 Yesterday we decided to release metrics-lib 2.5.0 with Apache Commons
 Codec as dependency, so that people can build master with the dependencies
 from the latest release.

 I'm going to post a branch and tarball soon.

 Wow that is a pretty epic bug that went totally unnoticed in 034...

 This is related to our mainloop refactoring where we created "Roles" and
 only enable callbacks if you are configured for that "Role". For example,
 if you are configured to be a hidden service, we'll enable the
 `hs_service` callback or if you are a relay we enable `rotate_onion_key`.
 See `periodic_events` in mainloop.c

 Now, here lies the issue. With this configuration that is nothing except
 `ControlPort`, tor has basically no roles (see `get_my_roles()`). So, the
 `rescan_periodic_events()` doesn't enable anything because it thinks your
 tor just is pointless there.

 But that isn't true since `ControlPort` is defined thus some external
 party can interact with tor and thus it should be working properly.

 I believe the issue lies with the "client" detection role where we use the
 following but that function ignores the control port entirely (and extra
 points, this is my fault: 67a41b63063370c2 - #26062).

 Apart from the mainloop issue, I don't think not having the control port
 considered in that function is the problem. Instead, what we should do is
 enable our periodic events for the "ALL" role if the control port is
 opened as in "tor will do the basics".

 Personally, I think the current behaviour is almost correct, after all
 just having a control port does not mean that someone will issue a command
 that will require a connection to the Tor network. The main issue is that
 commands sent over the control port do not affect the  roles and trigger
 bootstrap when needed.

 That said, I do not mind if you prefer to make the control port config
 trigger the client role since it would work for Debian's situation.

 I'd actually like to deprecate the TOR_SEARCH_LIBRARY nonsense if
 possible, and not add its use for zlib.  (I don't understand why this
 patch starts using TOR_SEARCH_LIBRARY for zlib, but I assume it's
 necessary? Can we use pkg-config instead?)

 When I try to use this patch with `--enable-static-tor`, it fails during
 configuration with

 checking whether free(NULL) works... no
 configure: error: Your libc implementation doesn't allow free(NULL), as
 required by C99.
 }}}

 Am I doing something wrong?

 mitmflare does detect tor browser, this is not new (it has nothing to do
 with the mentioned alt-svc-based onion redirections), it exists since at
 least tor browser 7.x

 and it's not a trivial detection (like just the value of request headers),
 their fingerprint includes much more, it likely goes to the tls level,
 possibly to the tcp level

 if anyone knows details, I want to read them, thanks

 Nope, that is possible. I ran into that, too. Do you have glibc-static
 installed? `-lc` is probably resulting in an error due to the lack of a
 static library. I should've added a more helpful error message for this
 case. I can do that.

 I don't run PulseAudio, but sometimes I want sound in Tor Browser. To do
 this, I run Tor Browser under apulse (https://github.com/i-rinat/apulse),
 which adds `/usr/lib64/apulse/` to `LD_LIBRARY_PATH` to make applications
 pick up its PulseAudio-to-ALSA shim libraries.

 I think this used to work fine, but I haven't used it for a long time; the
 last time was definitely before the major upgrade to Tor Browser 8. Today,
 I wanted to use it again in 8.0.1, but I got no sound.

 Checking `/proc/$PID/environ` showed that apulse's path had been
 overridden; it now contained `LD_LIBRARY_PATH=./TorBrowser/Tor/` instead.

 This is because the `~/.local/share/torbrowser/tbb/x86_64/tor-browser_en-
 US/Browser/firefox` script overrides `LD_LIBRARY_PATH` unconditionally:

 basedir=$(dirname "$0")

 LD_LIBRARY_PATH="$basedir/TorBrowser/Tor/"
 }}}
 I changed that to add to the path instead of overriding it:

 LD_LIBRARY_PATH="$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:$basedir/TorBrowser/Tor/"
 }}}
 and now I get sound from Tor Browser.

 It seems that 0.3.4 has fixed this bug unexpectedly. Once I upgraded to
 0.3.4.7-rc a few weeks ago the warnings were gone. I was so accustomed to
 them that I really did not notice their missing at first.

 Additionally, if you take a look at the
 [https://docs.armbian.com/Release_Changelog/] of 5.6.0 you can see a
 "fixed clock drift on Bananapi boards". I guess, in my case, it has
 nothing to do with it, because I have never seen a clock drift. But maybe
 it is useful in the future.

 In order to make it more clear that an alpha tor browser release is an
 alpha, we should use `New Alpha Release:` instead of `New Release:` in the
 blog title.

 To do that we should also update the blog post URL in the update xml
 files.

 Synce version 57, Firefox uses new standard to provide content of webpages
 to screenreaders, programs which blind users use to work with computer.
 With new release of Torbrowser 8.0, it took new graphical interface from
 Firefox 60, but even if it took its accessibility capabilities, they are
 blocked somehow by main application. Nothing is accessible from web
 content to basic browser control elements like alt menu or Connection
 settings dialog.
 Thanks to this bug, it is completely impossible to use Torbrowser with
 screenreaders like NVDA or Jaws. Only way is to use proxi, which is
 however not ideal solution compared to Torbrowser app configured to
 provide no informations about its location.

 This is of concern to me because when Stem launches a tor instance it
 waits for a bootstrap message indicating success. As such, tools like tor-
 prompt hang when not connected to a network.

 This once wasn't the case but I'm unsure when it regressed.

 I think that I have been able to reproduce this issue. It seems that
 "Check for Tor Browser update" is working correctly when the update
 download has not been started yet (and the browser does not know yet that
 an update is available). However, if the update has already been
 downloaded, and the browser is ready to restart to apply the update,
 "Check for Tor Browser update" is not working in that case.

 I removed the setup in config and now handle this in the build file. I
 cleaned up the naming of sdk.zip and ndk.zip as suggested.

 In addition, I collapsed
 [https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/ticket/27438 issue #27438]
 Android Gradle Build Downloads into this same commit. I used the output
 from artc rust program to generate rbm config/build entries for each
 gradle artifact. This does lead to a large number of file entries in the
 config file.

 If the current approach does not look clean enough, artc program can
 package gradle dependencies as a tar file. So its little effort to go this
 route instead.

 I was going to agree with pabs that the right fix is that roles should
 look at Tor's config, and if somebody does an add_onion then Tor's config
 changed, so the role changed ("now we're an onion service role"). But then
 I realized there are controller commands like "resolve" that expect to be
 able to use the network. They aren't changing Tor's config or role,
 they're just trying to *use* Tor.

 Also, every role (onion service, relay, client, directory authority, etc)
 starts by bootstrapping directory information and launching client
 circuits to make sure things are working. So putting that as part of "ALL"
 makes a lot of sense.

 In fact, I think there's a good argument for having us do "the basics" as
 dgoulet called them even when there's no controlport -- first because
 there might be some other exception that we didn't think of that will bite
 us here again, and second because a person who configures their Tor this
 way probably expects it to bootstrap (and also now it'll be closer to
 ready for whatever they ask it to do next). If we think it's a stupid
 config that nobody should use, we should refuse to start with it, not let
 it run but then have it do surprising things.

 android-toolchain now handles the ndk.zip download. I still need to remove
 the ndk file entry from the firefox config. Getting firefox project
 working with the latest android-toolchain changes is next on my list.

 The exit 0 is there since mach package builds the apk, which I believe is
 the final packaging we want. It didn't seem the Mozilla Archive that
 follows is relevant to Android.
