"Tuning" and 'working well" are two very different things. Jim's antenna
at 50-60 ft is too low to be very effective on 160M. When I first moved
here, I had a 160 dipole at about 125 ft, and it was "low." My first tee
vertical, roughly 60 ft with about 40 radials, beat it 90% of the time,
and often by a lot.

Hi Jim,

60 ft is very low for a horizontal antenna on 160, but that could load
quite well as a top-loaded vertical. Simply tie both sides of the
ladderline together and load it against as many radials as you can put
down.

Topband: G5RV Conversion Keith

As it sits now I can tune on 160 but performance not as good as my Inv. L and
beverage which I had prior to moving to this new QTH.  My other option is to
put up another Inv. L. etc. and leave the G5 as is for other bands.  Just not
enough low band   antennas and to little time while trying to get settled into
a new QTH.  Just thought it would be interesting to see what that big wire
would do strapped for 160.Thanks,Jim/k2hn

If it's a "double size", won't it tune on 160 as-is? I have a standard
G5RV that works well on all bands 80 - 10.

There's one difference with mine: the ladder line comes all the way
into the shack, and it's matched there with a parallel tuner. It works
a lot better that way than it did with the coax attached.

I strap the feeders and tune against ground on 160. It's not as good as
I'd like, but it's easy for an old man

What mix ferrite does the AES balun use? The original W2DU choke balun
design uses 73 material ferrite, and that does not always work the best on
160 and 80 meters in that application.

I'm not knocking W2DU'S time-tested design; but it's over 40 years old, and
much better ferrites (#31 in particular) have come out since then.

Jim K9YC is absolutely correct about feeding the dipole on 160 as a
T-antenna against a good RF ground, unless you don't care about DX. But
what bands do you want to use it on? And on what band did you experience
the RF problem?

Thanks for all the replies about the G5RV RF into the shack problem. We
ordered a W2DU-HF choke balun from AES that is supposed to solve the problem
1.8-30 Mhz with a GOOD ground for the transceiver and power supply. Will
post here how it works out. Floyd says thank you he is 89 and NOT on
internet.
