 It's tempting to start whitelisting things that are required for various
 pieces of functionality, which does work.  However:

  * That at a minimum exposes information regarding Browser version.
  * Is probably somewhat fragile and would require people keeping track of
 what internal URLs Firefox uses for various pieces of functionality.
  * Realistically Mozilla should fix `resource` and `chrome` URIs
 correctly, though given how long the bug has languished on bugzilla, my
 bet is that it will remain ignored and unloved till Sol evolves into a Red
 Giant, rendering the issue moot by extinguishing all human life.

 Branch that does just that available on request, though it probably should
 be security slider linked because it is a functionality/privacy tradeoff,
 and I'm completely out of fucks to give at this point.

 I believe we can accomplish this goal by doing a

 smartlist_shuffle(bridge_list);
 }}}
 right after where we call {{{sweep_bridge_list()}}} in config.c.

 The clean way to do it is probably to make a new function
 {{{shuffle_bridge_list()}}} that we call from that same place in config.c,
 with a comment about why we're doing it, and then that new function lives
 in entrynodes.c right under the {{{sweep_bridge_list()}}} function.

 I am tagging as keyword easy because it now just remains to write the code
 that way and write up a changelog entry. :)

 Right now when the Tor client is configured to use bridges, it adds each
 bridge to its state file, and then it selects which bridge to use just
 like it selects a guard. That means when we changed to the 1-guard design,
 Tor clients by default use whichever bridge is listed first in their
 bridge list.

 When we started shipping a hard-coded list of bridges with Tor Browser,
 that meant that every Tor Browser client who used default bridges would
 use the first bridge in the list, they would all fall back to the second
 if the first went down, etc. This is poor for load balancing and probably
 poor for other properties as well.

 The Tor Browser team hacked around this issue in #18113, by shuffling the
 bridge lines for each user, and recording the shuffle outcome somewhere in
 the prefs so each user can have a persistent ordering.

 But Tor itself does almost all of what we want: if Tor itself shuffled the
 list of bridges each time it reads its config, then the very first time,
 whatever order is picked will get written into the state file that way,
 and then for future times, the shuffle outcome won't matter because we'll
 go with whatever order we find them in the state file.

 This fix, on the Tor side, will also help in non Tor Browser cases, e.g.
 when the user pulls down a list of 3 bridges from bridgedb and adds them
 to her torrc file.

 prop224 wants us to sign messages prefixed with a constant string. For
 example:

 {{{
SIG is a signature, using AUTH_KEY, of all contents of the cell, up
to but not including SIG. These contents are prefixed with the string
"Tor establish-intro cell v1".
 }}}

 dgoulet also has plans for adding a prefix to the signature of the HS
 descriptor.

 So, it would be ideal if we had some crypto util functions that will do
 that for us. We are talking about two functions called
 `ed25519_sign_prefixed()` and `ed25519_checksig_prefixed()` that are
 basically wrappers over `ed25519_sign()` and `ed25519_checksig()` that
 also accept a `const char *prefix_str`.

 If we have these functions in upstream tor, it will be easier for us to
 write code for the various prop224 subsystems that need to be implemented.

 Nick told me that the crypto operation counters in `rephist.c` are
 considered unused and obsolete.

 I'm talking about the counters at `note_crypto_pk_op()` etc.

 Removing code is always good, so if these things are unused we might as
 well remove them.

 Hmmm h hmmm hmmm h.  In other words, I'm unclear what's best
 here.  I would like us to, at some point, re-evaluate how we're
 implementing configuration, logging, and possibly other things closely
 related to operation.  For example, a while ago it took me a moment to
 accept that CollecTor writes the default collector.properties if that file
 didn't exist; that was a bit too much magic for me, though I see the
 benefit.  I'm also not entirely happy with the way we're logging to
 LOGBASE_IS_UNDEFINED/ if the operator doesn't specify a directory, though
 I don't have a better idea how to do this right now.  And now I'm slightly
 concerned about the configuration file to be re-read without the operator
 explicitly asking CollecTor to do that (see my earlier comments before
 weasel chimed in).

