Re: Topband: Plasma TV noise

2016-11-18 Thread Rob Atkinson
You can buy a TV for the neighbor and if he cooperates that's fine.
But they don't always cooperate. Sports fans like plasmas because
they have no latency effects in fast live action. And sports live
action when the screen is constantly changing is when they blast out
the most noise.

The screen radiates because it is the nature of plasma. Every little
pixel is a gas bubble that is fired by around 10KV to ionize the gas
inside to emit light. It's a matrix of thousands of arcing
electrodes. The h.v. supplies are often unfiltered and their noise is
coupled to power lines. If the TV is wired to the phone and internet
to display in-coming call ID when the phone rings, out goes the noise
on the phone lines. Now you are surrounded.

You can buy the TV if they'll go along, but what's next--grow
lights...solar panels...variable speed furnace motors...

You can't control everything and if you can't move to a QTH where you
can establish a 500 foot buffer all around your antennas, you are left
with trying to control how this RF gets into your systems. So far,
I've had pretty good success with a pair of RF Pro-1B loop antennas
and the DX Engineering NCC-1 phasing box. It won't solve everything
but it knocks the noise level down to where it seems like it's the
year 1995. But for those of us with these problems, the days of
hearing QRP stations is probably coming to an end. Low band hamming
is going to eventually become a luxury for those with a lot of land.
I know hams who have already abandoned the low bands. The broadcast
industry trade associations are trying to get action but it is
probably too little too late. The FCC has not done enough to protect
and defend the spectrum in the U.S. that is HF and lower.

5 Years ago my Mr. gadget neighbor bought a new 70 inch Plasma TV , I
ask why a Plasma ? he told me the picture was so much better

On 160 the interference seems to only be between 1837 to 1842 , so I
guess I'll not be working any WSJT.

My Hi-Z RX4 SQ was 300ft from his house ! This past summer I installed
an 8 Circle @ 700ft away . This made a big difference, the interference
is attenuated, mostly hear it when beaming his way . Now I'm closer to
the neighbor west of me . Hope he doesn't buy a Plasma .

We can all thank our lucky stars that plasma TV has got to the point where
vanishing popularity has got new plasma set numbers down to where it no
longer has economy of scale. Economics are killing it.

What you can do at your neighbor's party is to pour some Pepsi inside his
plasma TV and hasten it's demise. Sledge hammers would work too, but it's
hard to be covert using a sledge hammer. The replacement will be LED-based,
which happily now has both quality and economics of scale tilting positive.

The new radio killer will be solar cells that have individual controllers
so a shadow on one part doesn't kill the whole panel. New battle, new
economics, new solutions.

Re: Topband: Plasma TV noise

2016-11-18 Thread Rob Atkinson
First question: Is it your plasma TV or the property of someone
outside your family?

If it is yours the solution is simple: Haul to target range and blow
holes in it and get a LED TV. Or if you are feeling calm, break it
open and get all the h.v. parts out: electrolytics, heat sinks etc.
then trash the rest and get LED TV.

If it is not yours, things get complicated. Won't get into that until
first question is answered.

Re: Topband: Plasma TV noise

2016-11-18 Thread Art Snapper
This is a difficult problem. The neighbors might object to an anechoic
chamber around their house.

I'd guess the best solution would be to get a HWF up as high as possible,
That isn't possible here at the moment.

Neighbors to the NE and to the SE of me use plasma TVs. Also an apartment
complex is less than a half-mile away. My noise peaks fall within
1825-1830, and in a few spots on 80 meters.

I have been attempting to phase out the noise. Receive antennas here are
a Hi Z receive 4 square, and BOGS about 20 degrees offset from the
directions favored by the 4 square.

The BOGS are connected to an adjustable preamplifier. The preamp allows me
to match the signal (or interference) levels between the 2 antenna systems
before being fed to a phasing unit.

The phasing units I have been using include the MFJ-1026 and the Quantum
Phaser. DX engineering also makes a product.

Sometimes (but not always) is possible to null enough of the plasma noise
to improve reception of the DX station. When that isn't working, it may be
possible to peak the DX station's signal to make the SNR better than the
plasma noise.

My guess is that when it isn't working, the azimuth of the desired signal
is very close to the interference. Also I am not sure which plane the
interference is being nulled in.

YMMV,

Likewise my pennant antennas do a great job knocking it down as long as the
plasma TV is located off the backside of the pennant.

Some folks have some success using a noise canceller like the MFJ-1026,
DXE-NCC-1 (there is now a DXE-NCC-2 available), etc.

Re: Topband: Plasma TV noise

2016-11-18 Thread Don Kirk
Hi Bill,

Appears to be a pretty unsolvable problem. I had succes with one by
installing a K9YC type choke on power line cord but this one case was
unusual as the TV generated RFI regardless if the TV was actually turned on
or not (this case is documented on YouTube).

Have not been able to put a dent in any other cases and one theory is that
the screen directly radiates RFI versus feeding back down the power cord to
the house wiring. The RFI from the screen may then get induced back into
the house wiring, but not necessarily a direct path from the TVs power cord
to the house wiring. I'm starting to think this theory is true.
