"This morning - the band was in excellent shape from the Pacific
Northwest

to Europe. I knew things were going to be good when the first signal I
heard on the band was from RC3FL and he was 579 at 1337 UTC (a little
over
two hours before my sunrise). During the next two hours, I was able to
put

34 Europeans in my log - including many first time callsigns.

This is the best morning opening I have experienced this "cycle" of
sunspot

minimum.

Even though my QTH is about 50 miles from Boring, my reports can still be
boring?

This morning - I got on the radio around 7 AM local (1500Z) and quickly
worked Vlad, RA4LW, who I also worked last night. During the next hour - 8
more Europeans made it into the log. This is the first time I have heard
this morning opening to EU in perhaps 8 years.

It's an indication to me that we are moving into the best time to be on
topband - for perhaps the next 2 or 3 years.

My TX antenna was best for RX as I don't have too many beverages up yet
(just one going East). Many stations were worked using "QSB protocol" with
short transmissions.

Re: Topband: Not so Boring report

2012-12-10 Thread ZR
I used to work EU on 6-10M crossband in those days since very few had
authorization. Ireland was one that did and quite a few were on.

My rig was a HB 6AG7, 6V6, 829B crystal controlled with PP 6L6 modulators
into an ARRL HB 4 el yagi just above the 3el HB 10M which was above a HB 15M
at about 20' high. 6BQ7, 6J6 converter to a 20M IF was also HB.

On 10M it was a Viking I, HQ-129X. I lived out on LI, NY back then, in
Nassau County.

Fun days about 8 years before I met Stu Perry when I was at National and he
convinced me to try 160 after Id moved to 8 acres in NH.

Alas, will I never see the likes of 1957-58 ever again for working EU on
6M

using an end-fed window screen for an antenna? On the other hand, now
that I have a couple really good trees to support 160m TX antenna, maybe I
don't care. So conflicted...

A solar flux of 97 is not what I would call a solar maximum. More like a
bump in the new Mayan Minimum. Who knows what will happen on December 21
:)

. Don't forget that in previous sunspot maximum's, we would go 3 or more
years when the flux would never fall below 100 for even a day.

This is good news for topbands enthusiasts, unless the Mayan prophecy

Interesting to see this report. A few years ago, OH2BO wrote on this
reflector that for DX signals traveling through the polar regions, he watches
the solar wind, and expects very good conditions when the solar wind speed is
below 300 km/sec and the solar wind pressure is less than 0.5 nPa -- which is
exactly what happened in the latter part of last week. Solar wind data is
available here: http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/SWN/

 Hi all.

Until a few nights ago - I still hadn't worked any Europoeans this season.
That changed on Wednesday night when I got 4 Europeans in the log. I would
have had another one on Thursday night - but my TX antenna had developed a
water short in the control cable and was beaming south when I thought I was
TXing to the north. Missed RA4LW.

However, Vlad heard me on Friday morning when I figured out the problem and
called him using my E/W direction. This morning, I worked OH3XR about an
hour before sunrise. It's very unusual to work the morning opening during
a sunspot maximum - but we'll keep trying and see how it pans out over the
 next couple of weeks.

This is really interesting, as last evening was the first time this year
that I have heard Europe on 160 at my SS. G6PZ was really loud.

Tree,

We are at a sunspot maximum? 10M sure as heck didn't get the memo.

There was a whole bunch more DX on 160 last nite than on 10 today! And that's
fine by me!

AHAA! Another who enjoyed 1957-1958. I wasn't on 6 then(lived in a
channel 2 area), but it was wonderful having 10 meters open 24 hours/day.
