Thanks to all who answered my question on remote tuners. I have MORE than
enough info to go forward.

Everyone have a GREAT Thanksgiving.

Re: Topband: Dipole/remote tuner

Looking for input from the collective knowledge of the reflector.

You have a wire dipole for 75 meters fed with a 1:1/5K rated balun. You want to
transition to a remote tuner so you can move around 75/80 meters.

The question is: Do you leave the balun in place, or remove it and feed the
dipole directly from the remote tuner? We have mixed answers from the local
"Population". That's why I'm coming to the reflector.

Please, don't be critical and ask questions like: what gauge wire, bare of
covered wire, How high, yada yada yada,

That's all. Thanks in advance.

Topband: More re: Top loading hy-tower

2013-11-17 Thread jcjacobsen

How do again Bob,

I forgot to add IF you short the stub at the top then forget about using the
drop wire. Just put the coax feed direct to the bottom of the load coil, and
the top of the coil to the tower base "T". Short out the coil for 80m ops. At
least that is where I'd start experimenting.

2013-11-17 Thread jcjacobsen
Hi Bob,

If you are going so far as to removing all the stubs, go one farther. I' ve
heard that the "limited High Power" problem is because of arc over between the
top of the tower section and the 80m stub mast above it. I've heard several
stories about fireworks at the top of the tower during 160 contests. I'd try
shorting out/connecting the stub to the main tower with a strap. Get the tower
to resonate on 80/75. THEN your base load coil should work with no limitations
on 160. You could switch the coil in/out with a relay.
Good luck with the project. Let us all know how it turns out.

Re: Topband: 160 vert puzzle

2013-01-09 Thread jcjacobsen
How do to all.
Glenn is chasing a 160 meter antenna puzzle, where the SWR on a vertical
supported by a 4x4 increases when he touches the top of the 4x4.

First off, the disclaimer: I AM NOT AN ANTENNA GURU!

With that said, Glenn, does the same thing happen when you bring your
finger/hand CLOSE to the 4x4 with out touching it??? I think what is happening
is your hand is coupling capacitively to the antenna. Moving your hand up and
down is changing where it is coupled to the vertical and because of a different
level of "voltage and current", the SWR will change. I noticed that also on my
temp low band/winter vertical that is insulated from and supported by a tripod.
Touch the tripod and the SWR goes up. Come close to the tripod, same thing. I'd
say, don't worry about it. Just use it.

Re: Topband: feeding vertical

How do,

I posed a question about feeding a grounded vertical with a gamma match rod
INSIDE a tower.

Thanks for the direct replies and those that came to the list.

The resounding answer seems to be NO.. Won't work..

Topband: Feeding a vertical

How do to all,

I have a hypoth--er hipoth--oh, alright, a theory, question for all. Take a
grounded, 1/4 wave vertical (pick your band/freq of interest) made of tower
sections. You're going to feed it with a gamma match. Could the gamma match rod
go on the inside of the tower sections for protection?? And, yes, I know, you
could insulate the tower from ground and series feed it. BUT, after all this is
a hypother hipoththeory question.

Hey guys-n-gals

Please. When replying to a submission, don't hit reply at the top of your mail
screen. In case you haven't noticed, THAT causes the entire digest to be sent
out. THEN you (WE) have to read/skip through to the next submission. Pick out
the e-mail of the sender and do a CC to Top Band. It will save LOTS of band
width.

Ok, I'm off of my soapbox. Back to Top Banding-ing-ing-ing.

Darl: Sounds like a good case for tube type, boat anchors.. No menus,
no microprocessors, no solid state. After all, the military keeps going back to
it from what I've heard. Sand storms in the Middle East causing static buildup
and taking out the front ends of the latest and greatest microprocessor gear.
(Sorry, I couldn't resist!! )

Time for a Faraday cage around the radio room?

Good luck you just may need lots of it.

Re: Topband: Radial wire

2012-06-05 Thread jcjacobsen
Dan is looking for radial wire.

I've been lucky to find spools on sale at the local Big Box stores. Another
source, again if you watch for sales, is 14-2 awg w/ground NM Romex type cable.
Run an inexpensive Romex splitter over it and you have 750 feet of radials from
a 250 foot coil. It's a little work, but it's going in the ground...
PLUS 1/3 of the radials are bare copper. Good luck with the project.

Re: Topband: MA160V SWR/match

2011-08-09 Thread jcjacobsen
Paul N0AH, is having "fun" tuning his MA160V vertical antenna:

Now, do I just use the Pro's III tuner or the Amidon UnUn to
minimize SWR at the feedpoint-

Paul,
You could also try 10 or 12 turns of #12 or 14 gauge wire, 2" diam across the
feed point and ground.
Spread/compress the turns to get the lowest SWR/best match. It's fastest if you
have an antenna bridge/analyzer of some type. Your bandwidth will be rather
narrow but then you could touch it up with the tuner. This is what I do with a
H.B. 40 ft vert for 160/75/40. I go for the best macth on 160, and let the
other bands be. As long as the resonance is mid point of where I operate on all
three bands, everyone is happy: Rig/tuner/ME! I can usually wander
30 or 40 kc um, make that KHZ, each side of resonance without a lot of
problems. I'm no antenna Garu, so with that being said, YMMV.

73 and good luck with the project.
