Topband: 160 Worked All States

2015-02-09 Thread Steve Piotrowski via Topband
Hi All!
So back to this WAS discussion I could use MT and ND on CW and Nebraska on
SSB. can anybody help a fella out? I'm willing to get up early or stay up late.
I'm on eastern time.
there are more I need on 160 but i'm not being too picky to start (AK, LA, HI,
OR) in case anybody is interested.

He is in California.

The ARRL DX is a waste of time.

The ARRL 160 and the CQWW 160 would be much better.

For me it was just the opposite as the ARRL DX Contest was good for me.
One year, since I was considered "DX", I was able to work all 48 States in
3.5 hours on 160. But since KH6 and KL7 are also DX I wasn't able to get
them. Also since the ARRL 160 Meter DX Contest still bans the U.S.
Territories from being considered "DX" to try and work WAS during this
event is a waste of time. You have most mainland stations in a wall to
wall sea of QRM with automatic CQ machines and unable to hear you. With
the ARRL DX Contest, as opposed to their 160 Meter Contest, the ops are
only looking for "DX" and that makes a big difference for me to be able to
48 State WAS in less than 4 hours.

This has probably been mentioned? But CQ 160 CW Contest coming up in two
weeks is an excellent venue to finish those Topband WAS quests.

I run an Elecraft K3/KPA500 into an Inverted L with a K2AV-designed FCP

the
line of radials of receiving antennas, but. I have been able to easily
work
into the Canadian Maritime provinces (plus the remainder of the New

So - if you can get on some evening while we have relatively good

KL7RA has built a great contest station/is a great operator. If he is on,
it should be no problem to work him.
He does use LOTW - I have many confirmations from Rich.

Same think for HI. KH6LC has built a great station, and uses LOTW for
confirmations.

GL with the chase!

Several stations are active in WV on the contests, especially N8II and K8JQ but
there are others. My main on air activity is DX chasing. Emails are
frequently received from folks seeking a WV LoTW confirmation on the bands 160

Canadian Maritime provinces (plus the remainder of the New England states), so
I know I can hit those states. Problem is that I’ve never heard anyone from
there on Top Band!

So - if you can get on some evening while we have relatively good propagation,
I’d love to arrange a schedule. If we connect I can QSL via LoTW or direct with
my card and an SASE.

I still need 3 for 160m WAS QRP, OR, AK & HI... Every season I think
'maybe this year', and then things come up, and I don't get much time in
front of the rig.

Maybe this year ;)

I'm also trying to complete 160M WAS QRP, and need six states. Four of
them are on your list -- MS, SC, WV, and VT. The best propagation to
them is in the hour or so before their sunrise, and a half hour so so
after their sunrise. The station who's most active in VT, W1SJ, is
absolutely deaf -- he can be 10 over S9 and can't hear me. N8OO has a
big signal from LA, and is not too tough to work. N4OGW is active in
contests from MS; Tor is a good op and has a decent station, but he
goes to bed early. Catch him earlier in the evening. N8II and K8JQ are
active from WV, but not big signals.

I don't see NAQP as a great opportunity, but you might get N8OO. The
reason is that it ends at 10 PM PST, and those of us who go to 160 do
so in the last half hour to grab some more mults. Much better
opportunities during CQWW160 CW, the weekend of Jan 24, and later
during the SSB weekend, Feb 28. Both contests start at 2PM PST Friday.

You probably know that propagation on 160 ebbs and flows through the
evening, and some nights are far better than others. I've worked WAS
in a weekend several times with 100W from CA.

The only state I need for phone 6BWAS is Vermont on 160 phone.
Worked it many times on CW. I'll be on for
CQWW160 phone beaming Vermont, if I can find a
run frequency. The band doesn't usually open up to VT
from the left coast until at least 10PM VT time,

This Saturday, from 1800Z-0600Z is the NAQP CW. Check 160 from about
0300Z until 0600Z. Some of those states will be there, but it would be
nice if you would work everyone you hear. The exchange is name and
state/province.
