I agree and lets remember the ol'timers (old school?) made 160 what it is today from W1BB on up. They did it mostly without the aid of computers but with the use of electronic theory and formulas using a pencil. The antennas and practices are still in use today. 73, JimK2HN Gentlemen, Why choose to let what others are doing upset us, especially when there is not a thing we can do about it? Re: Topband: Top Band and JT65
I hate to weigh in on this since it's been beaten to death already but just another opinion. Over the years I've tried several digital modes starting with psk31. There weren't many signals on the band at that time but now I see there are many. Not to long ago I ventured into JT65 and JT9. Quite a learning curve for an Ol'timer. I considered all the digital operation as something new to learn for a change and enjoyed the learning part. Once I got everything running properly I would begin to loose interest. To me, just not the challenge of dxing mostly cw and ssb. Seems the biggest skill comes from the people who write the software like Joe Taylor or Peter Martinez. From that point you just click the mouse or type on the keyboard. Very impersonal at times using F key exchanges etc.. But, that's just ones opinion. Whatever floats your boat. Re: Topband: Tuner
Many thanks to all for your input on possible tuners. I decided to get a Ten Tec 238 and give it a try. A gentleman on Ebay was selling a complete TT station and was good enough to sell me the tuner alone at a reasonable price. It seems to be a long time favorite and with a little modification it should tune 160 fairly well. Oddly enough, years ago I had one of these and remember putting a new dial cord on it. Don't recall what happened to it. I know I didn't pay $800+ as I see TT new parent company is getting for the latest version. The prices these days for the high power tuners is unbelievable. I paid $325. for the 238 which electronically is very similar probably to the new version. From correspondence with the seller I am confident the tuner is ok. Topband: Antenna Tuners
Hello all,Would you have any recommendations for antenna tuners? Have been looking at the automatics, Palstar, Mfj, LDG At-1000Proii etc.. Have been using an old Dentron which doesn't have very close markings on the dials and getting tired of turning and adjusting. Another option would be another manual such as the At2k with more precise settings. I do quite of bit of band hopping and even on 160 my Inv. L is perfect on 1.830 but doesn't like going very far either up or down, hence the need for a little tuner loss. The automatics look pretty appealing but would appreciate any opinions from the group. Thanks Jim/k2hn _ Topband Reflector Archives - http://www.contesting.com/_topband

I don't want to start another "run" here but I was a bit disturbed last night after deciding to try for a new one, K5P. Guys all over the DX transmitting freq and one who must have fallen asleep with his finger on the send button. He must have sent his call sign for over a minute. I sent my call a couple of times but any possible return would have been covered by callers. So much for that. I don't get on as much lately with a shaky fist etc. and spend most time working on improvements but I can recall not to long ago that when a dx station was on 160 everyone would shut up when he picked a call. One of the reasons I liked the "Gentleman's Band". Seems to be a lot more people getting on 160 now I guess. Both are N750 types. You need a #6 lug, a short #6 screw (3/16th long), and some #16 bus wire plus a brass washer that Ameritron will have. The chokes come from Ameritron no matter where you buy them. Thanks Tom,Re. the lug, screw and wire, I'm assuming the capacitor I ordered from them will install with the lug, screw and wire that already exists? Didn't realize they had the washer also but will give them a call, possibly they can include it in the order. I did get the choke from them also. I also got one of F1BXL's parasitic suppressors he sells on Ebay. Hopefully all this will calm things down a little. If it is being driven with 50 watts or more and does not tune into a 50 ohm load, I'd carefully inspect the entire tank circuit and wiring of the tank. This includes the switch (as Herb suggested). Thanks to all. I will go over it again today. I initially started out on 160 and then moved on to other bands. On 160 I could not get any increase in grid current, it came up but no increase with plate tuning but may not have applied enough drive. Staying below the 200ma grid and 400ma plate and just shooting for 500-600 watts on all bands right now. I did go over the switch before using the amp and it looked good and also deoxit it. The only thing I changed was 115v to 220. Probably just operator error since it's been a while doing any maxing and dipping:)Jimk2hn _ Topband Reflector Archives - http://www.contesting.com/_topband

