Topband: Wednesday activity night

2020-12-09 Thread Mark Lunday
Not bad at all considering we are under a geomagnetic storm warning. Tried 100
watts to my inverted L, but not enough juice so I put the 400W amp online.

Worked

  *   G3YRO - Roger (first time QSO)
  *   OM2XW - Jan
  * OZ7YY - Finn (first time in 9 years since we worked)
  * RX3APM - heavy QSB, thanks for patience Sergey

Topband: Wednesday Activity Night

2019-11-06 Thread Roger Kennedy
Well a couple of weeks ago it was great . . . lots of North American
stations on the band for a few nights in a row . . . managed about 50 NA
QSOs on cw over a couple of evenings.

But I think that activity was just due to those stations coming on the band
to try and work the various DX-peditions that were on 160 that week.

Since then, you're lucky to have more than a handful of NA cw QSOs any
evening.

SO . . . I'm suggesting again what I suggested last Season . . . a CW
Activity Night every Wednesday on 160m . . . to try and focus some activity
on the band. (rather than just all the FT8 stations !)

I myself will be on tonight from around 23.30 Z

Hi Roger

All my 160M antennas have been taken down for mowing season.

I plan to put up a NE/SW RBOG for the KH1 DXpedition.Instead of ground
radials for the INV-L I plan on experimenting with a pair of elevated "gull
winged" radials. If those work well I plan on using them for the next TB
Season.

So hopefully I'll see some of you for some Wednesday night fun in late June.

Yes conditions were pretty good on Wednesday Dave . . . yet I only
heard/worked 6 North American stations!

So it's a shame there wasn't more activity. (it was great a few weeks ago,
when we were getting 40 - 50 stations on the band)

I know it's getting towards the end of the "season" . . . but hopefully it's
worth having a few more of the Wednesday Activity Nights . . . so come on
guys!

I thought that conditions on Wednesday evening were pretty darn good at
times, but some strange things were going on. Roger G3YRO, was good
copy running between S7 and S9, which is a great signal. I think the K3
was showing S3 with background noise. I noted that the RBN was
providing some pretty loud spots from Europe around 0100 UT and much
weaker spots after 0200 UT, and then nothing later on. I also worked
G3JMJ with loud signals. I really enjoyed the fact that any T-storm
noise was not too loud. I can deal with 10-20 dB but 40 to 50 dB crashes
cause me to spill my drink every time. I have been trying to evaluate
my enlarged Europe beverage. It was put together at the end of the DX
season for most folks and activity is way down. I am thinking that it
is working great. I am combining two rather long wires that are spaced
380 feet apart. The separate feed lines are combined in an NCC-1 phasing
box. Either antenna when added to the other causes a slight increase in
noise. The addition is the same for either wire. I can null most signals
and then add 180 degrees and the signals get really loud. Over the last
few weeks I must say that signals from Europe have been better than
normal for me. That is a good sign. It is so hard to evaluate antennas
without a reference.

Roger G3YRO – conditions haven’t been all bad on 160 lately. ZL3IX and I have
had 7 good long path QSOs in this month so far.
