Hey Paul, Happy 80th anniversary . I started with 13 years old this fantastic hobby. Nice to hear you are still active !!...What an inspiration !!! 73 and take care. Doug, CO8DM - Original Message - From: "PAUL M ELLIOTT" To: Sent: Thursday, January 19, 2017 10:34 AM Subject: Topband: Made it! 80 Years a Ham Made it! 19 January 2017, is the 80th anniversary of my first ham license, Class C operating privileges with W5GGV as my call. Was 14 years old at the time. A little over a year later I upgraded to Class A. Many years later the Extra Class (with no added privileges) came along. Upgraded. Some years later the FCC announced that hams with an Extra Class license who had been licensed 25 years could apply for a two -letter call, no place on the application to request of a specific call. Was assigned W5DM. First rig made from junked Atwater Kent radio parts. First antenna was a wire going out a hole in the window screen to a tree. First DX was VK2SS on 40 m CW, September 1937. (An aside. There were no phone privileges on 40 m for USA hams). The VK2SS QSL card is hung on my wall. My card to him was written on a postcard (Great Depression=no money to buy QSL cards). Been fairly active over the years, except, of course, for WW II. If interested in WW II, you can do a web search on DD 792 for a small part of my history. The first 20 or 30 years I built my transmitters (all low powered) and receivers. Operated CW only until SSB came along. Then I built a low powered phasing rig. A BC-348H receiver was made dual conversion using 85 kcs (kcs then= kHz now) IF transformers from a BC 453 receiver. Had a blast working the world with a homebuilt "cubical quad" on 20 meters. Since then mostly CW. I may have made one small contribution to ham radio. In the April 1958 issue of QST, in Technical Correspondence there was a letter from me that, I think, was the first mention in a ham publication that the formula for determining the length of a "cubical quad" antenna was not correct. Since my measurements were made using a BC 348, a grid dip oscillator, and a 100 kcs crystal oscillator. I don't know whether I was just lucky to get as close as I did or did a fairly good job with what I had. In the early 1990s started out to get 160 m WAS from a 120 x 120 foot electrically noisy city lot (SE NM) with a long ( ~3/8 wavelength) but low semi-inverted L antenna. Ground radials of varying length in one 90 degree segment. Made 160 m WAS. Then started chasing DX. Now have 189 countries confirmed on 160 m, 324 on all bands. Age, not surprisingly, has taken its toll. CW now down to 20-25 wpm-at one time it was 35-40 wpm. Finger dexterity way down-has taken me over 3 hours to type this email. Physical realities remain physical realities--I am now a disabled, crippled old man. But--- No complaints-many people are worse off than I am. Topband: 160 and 80m antenna...
Hi Topbanders !!!; Finally I got an FCP isolation transformer for 160m...I am planning install a 160m Inv L + FCP...I am wondering if I can add 80m to this system. I know the 160m FCP isolation transformer only work on 160m but maybe adding a relay is possible to work on 80m. Any idea? Topband: Horizontal Waller Flag (Single or double)...
Hi, I have a 5 elem 6m yagi...the boom is 15 ft long... I have been reading about the Waller Flag...both version, Vertical and Horizontal. I would like add the WF to my 6m yagi or a single WF (one loop)...I know few hams around the world did it and there is no interaction. (PY1RO, PY2XB, etc) My tower is 50 ft high...I know it is too low for 160m but I can not install the Vertical version...my city lot is small and I have an Spiderbeam on top (abt 6 ft above the 6m yagi) any idea ? Topband: Reverse feed system...
Hi, I would like try the Reverse Feed System (N4KG antenna) on 80m. I have a 50 ft GROUNDED tower (isolated from the guy wires) and similar size of Rohn 25G.How much top loading I need If radials (4) are connected at 15 ft?... I have an spiderbeam on top but this antenna does not add any LOAD because all elements are isolated.Anyway, I have a 6m Yagi. 5 elem on a 15ft boom. The 6m yagi has all elem connected to the boom but the driven. I can install the 6m yagi on top of the tower about 4 ft below the spiderbeam. Maybe I need a larger 6m yagi to obtain enough loading ? Topband: Half slopers ???

Topband: Ground screen ????
