live next door.

Re: Topband: Any Chinese stations with Big Sigs operating on 160?

2024-04-02 Thread W3HKK
Brutal QRN! Been lucky here in the country, have only had rare
occasions of heavy QRN. When I call the utility they come out within a
few weeks and I help them track it down. Usually an arcing lightning
arrestor on top of a pole. Thats a lot of their AC going to ground so
it behooves them to clear it up.

Im a cw/ssb guy ( no digital) and it seems like most hams are now on
digital modes most if not all of the time. Considering the noise we
face on 160, I can see the attraction.

The last one I confirmed was BG6SNJ 01-29-2022. But with the S9+20
powerline noise that the power company has confirmed but not fixed for
months, who knows what I've been missing.

Yes, the Chinese have really discovered ham radio in the last decade.
They were everywhere in CQWW CW.  I have topband QSOs with BY stations
as follows:

BA4TB - 2009
BH4IGO - 2017
BD4WN - 2019
