Re: Topband: Satisfactory fiberglass pole for K9AY loop
Look around for the fiberglass stackable army surplus mast sections either at a local flea market or online. Think they come in 4-foot sections. That’s what I’ve been using to support my K9AY loop for years. Re: Topband: K1N On Line Log
It's good to know that I'm not crazy either. My 160 contact from Monday night hasn't showed up yet though all the others following have. I remember the contact distinctly as it was ridiculously easy to work them and they were S9+20. But like you I'll just work them again! Topband: Recent FT5ZM operation
For those who may not be aware of www.hamradionow.tv Part #2 of Episode #137 is a video of presumably the first of many presentations on the FT5ZM operation. This one by K4UEE was nicely done at the Charlotte, NC hamfest held earlier this month. Of interest to me besides all the great pictures was which topband antennas worked and which didn't and the effort Nodir (EY8MM) an others went to in order to try and maximize the FT5ZM signal on topband. I hope we hear further details on their low band exploits as I'm sure there are plenty of stories left to be told. Les, N1SV _ Topband Reflector Archives - http://www.contesting.com/_topband

Topband: Adding 160m to Butternut verticals
Has anyone tried adding a horizontal wire to the top of either the Butternut HF2V, HF6V, or HF9V in order to get it to resonate on 160m? Les, N1SV _ Topband Reflector
Re: Topband: Inverted L question
Snip: I am right now using an inverted L which is spaced about 4 feet away from my tower. The vertical leg is about 85 feet. I remember a number of years ago talking with Jeff Briggs (K1ZM) about ideas for my first inverted-L while we were both waiting for flights out of the Dayton Hamvention. Like you I wanted to use my tower as a support and Jeff suggested that the vertical wire be at least 15-feet away from the tower. In short I did what Jeff suggested and the antenna worked well. As an alternative you can also detune the tower. Snip: I only have 6 radials at the present time Now here is the question The horizontal leg is about 50 feet and goes to my back yard. Since the trees are not that high, it probably slopes down to 40 feet at the far end The horizontal wire faces west.. Would it help me to face that wire to the south for east west signals on transmit. I would not lose too much sleep on your horizontal wire and the specific direction thats its pointing. In theory there is a very small amount of gain in the opposite direction to that of the horizontal wire. If you model this there is only about a 1.5 DB F/B ratio, certainly nothing to write home about. Since the inverted-L is a shortened vertical it benefits from a good ground system so I would definitely add some more radials. 73, Les, N1SV ___ Stew Perry Topband Distance Challenge coming on December 29th.
Topband: Lowband conditions from New England (24-DEC)
I didn't have a lot of available time to operate last night but was pleasantly surprised to see how very good low band conditions were here in New England. Both ZS6EZ & ZS1JX were 599 here at their local SR (~0330z) on 80m CW. Signals from EU on topband were not as strong as the previous night (or maybe there was just not as many stations active at that time)? What really knocked me over though was V5/DL3DXX who was a real 579 here at his SR (0408z). I would not have expected conditions like this being as close to the top of the solar cycle as we are. But I guess that tells you something about this solar cycle doesn't it! Les, N1SV ___ Stew Perry Topband Distance Challenge coming on December 29th.
Topband: ZL9HR & East coast of NA on the low bands
Without taking up too much bandwidth. I would like to hear from other NA east coast stations offline that worked the recent ZL9HR folks on 80/160m to hear about their experiences. While I did not hear them at all on 160m I did work them on 80m. Without boring you about the details let me just say that they were copy able here for less than an hour total during their entire stay on the island. Topband: TB season
For those of us having to roll our radials up each year the topband season is either over or in my case almost over. The deal with my XYL is that because the radials are on the backyard, I can roll them them out each Ocxtober but have to roll them up once the snow is gone. This year we had less then 20 inches of snow around here needless to say I have been dragging my feet on t h i s subject. But with temps in the 70s today, I am certianly on borrowed time. So n ext weekend the radials are probably going to have to get rolled up. But before then I 'm hoping to put a few the more SA stations in the log (wink wink nudge nudge...).