Hi, Need some ideas from your side... I am trying to find a good solution for my 160/80m antenna. I am thinking about some kind of Inv L with an 80m trap as a radiator for both bands. But, what about the counterpoise...Unfortunately in my small city lot I can´t install radials and I can´t get parts for the FCP yet...what about a Ground screen ???...I have a galvanized roof...it is about 50 ft long and 16 ft wide...galvanized sheets are 3 by 8 ft long and all are bolted together. The roof is about 15 ft high. Can I use this roof as a ground screen for the 160/80m antenna ??? Here's the setup: I'm allowed one tower maximum 90 ft. The tower will be 90 ft of Rohn 55 using a K0XG rotating system with two rings. It will be guyed using fiberglass guys. There will be a bunch of HF VHF stuff on the tower. Three tribanders, two 12/17 meter Yagis, a 40 meter Yagi and way down on the bottom two 6 meter antennas. The tower sits on VERY uneven ground. Although the lot measures 12 acres, I am using only the top three and renting out the rest of the land to a farmer to keep taxes from being crazy high. The ground is pure alluvial red fine particle soil (no stones) and has a depth of about 6 feet before hitting rock. Since the east side of Hawaii gets at least 100 inches of rain a year it is usually pretty moist. I would assume the soil is at least average or better in conductivity. I can run ropes, wires etc off the tower at the 80 and 40 foot guy points, but can not connect directly to the tower since the tower rotates. The is no room for a rotating dipole on the tower for 80. I've used quad triangle loops before with the pointed end on the bottom suspended by wires and am leaning towards that since the ground is so uneven and the terrain difference would be a real negative for a 4 square (I think). On 160 I'm leaning toward a wire vertical suspended from a rope coming from the tower which would make the antenna about 65 or 70 feet tall and to compensate for that I would make it a T-top. For rx I have lots of room to run a 700 -900 Beverage to JA and another to EU/USA direction, so that isn't a problem. I do need suggestions for my 80 and 160 tx situation. Tom and all members of the list thanks for your ideas and time . I have a plan B: I added a BNC female connector in the rear panel of my old Yaesu, FT747 (It is an FT80C, the commercial version with metallic chassis) few months ago. I was using that BNC to feed an SDR receiver using the same antenna. If i add a SPDT switch also on the rear panel and RE-WIRE the BNC connection i can get an RX port in my old radio and can connect an RX antenna...like modern radios...Switch Pos A (main antenna at SO239)...Pos B (SO239 for TX and BNC for RX)...i made few mods to my radio, so, i know it very well... Maybe that will help...of course, i must add then an Front End Saver...still need a fast relay !!! Maybe the Plan A with a 5mS relay will be more easy...still need a fast relay too !!! 73Douglas, CO8DM "No creo que haya alguna emoción más intensa para un inventor que ver alguna de sus creaciones funcionando. In receive mode the collector-base junction would have substantial reverse bias and the transistor can be chosen for low collector-base capacitance. With a fast switch like a 2N708 or something similar the switching time will, of course, FAR outperform a relay closure time. This thread might have splintered. I was responding to this:

Doug - Your FT-747 only has one antenna input. It does not have a second receiver. It doesn't even have a receive-only antenna input. You cannot transmit and receive at same time. Why do you need a "front end saver"? If you are adding an outboard relay keyed from the amp control line of the FT-747 to allow you to have separate transmit and receive antennas, that's great. Any old relay with less than 10ms make/break time will work fine there. You still don't need a "front end saver", because your rig still cannot be hooked to both transmit and receive antenna at same time. Getting back to CO8DM's original question about a preamp to use with a flag. If the receiver noise level pops up and then drops when a receive antenna is connected and then disconnected, then it’s likely that a preamp may not be needed at all. When I first played with a coaxial loop, a preamp was necessary. Since going to a full size flag, I find that I seldom even bother turning on a external preamp. I do have a relatively short coax run of about 75 ft from the flag to the receiver. I’d try the flag first without building/buying a preamp and see how it plays. Re: Topband: RX antenna ???
I have 2 more questions: About the resistor: what kind of material???...carbon, right? and what power will disipate the resistor ? The 2nd questions is about the transformer: i have some binocular and toroids but small ones, BN-43-202 and FT50-43...maybe adding few FT50-43 can "BUILD" some kind of larger binocular...any idea? Any sort of loop you can put in, will be a superior receiving antenna to using your transmitting antenna. Most of the simple loops have a terminating resistor that is 400 to 1200 ohms depending on details. I use a K9AY loop. Different loops have different mounting and termination needs. Difference between 1000 ohms and 950 ohms for terminating resistor, is pretty inconsequential. Re: Topband: RX antenna ???
Thanks Tony, I am using an old Yaesu, FT747...it is only one antenna connector on that radio, so, i have to do a circuit for switching RX and TX antennas and also a preamplifier for the flag antenna...right??? 73Douglas, CO8DM "No creo que haya alguna emoción más intensa para un inventor que ver alguna de sus creaciones funcionando. Hi Douglas, I use Flag and Pennant antennas. The most room OI have for a beverage is 300'. The Flag and Pennants were always better. Tried Ewe's, but they are ground dependent. 1000 ohm should be close enough. If the receive antenna is close to the transmit antenna you may need to have a signal limiter on the receive input. Or maybe a fast acting relay to ground the receive antenna when transmitting.