 But I agree that we'll have to rethink these things anyway when we talk
 about providing (Debian) packages.  And I agree that having a way to
 reconfigure CollecTor while it's running is useful.  So, I suggest that
 I'll review the changes you posted and then merge them later today or
 early tomorrow.  And we create a ticket for a later milestone where we
 reconsider these design decisions about configuration, logging, etc.
 How's that?

 I started to have more physical problems even though. I had ignored myself
 practically completely as far as exercise, and had both begun ingesting at
 a near by fast food spot because of the ease and inexpensiveness. It took
 all of us several months right after his final surgery within the artery
 in the leg, plus another one day admission to the hospital, in order to
 wean ourselves off the take out. We then began walking more regularly
 within the park route again.

 There is no need to - and really cannot : do anything Hernia surgery to

 I would like to separate concerns:

 First of all we provide a product that should work, be easy to deploy, and
 maintainable.
 The deployment part is already pretty easy now: one executable jar and one
 config file.
 Similarly maintenance, which includes troubleshooting of remote instances.
 For helping
 an external operator we simply need: their collector.properties, the
 revision number of the jar, and some log files.

 How operation is actually managed is not our concern.  We should strive to
 make
 many things possible. With the setup we chose so far that's the case.

 Actually all the three nice-to-haves you mention are already possible:

 That's clearly met.

 That is an operational question, which doesn't affect the product design.
 By adding collector.properties to a git repo you have what you require.
 Ensuring that the changes
 are committed is part of the operation.

 Of course, there are more operational issues: who may alter the
 configuration and the like.
 These are not part of the application/product.

 Saying that some issues are part of operation doesn't mean they're
 unimportant.
 I think they will be important at a later stage when we want to provide a
 Debian
 package of CollecTor, for example.  Then we need to think about how the
 re-configuration
 mechanism has to be wrapped, where to put the configuration, etc.

 The way it is now, leaves lots of room to accommodate many operational
 styles, I think.

 So, I really would like to include the re-config into the first release.
 And, then we improve things.  For a first release it's fine.

 We should probably first come to a conclusion how the configuration reload
 is triggered.  I tried to come up with a few examples how other services
 handle configuration changes:

  - Apache lets you edit config files and won't bother looking at them
 until you `service apache2 reload`.  I find that pretty easy to work with.
  - Tomcat checks every few seconds if there are new or updated webapps in
 its webapps folder and auto-deploys them.  I'm not a big fan of that
 approach because of the random (though short) delay, but I got used to it.
  - `visudo` lets you edit the sudoers file and makes changes effective
 immediately upon saving.  I'm okay with that, but I don't like how this is
 bound to a specific editor (which you can change, but which still seems
 cumbersome).
  - `crontab -e` lets you update the crontab and makes changes effective
 immediately.  I'm always very careful and afraid of making mistakes when
 making changes, which I wouldn't be if there was a separate reload step
 and I'd have the chance to review the configuration before reloading.

 So, generalizing from these examples:
  - I prefer using the editor of my choice, without having to look up how
 to define that editor somewhere, but just by opening the config file,
 editing, and saving.
  - I prefer that changes become effective immediately when I trigger the
 update, not at a random time after the change.
  - I prefer being able to review configuration changes, for example by
 copying the original file before editing and comparing the copy to the

 However, those are only my preferences.  I'd like us to find a solution
 that's least surprising to current and future operators.  I wonder if we
 should prepare an operator's manual with different options (not only for
 making configuration changes but also for configuring logging and other
 things unrelated to this ticket) and give that to potential operators to
 hear what they'd find most usable and least surprising.  Hmm.

 With a minor difference b/c the test won't be changed too much, I'd like
 to keep it.

 As you suggest: run the test before merging and
 add the ignore annotation to the test method: ` @Ignore("This test takes
 , which is too long.")` with the time you measured.

 Then I'll create the ticket about improving the test timing.

 make period greater than offset) and some non-trivial rebasing and finally

 As I said on IRC you don't want to have just one key baked in. Think about
 losing the key/having it compromised. How are you updating your users? You
 can't sign the MAR files with the new key you are about to bake in. Even
 if that would still work (because you just want to rotate to a new key)
 every user would need to update to that particular version. Let's assume
 you need to get a chemspill release out the week afterwards if you used
 your new key to sign the MAR files a considerable amount of users will
 have a broken update experience as they won't have updated to the version
 with the new signing keys baked in yet.
