Comment:

XUL doesn't work well on mobile, so I implemented the mobile preferences
 in XHTML.

Initially, I tried to make the code reusable across the mobile and
desktop, however I was losing lot of time trying to make the Desktop
version work. So this patchset has just the **mobile** implementation.

You can see the patches here:

See branch `nss_rsa`; it's based on the `nss_dh_squashed_merged` branch of
#26817 . PR at https://github.com/torproject/tor/pull/259 , but most of it
 also in the earlier branch.

 Replying to [comment:4 atagar]:
 > Note that this will *not* be exercised with the present tor git codebase
because it reports its version as '0.3.5.0-alpha-dev' rather than
0.3.5.1-alpha or above (as documented in the spec).

The spec guarantees that all Tor versions 0.3.5.1-alpha and later will
implement this feature. We can't guarantee that all Tor versions 0.3.5.0
-alpha-dev implement this feature, because it was merged partway through
 0.3.5.0-alpha-dev.

Erin and Shari want a more scalable way to receive job applications, since
right now they all come in via hr@tpo and they find that hard to sort.

I'm going to do these three so they can proceed with posting the job posts
that are pending, and then I'm going to try to encourage them to think
about using e.g. jobs+bookkeeper@tpo or something similar in the future so
we don't have to keep making and unmaking short-term role accounts each
 time.

Comment (by teor):

Please don't open a new pull request for every branch. New pull requests
don't have the comments from old pull requests.

Instead, add new commits to the existing branch, then push that branch.
Then the pull request will update with the new commits.

Comment (by sysrqb):

The only remaining code that can bypass the proxy is in Adjust. We don't
include Adjust at build-time, so this is not a problem.

For those wondering "What is Adjust?":
 {{{
Fennec (Firefox for Android) tracks certain types of installs using a
 third party install tracking
framework called Adjust. The intention is to determine the origin of
 Fennec installs by answering
the question, "Did this user on this device install Fennec in response to
 a specific advertising
 campaign performed by Mozilla?"
 }}}
 `mobile/android/docs/adjust.rst`

All other usage of `ch.boye.httpclientandroidlib.impl.client.*` is via
 `BaseResource` which is proxy-safe.

and it's probably good that way) or we'll need to do the change at the

Yeah, it's Apache settings these things, so if we decide it's a good
thing, a patch looks more like an `.htaccess` file.

Only used for parsing a string. This class is only a utility, it doesn't
 create any connections.

This is proxy-safe but only because we hard-code the default HTTP proxy.
`scheme.PlainSocketFactory` and `ssl.SSLSocketFactory` are used for
establishing a connection to the proxy, instead of the destination.
`params.ConnRoutePNames` is used for specifying the default proxy.
 `scheme.Scheme`, `scheme.SchemeRegistry`, and `ClientConnectionManager`
are used during instantiation of the connection manager
 (`ThreadSafeClientConnManager`).

Comment (by mcs):

Marvel will work fine for the handoff. Kathy and I are getting better at
 using it :)

Regarding the illustrations, you may already know this, but the following
folder contains the onboarding images that Firefox 60 uses:
 https://dxr.mozilla.org/mozilla-
 esr60/source/browser/extensions/onboarding/content/img

The SVGs whose filenames begin with `icons_` contain the small icons that
are shown to the left of navigation titles (left column of the onboarding
overlay), and the filenames that begin with `figure_` contain the larger
illustrations that are displayed on the right side of each topic panel.

We don't have to include the small icons but we can.

I am not sure much flexibility we have with respect to image dimensions,
so please try to stay close to the sizes that Firefox uses. Looking at the
CSS rules, it looks like the icons are scaled to about 20 pixels high and
the large illustrations are scaled to 352 pixels wide. Mozilla uses SVGs
for everything, but we need to use to PNGs for now because of #25695.
Kathy and I can produce the PNGs which we need if you give us SVGs.

moved suggested text (wiki_TorRelayGuide_OpenBSD.txt) from #27001 to this
 ticket;
setup should work out-of-the-box for any recent/updated OpenBSD system
 now;
prior to #27001 the documented steps lead to errors and a non-working
 relay setup.

On its highest setting, the security slider blocks SVGs on about:tor. But
we would like to use them there. See ticket:25695#comment:31.

We will need to decide if this is safe. An argument can be made that
allowing SVGs on built-in pages is not much different than allowing their
 use in the browser chrome.

Comment:

Thanks rl1987! Stem now uses 'GETINFO md/all' when it's available rather
 than reading descriptors from disk...

 https://gitweb.torproject.org/stem.git/commit/?id=ac2b277

We already had a simple integ test for this...

https://gitweb.torproject.org/stem.git/tree/test/integ/control/controller.py#n1149

This only is invoked when running tests that require network connectivity
(via 'run_tests.py --integ --target ONLINE'). Note that this will *not* be
exercised with the present tor git codebase because it reports its version
as '0.3.5.0-alpha-dev' rather than 0.3.5.1-alpha or above (as documented
 in the spec).

Made a little hack to exercise this new code with the integ test.

 Sounds good to me.

 > Is there someone we can ask about the underlying mingw-w64 bug? I am
concerned about spending too much time on this ticket at the expense of
other tasks (which is not to say that working updates are not important).

Yes, we should try to get some help. There are three venues I currently
can think of. We can mail Jacek and ask, ask on the mingw-w64 mailing
list, and ask folks on #mingw-w64 in OFTC's network. I'll start with
asking Jacek and might ask around in #mingw-w64.

Since I was getting this too I tried the tip above to delete the state
file and it worked, but after some restarts it seems to have been present
again. gk: Here's my state file, can you use it instead to reproduce this
 bug?