Re: Topband: RFI - and lots of it - final status
Electricians worked today on the house grounding the entrance panel and checking out all of the wiring. Now, everything is grounded to the panel. They ran a line from the grounding directly to the ham room ground bus, checked all the outlets for any reverse etc.. They talked about putting a separate panel in the ham room but I opted out for now. The interesting part of this is that the strong hash noise I reported earlier is gone. I have no idea why. When I reported the noise to the power company I did mention what I had found on the lines and It is possible the linemen stopped by when we were not here and did something, don't know at this time but have not heard back from the power company. The only other possibility is that one of the things the electricians messed with stopped the noise. I suppose it could be something as simple as tightening the wiring in the box etc.. Cost was $380. but worth the peace of mind and possibly saved my operating.Regards,Jim/k2hn _ Topband Reflector Archives - http://www.contesting.com/_topband
Topband: RFI - and lots of it
I have and electrician coming next week who says he will check things out and first of all ground the breaker panel to two ground rods 7 feet apart. I thought the grounding was put at the meter but he says they don't do that anymore. I think the old meter, before we had the new one put in had a ground rod beneath it but nothing now. The only ground I could find to the panel is a skimpy wire going to a water line. All of which looks corroded etc.. I know many dollars were spent on renovation and restoration of this place but I'm afraid to much emphasis was placed on cosmetic and not enough on electrical as I look more closely, pretty depressing. Well, at least it will be safer. Can't thank the forum members enough.Regards,jim/k2hn _ Topband Reflector Archives - http://www.contesting.com/_topband
Topband: RFI - and lots of it
Thanks Steve. I agree but didn't expect this problem. Should have known this could be a problem since this is an older home that has been remodeled. Regardless of the outcome with the power company I've been studying Jims writings on grounding and bonding and finding things that don't look right such as no ground rod for the power panel and a few elements of bonding are missing. Looks like I'll have to straighten a few things up inside also.Regards,jim/k2hn Jim K9YC is absolutely right - I live in a similar situation to you and the problems have been markedly improved by getting the grounding and bonding to earth improved around the house - wish I had taken Jim's advice years ago. House earths are often very simple at best and whilst they may be good enough to save your life, they are often not good enough in terms of RF. Have a look at Jim's book (there are some great diagrams) and get an professional electrician in to beef up/improve the house earth/improve the equipment bonding. The likelihood is you win both ways - probably be safer and the RF noise will be lower. Vy 73 Steve, VK6VZ _ Topband Reflector Archives - http://www.contesting.com/_topband

Rain on the way so will know for sure what conditions are best. Hopefully not the same as Tim or Kriss since this is big Lake effect snow country although you'd think snow would melt at an arcing area. We are expecting 60mph winds tomorrow and rain. Regardless, power company is sending someone "to take a look". Noise is still down but not gone since the wet weather stopped.jim/k2hn _ Topband Reflector Archives - http://www.contesting.com/_topband
Re: Topband: RFI - lots of it
Thanks Tom. I think I have it narrowed down with a portable. The line going to our home is spliced to the main line along with another line going to a building across the highway. At that spot there is a ball of wires with some kind of what appears to be a metal fixture (clamp etc.). Just not familiar with hardware used. Noise drops at building across the highway around the meter etc. and down the main line in both directions. Noise just below the junction is loudest I could find. Thanks to all the good people on the forum I've accumulated a folder of RFI, grounding and bonding info that I'm sure contain the solution. One lesson learned is to check 160 before you start laying in radials etc. I didn't have an antenna that I could tune that low. At our old qth I left a nice radial system and moved here last fall and spent the summer working on another radial system. What's ironic is that the power company put in a new feed line to the house since they said the old one was corroding copper etc.. They did it for free as long as we would replace the meter and line to the main panel, which we did. The ironic part is they left me the old wire and I used it for one of the radials:). I think it weighed 20 pounds, all copper. Regards,jim/k2hn Wet weather noise is often corona related, but sometimes defective insulators, cracked, scored, or dirty. I had problems with 345kV line corona in Ohio when the weather was damp. Dry weather noise is often slack spans allowing the metal pin joints or ball and socket joints in insulators to arc from capacitive coupling. The metal on metal corrodes and makes a tiny layer of oxide that arcs from capacitive coupling and leakage. Hitting a pole with a hammer finds that, because it shakes the wires and wiggles the metal joints. There are so many different things that can cause noise, however, that any Internet diagnosis is mostly a wild guess. The best thing to do before doing anything is try to track it with a VHF AM radio, like a portable aircraft radio. I have commercial noise locating equipment, but the last time I lent it out it came back broken. :( 73 Tom _ Topband Reflector Archives - http://www.contesting.com/_topband
Topband: Re. RFI - lots of it
Noise has decreased today. We have had off and on showers up to about 24 hours ago and today clear and dry, barometer up. Evidently wetness increases the noise. I checked nearby poles etc. and nothing concentrated near the poles. Loudest I get is along and beneath a junction where lines from our home and lines coming from a building across the road meet. Somewhat of a birds nest of wire right there. I also found that the garage door opener (when not it use) also generates some noise but not strong enough to reach very far. Also, thanks Jim. I read your article and I have a fairly good grounding and bonding situation. The biggest difference is that I have a grounding bar (solid copper, thick strip not a grounding bar that is pounded into the ground) inside attached to the operating table that everything is attached to and bar is earth grounded. Pretty much all the same setup I've used for years although I didn't have the rfi problem. One problem I see that may come up is if the noise level is down at hf and the power company checks at vh or uhf, which ever they do I don't think they will pick it up (unless it rains). Thanks again to all for the help.Regards,Jim/k2hn _ Topband Reflector Archives - http://www.contesting.com/_topband

Topband: RFI - Lots of it
Greetings,Last Fall we moved into a new location. This Summer I spent a lot of time and effort putting up an Inverted L and radial system. Now after tuning, etc. completed I have what appears to be power line noise, source unknown at this time. I threw the main in our home and noise still remained. The closer I get to the power lines or the antenna system the louder it gets. As I jump in freq., the higher the band the less noise. I have a portable receiver that is capable of rx on the ham bands. As it sits right now 160 is just about out of the question. Rig is a ft1000mp mk5 field and the NB does do a good on the noise but also on the weak signals. This is the first location in 35 years that I've run into this. I don't have much faith at this point in the power company finding the source but will call them this week. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated and also wondering about Noise Phasing with MFJ-1025.
