NH6V and I had another successful near-ocean ground plane portable operation on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Sadly as I mentioned before, I was working both nights until 0300Z, so didn't get home until 0330. Saturday night I was even more tired, so only stayed on for half an hour, but managed to work another 12 NA stations I hadn't worked Friday night. (would have liked to have come back on around our Sunrise, but I was just too dead!) But as I mentioned, nearly every NA station came back first call, so was pleased with that. Oh and regarding not calling CQ in this contest, I HAVE tried calling CQ NA in the past . . . but still get loads of EU stations calling, so didn't bother this time. (I don't want to come on in the middle of the night to just work EU stations!) Anyway, good to work many of you guys in the contest. 73 Roger G3YRO _ Searchable Archives: http://www.contesting.com/_topband - Topband Reflector

Your success is appealing. You are The Man! The Top Pond-Crosser I know! I took a header in the kitchen to celebrate my 79th birthday on Dec 27th, and broke two bones in my left wrist/sprained thumb and wrist/ shoulder. My big feet got tangled up in the kitchen throw rug and I went down onto the tile floor like a tree. So had to work the contest with a soft cast on my left wrist, but still managed 816 Q's - 40 countries - 73 European Q's. Did a lot more s&p'ing for Europeans and noticed how 160 is very fussy from central Ohio. Fri night saw a good short opening to S5 land and vicinity around 0300z. Any europeans I heard after that couldnt pull me thru the local racket, altho I did work a handful of G/GD/GM/F at your sunrise. Sat night was much easier pickings around 0300z , then it petered off until around your SR when I worked a bunch of you chaps. Ohio seems to get spotlight openings with maybe 1-2-3-4 Euros heard at any one time. Try back 30 mins later and we hear another handful. etc etc. With 0300z and your SR being prime time on a regular basis. Best DX in the contest was ZM6T. Well I came on for a total of 3 hours on Friday night . . . I thought conditions were fair . . . managed to work 64 NA stations, a total of 23 States, plus Virgin Islands and Mexico. So was quite pleased with that. Also managed to get through the absurd contest pileup and work Mongolia and Thailand. Came on Saturday for half an hour, but conditions were at least 10dB down on previous night. Plus I had already worked almost everyone I could hear - managed about 10 more NA stations. There were about 4 NA stations on throughout the Contest that were pretty strong who didn't seem to copy ANY of the dozens of EU stations calling them ! Oh and I did try calling CQ NA for about 15 mins . . . but I kept getting dozens of EU stations calling me, so stopped doing that ! Isn’t it amazing that unless someone does it just as you did (old tech, no internet, output power limited by LORAN, etc.) that their achievement doesn’t quite make the grade? After all, nobody’s seen the trouble I’ve seen, right? Spend a few quality moments reading On the Origin of Species. Then either get busy evolving or go extinct. If the latter is your choice, please do it quietly. The rest of us are working new ones on Top Band on whatever mode they are available. And none of us wants to be distracted by your death-whine. Working sub-audible signals form JA to Zone 2 comes to mind. Or exploring daylight paths that don’t support audible signals. Re: Topband: CQ WW 160 CW - SK.. ?
To be honest I don't think there is a code of ethics anymore at least not in award chasing in Ham radio. To give example I recently heard a very prominent operator and Dx'er on FT8. In three calls from western US this super station gave a middle eastern station a plus 6 and plus 8 dB S/N report that was at very best -12 DB at my location. Now in order to do that he would have had to beam right through me as propagation was to N/NE. His signal was very modest at my location lending me to think RHR. In case anyone hasn't noticed lying and cheating is epidemic here and throughout the world at every level. Nothing will change much because nobody has the balls to deal with it. So with that in most cases the awards have become a participation award. Good job Billy. I'm over it. In the end there isn't anybody who will care anyway. If that is you gig carry on. 73 Bob, W7RH -- W7RH DM35os "It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity." - Albert Einstein _ Searchable Archives: http://www.contesting.com/_topband - Topband Reflector

I have to differ somewhat with the comment that Topband Reflector should not be used to discuss suspect cheating on 160M. Where else can someone's concern that "that just doesn't sound/look/smell right" come to? Its possible that others observed the same thing on the band and maybe it actually wasn't cheating even though originally suspected. This IS the place where such conversations should occur. Going on and on about generic cheating or digital concerns, I agree is not helpful. Although when someone announces an incredible achievement on top band that could only be achieved using FT8, we need to be sure that it is not glossed over that it doesn't make it necessarily a great lifetime achievement vs the way others were doing it. Re: Topband: CQ WW 160 Observations
We had a decent opening on Saturday as reported by a few stations. Otherwise I would agree that it was not great. It was ok. I did work MX5 on Friday night as my only EU and just a few on Saturday. Condx even down to the Caribbean were odd. I did work LU8, CX and maybe the a couple of others in SA. I did not stay up or wake up JA or UA0, HL, pacific. Re: Topband: CQ WW 160 from VK Land.
Hello Ron, many thanks for informations. It is explaining a lot... :) We tried to catch VKs but no way this weekend. Short report from our OK5T event this week is here: http://160mband.blogspot.ch/2016/02/cq-160m-dx-cw-contest-2016-at-ok5t.html I am sending my big apologize if we accidentally QRMed someone during the contest. I really adhere to good manners and gentleman's operation. We always tried to stay at least 300Hz far from another station when looked for QRG for RUN but sometime it was hard job on so crowded band. I hope to hear and work you again in the contests as OK5T or as my own call OK1RP. 73 - Petr, OK1RP http://160mband.blogspot.com http://ok1rp.blogspot.com On Mon, Feb 1, 2016, at 11:50 AM, vk3io wrote: > Hi all Top Banders. > > This year's contest was almost a total wipe out as far as VK was > concerned, due to summer storms on the east coast and the usual topical > storms up north and a cyclone off the west coast made it impossible. > > I did hear a few good signals from North America during our Saturday > evening in amongst the constant S9+20dB static crashes and some great > signals from Europe at around our Sun rise time on our Sunday and Monday > mornings, as the static level subsided. > > I managed only 12 qso's, only to Europe. > > It seemed like there was going to be a good peak to Europe on our Monday > morning at our Sun Rise, but I had to depart early for work. Topband: CQ WW 160 from VK Land.
Hi all Top Banders. This year's contest was almost a total wipe out as far as VK was concerned, due to summer storms on the east coast and the usual topical storms up north and a cyclone off the west coast made it impossible. I did hear a few good signals from North America during our Saturday evening in amongst the constant S9+20dB static crashes and some great signals from Europe at around our Sun rise time on our Sunday and Monday mornings, as the static level subsided. I managed only 12 qso's, only to Europe. It seemed like there was going to be a good peak to Europe on our Monday morning at our Sun Rise, but I had to depart early for work. Some great signals, some S9 and if I had been on at the peak, maybe even stronger. Cheers, until next contest, CQ WW 160 Phone. _ Topband Reflector Archives - http://www.contesting.com/_topband
