2014-07-10 Thread Jon Zaimes AA1K

My favorite memory of Bob -- among many -- is a mobile one too.

It was about 9 years ago on a Friday and I had just installed a new
screwdriver on my VW Jetta that covered 160-6 meters. Didn't have time
to try it that night, but my son Adam N3TTT and I were up early
Saturday, heading for the Timonium hamfest in Maryland. About an hour
before sunrise, Adam was driving across the Eastern Shore and I was in
the passenger seat, tuning Topband when I came across W8JI chatting with
Bob on CW. When they signed off, I called Bob and was totally amazed
when he came right back. We had a solid contact -- my first mobile
Topband DX and still the longest. Just to prove it wasn't a fluke, when
we crossed the Chesapeake Bay Bridge just before sunrise, I worked Bob
again and he gave me an even better report.

He had those great ears, and a nice quiet rural location, that could
pull out the weak ones. Best I can tell from skimming my old paper logs,
our first QSO was early in 1990, and our last this past October. In
between there were hundreds of others -- he was such a beacon by which
we could gauge the band. I heard him give many USA their first VK.

We often corresponded via email, about DX activity and his amps, and he
in recent years was quite active on the ON4KST lowband chat. In the "off
season" this summer, I haven't been too active on the chat but
fortunately on June 20 I took the time to log in about 08z as I was
getting ready for work. To my surprise, VK3ZL had logged in too -- first
time in months -- as Jeannie had gotten him a tablet to use in his
hospital room so he could stay in touch. We conversed a few minutes
before I had to leave, and I feel fortunate we had the chance one last
time. When I checked back for this conversation after his death was
reported, I found he had encountered a few others that day on the chat.
I'm including Bob's comments below; he only made a few short comments on
two subsequent days on the chat.

Bob was a Ham's Ham. He did it all with grace, art and prowess. He told me
early on
that he had put up a 42' "Minooka Special." I don't know if he stuck with
that design,
but he surely did well with a small antenna, whatever type it was. He
could really hear
well, too. He gave me over a hundred QSO's on 160 since May of '91. In
fact, one
March morning in 2004 he answered my CQ on 1824.5 from my mobile in the
driveway.
We had just moved and had no equipment unpacked & no antennas. Bob always
cheered you up in the morning and that was especially true that day. I bet
the boys
met him at the Pearly Gates and took him right to the big 160 set-up...
with a fully
equipped workshop next door.
So long, old friend,

2014-07-09 Thread Bob Garrett
Greetings,

When I heard from my dear friend Sid K3SX about Bob's passing, I looked back
at my log to determine when I first worked VK3ZL. The date was September 1,
1999. Over the next 14 years, Bob and I worked each other many many times.
Like others have said, he was a fixture on Topband along with Mike VK6HD,
SK. I was not aware that Bob was only using a short vertical. Man, what a
consistent signal.

He will be certainly missed. Bob, you are 599 and solid copy in our hearts.
RIP my friend.

I am very sad to hear this news. There are some things you count on in
life. The sun rises every morning and then sets in the evening; and back
when I was really active on topband and up every morning at some
insanely early hour, it was just a given that Bobby was lurking there
somewhere in the noise.

I just looked in my log and my first QSO with Bobby was on July 15,
2003. I had only been in this house for less than a year and I think my
topband antenna was still an 80 meter inverted-V hung on a 40 foot Rohn
push-up mast lashed to the side of the house with the coax shield and
center conductor tied together and fed against a ground rod. On many an
early morning in those days, I would listen to Tom W8JI keeping his
daily sked with Bobby. Those were some really good times for me, so I am
truly sad to know that Bobby will no longer part of my early morning
topband landscape, except in fond memory.

Rest in peace, dear Bobby.

Bob was truly a remarkable person. Not only did his homebrew skills far
surpass the vast majority of us but he also put out a remarkable signal with
a modest station. A lot of topbanders may be unaware that Bob's signal came
from a homebrew 42' vertical (yes, forty two foot) . Capped off with a
hefty top hat and a very good ground radial system, he was able to work the
world daily. He and I had other shared interests and enjoyed exchanging
emails. I will surely miss his friendship and his signal on 1824.5 on those
cold, winter morns.

I received an email from Jeannie this afternoon. Bob succumbed to the
effects of bladder cancer today. Bob was many things. He was one heck of a
builder. His amplifiers won the SERG homebrew competition so many times
that they finally gave him a lifetime achievement award. He was a fixture
on TopBand and gave many their first VK QSO. He was also a beacon until
recently. If there was any propagation at all Bob was there to work it.

Over the years Bob and I and I am sure some others developed a
relationship that transcended ham radio. I found that Bob was a fire
communications officer who provided essential communications and control for
the intense fires that happen in that part of Australia amongst other
interests.

Above all Bob was our friend.
Bob told Jeannie his wife he wanted the following on his grave marker:

Robert William Briggs..

..loving husband of Jeannie..

..17 Oct 1942 ---7 July 2014..

...vk3zl s k..

and that is what she will do.
Jeannie can receive your emails at both her email address: Jean Briggs

and also she is keeping Bob's account open: vk...@bigpond.com

Bob's XYL, Jeannie, will continue to maintain Bob's email address for a
period of time. I believe she has the ability to view these messages as
they arrive. Whether or not she presently has the time to do it is another
matter. Hopefully, at some point, she will have the opportunity to look at
them.

Bob was an amazing bloke – totally committed to what he loved. He also had a
great sense of humour and of proportion about life in general and what was
really important – and was always good for a chat.

When it came to home construction, Bob was an artist and his power amplifiers
were masterpieces (he built me one for 6m).

Sincere condolences to Jeannie. Ooroo Bob, rest in piece.

Very sad to hear of Bob's passing.
Apart from being a great bloke and 160m operator, he was a master linear
amp constructor and frequently sent me pictures of his latest projects,
a true craftsman.

I am lucky to have one of his custom built 160m GS-35B units.
That little 42 foot vertical of his sure performed on 160m. Sure miss
that outstanding signal on 1824.5kHz.

Truly a sad day. Remarkable individual, fellow ham and friend whose heart
and soul was always shining brightly on topband. Like many, I will miss the
early morning Q's on topband. Hopefully Bob is in a better place and at
peace now.

73 and God Bless Bob, you will not be forgotten