You can grab the copy by clicking at the left side bottom button called
'handoff'. That option will allow you to explore the design file.

We are still working on illos, could you have a placeholder for now? They
are going to be ready, I hope, for this week.

 Yes. Thanks!

I'm using Marvel for handing off just because is the tool we are using.
If there is a better way to do it for you, please let me know.

Comment:

I can reproduce the problem with my own ESR60-based build. I started with
the 8.0a9 tag, changed app.update.url to point to a test server that I
control, and replaced the udater's MAR signing certificates with one that
Kathy and I generated. So — minimal changes.

Kathy and I think we should merge the workaround that we developed (see
comment:7) until a proper fix inside mingw-w64 is available. If we agree
on that approach, I will test the workaround in an ESR60-based build and
make it available in a git repo.

Is there someone we can ask about the underlying mingw-w64 bug? I am
concerned about spending too much time on this ticket at the expense of
other tasks (which is not to say that working updates are not important).

Comment (by nickm):

If this is just about log messages, it's easier to do.

If it's about _everything_ sent over stdout or stderr, that is less easy.

A callback is not what I'd favor here, since libtorrunner.a couldn't
support it easily, and since introducing a system of callbacks would
complicated the control flow between tor and its embedding applications.
But maybe we can make capturing this stuff easier. The early-log-messages
ideas in #10059 might help here, as might some mechanism to have the
owningcontrollerfd feature start out with a preconfigured set of events.

So, what I would imagine here is a function that just takes two strings (a
configuration key and value), accumulates those, and puts them on the
 command line.

But given that, I'm not sure what would be gained by having this
additional complexity? Most applications already have a way to accumulate
a list of strings, after all.

On July 31 we deployed an updated `stats.html` where we declared all pre-
aggregated CSV files as deprecated. We said we'd remove those from the
public interface after September 15. This should be just a trivial patch,
so this ticket is mostly here to remind us to do this on or shortly after
 September 15.

Let's prepare one or more patches, get them reviewed, and deploy them on

 on my branch task/26963]].

In the implementation of more accurate DNS resolution, the DirContext used
by JNDI lookups was shared in a utility class. It turns out that
InitialDirContext, the implementation we used, is very not thread-safe and
so as a result lookups would often fail to complete.

This commit creates a new DirContext for every lookup. The overhead in
doing so is minimal and ensures that we do not have thread safety issues.

This commit also increases RDNS_LOOKUP_WORKERS_NUM to 30 (from 5). The
majority of time in these threads is spent waiting for replies and so
there are gains to be had in increasing the number of requests in flight.

Comment:

I just looked again and the key that's up there is still from 2015 (and
 still expired).

I don't know what this key is for, but if it matters for something, this
looks like it's still a bug.

built in tor, as opposed to a single library, is that you need to apply
different compiler flags to different portions of the code base, or is
 there another reason?

It's some of what you said here (different compiler flags); somewhat an
attempt at enforcing modularity; and somewhat because some of our tools
and testing programs only need smaller portions of the Tor codebase.

MinGW is not used anymore for Windows, or is MinGW now able to cope with
 the format of MSVC?

I believe that mingw can link against .lib libraries; I don't know whether
this is a full-compability thing, or whether the compatibility is partial.

 Per

https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/wiki/org/teams/NetworkTeam/SupportedPlatforms
, msvc is still officially "Unsupported": We'll take clean patches to make
it work, but we don't test with it or try hard to keep it working
 ourselves.

 Replying to [comment:9 gk]:
 > I tested with a clean, new 8.0a9 on a 64bit Linux system and could not
reproduce the bug with either obfs4 or snowflake chosen during first
start. I wonder whether an update from 8.0a8 is needed to reproduce it
(maybe an 8.0a8 even with one of those PTs configured while doing the
 update?).
I don't think that's the case as I've been able to reproduce it with a
 clean new 8.0a9 on a 64bit Ubuntu.

Interesting bit as well: Deleting the tor state file is sufficient to get
rid of it permanently (here's hopping it won't show up in the future).

New description:

I'm running in the same compile error on all tor-0.3.4.* versions

Comment:

Hi, thanks for this bug report.

Do any standard Solaris headers define a macro "SEC"?

What happens if you search and replace "SEC" with "BW_SEC" in
 test_bwmgt.c?

Okay, sorry for the really long delay. We go for now with the much simpler
patch mentioned in comment:7. This got fixed with #26951.

I opened #26995 for the suggested `execdesktop` enhancements.

In #18022 there were some shortcomings mentioned regarding the current
`execdesktop` script we ship for Linux. We could fix those and ship a
 better script.

There are two proposals for enhancements:

 1)
 https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/attachment/ticket/18022/execdesktop
 2)
 https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/attachment/ticket/18022/execdesktop.2

We need a proper patch for both.

Comment:

Hi, thanks for this bug report.

Just to clarify, permissions 0600 means rw---, or "list files, add
files, but not access files via the directory".

So you're right, tor should probably check for access permissions and log
 a warning.

I added HiddenServiceDir and HiddenServicePort to torrc.

When the empty HS directory has permissions 0600, tor starts without
creating the HS and without complaining. It should either fail to start,
or print a warning that the HS directory isn't writable.

When permissions is 300 though, tor complains that 'Directory x cannot be
 read'.

Comment:

FWIW: There should be rootles containers available for a while now in runc
 (https://github.com/opencontainers/runc/pull/774). We could investigate
that feature and check whether it is usable for us (I actually hope so as
requiring root for building Tor Browser at some point is surely a hassle
 for some builders).
