 Looks good to me! We're still waiting for the metrics team to review the

Comment (by cohosh):

 I got proxy-go building with pion/webrtc. The changes necessary were
 fairly small and can be seen

[https://github.com/cohosh/snowflake/commit/8770de768e8852611bb470b9114180a7504b7758
 here]. Datachannel creation and teardown appear to be working as expected
 and some data is flowing through.

 However, I'm having trouble bootstrapping the Tor client past 50%. Here's
 a log of the pion port:

Comment:

 Taking a look at this now. The API is very similar to what we're using and
 the code has been actively maintained this whole time.

 Although the API isn't a direct match, it looks like relatively little
 work to get it hooked up to what we have. I'm going to work on getting it
 building first, and then take a look at the code.

 If this works, it will be '''a lot''' easier to build and maintain.

 Update: in https://github.com/EFForg/https-everywhere/pull/18093, HTTPS
 Everywhere includes WASM optimizations. So Tor Browser would see an OOTB
 performance increase and memory overhead decrease by enabling WASM in
 extension-land.

 As a semi-ignorant user, I would expect the icon to take on one of three
 states:
 * Disconnected, meaning that my proxy isn't able to talk to the broker.
 * Waiting, meaning that my proxy is able to poll the broker and waiting
 for clients.
 * Proxying, meaning that I'm currently serving a client.

 The ability to toggle between Disconnected and Waiting sounds reasonable.

 I think we should also let the user know how useful their proxy has been.
 Maybe something along the lines of "Your snowflake helped X users
 circumvent censorship in the last 24 hours."

 This is a common, regular, frequent, persistent, intermittent, and ongoing
 issue that I first noticed, as I recall, beginning at least 6 or more
 months ago, frequently driving me to rely on 3rd-party sites to check the
 IP address of the exit relay.

 Attempts to connect to https://check.torproject.org/ remain stuck
 commonly, regularly, frequently, persistently, and intermittently at
 "Performing a TLS handshake to check.torproject.org...", remaining stuck
 for up to about 120 seconds, more or less, before the page renders the
 following message:

 "Secure Connection Failed. The connection to check.torproject.org was
 interrupted while the page was loading. The page you are trying to view
 cannot be shown because the authenticity of the received data could not be
 verified. Please contact the website owners to inform them of this
 problem. Learn more…Try Again"

 At other times, attempts to connect to https://check.torproject.org/
 commonly, regularly, frequently, persistently, and intermittently show the
 following page message:

 "The connection has timed out. The server at check.torproject.org is
 taking too long to respond. The site could be temporarily unavailable or
 too busy. Try again in a few moments. If you are unable to load any pages,
 check your computer’s network connection. If your computer or network is
 protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Tor Browser is permitted
 to access the Web. Try Again"

 At other times, attempts to connect to https://check.torproject.org/
 intermittently will establish a successful, timely, and satisfying
 connection with [https://check.torproject.org/ Tor Check].

 Let's improve the [https://check.torproject.org/ Tor Check] connection and
 configuration so that users will experience a consistently reliable,
 successful, and timely connection.

 I will change the verbiage to just say, "x clients connected" based on
 this feedback.

 If you have other suggestions, or features you'd like to see, let me know.

 Something to start thinking about is setting up the credentials / process
 necessary to distribute the extension.

Comment (by atagar):

 Hi teor, yup - agreed. That's my read of those logs as well. Unfortunately
 at this point I suspect the next step is to compile additional logging
 into tor to see what's happening to that request.

 I'd also suggest adjusting the '--test' argument to '--test
 control.controller.test_set_conf' and see if these hangs continue to
 repro. If they do this will considerably cut down the haystack we need to
 look within.

 Anything I can be of assistance with on my end?

 I should also mention that an [https://www.hetzner.com/dedicated-

 Ceasing the unwanted mirroring was done in #23755. New ticket #30890 will

Comment (by acat):

 Thanks for the review :)

 I addressed your comments (and some other small things I found while
 looking at it) in https://github.com/acatarineu/torbutton/commits/10760+1.
 I also squashed the previous 9cf79bcf222cfb1ca47f2cd6f119ac1f19b2f54d,
 ce346d069afa5f1a42dfa13eb8fce2a23cfbf679 and

 0140cfca33be68fedd895672ab7e88f55b023803. The other commits are in the
 same place, with some changes addressing the comments.

 Some of the inconsistencies (but not all) were because initially I had
 more style fixes (all ESLint ones), but I decided to undo most of them
 (and keep the important ones) to reduce the number of changes. I think in
 the process I undid too much (e.g. some of the short-form Services.obs,
 Services.strings, Services.cookies...).

 I'm sorry, I forgot to remove these commented lines. Even though there is
 one that should not have been commented (torbutton_toggle_plugins). For
 torbutton-new-identity, I removed all of them, since the UI element is not
 there anymore.

 >2) In torbutton_utils.js there is Services used, but // let { Services }

 Yes, currently the util functions in this file are used as globals from
 other files. For that, this is loaded via `Services.scriptloader` in

 Right now there are a number of variables and functions that are exposed
 globally in the browser window, from `chrome/content/{tor-circuit-

 globally available symbols are only the strictly necessary.

 Were there plans to have another state to indicate that the proxy is
 polling for clients and therefore ready to accept them? As a user it is a
 bit confusing to see the "offline" state and wonder whether I'm in a
 position to be useful or whether I need to enable something.

 That just means that no client is connected. See the mockups in comment:5

 Until #25601 is implemented, it's a binary state.

 But, this has been a useful exercise since clearly the messaging needs
 improvement.

 I installed the extension (based on commit `7989810`) in Firefox 67.0.2.
 The snowflake icon shows up in my toolbar but it keeps saying "Offline."

 In the browser console, I see the following:

 I could also install the extension in both Chromium and Google Chrome but
 my icon says "Offline" there as well.

 Good news: my contacts at the internet archive tell me we can have a
 collection. We just need to create a user for Tor, and that mostly means
 figuring out an email address to associate with the account. Which email
 should we use? It would preferably be a role alias, not an individual
 user...

 Gotcha. My understanding is that Snowflake uses GitLab whereas the Network

 FWIW, it seems this one gets built in `gomobile`'s `bind_andriodapp.go` in

 "-o="+filepath.Join(androidDir,

 Oh, and the result in the previous comment is for the `armv7` target.

 They are not but it seems we are close. Just `libgojni.so` differs for me
 with what seems to be mostly different tmp directories being used during

Comment (by anarcat):

 i reached out to my contact at IA and wrote to the infrared mailing list.

 Another Grafana update: we went from 163GB to 100GB free in the last 14
 days, getting closer to the 20 or even 30GB per week mark. At this rate,
 we'll run out in 3 weeks. In case of emergency, we can tap into 800GB more
 in the parent host, but we shouldn't burn through all that space because
 that will create other problems elsewhere.

 So, TL;DR: we might be in real trouble here even before Stockholm if we
 don't act quickly. In two weeks, i'll see if we can give us an extra 100GB
 here to work around the immediate crash.

 Replying to [comment:13 cohosh]:
 > * Make it backwards compatable. I'm thinking of doing this by having an
 extra field in the header that should be set to all zeros. If it's not
 zeros, we just forward the data as is. If it is zeros, we extract the
 header.
 Actually another way of doing backwards compatability is to make a new
 handler for the new version.

 There is a patch for review in branch `bug_28672_v6`:

 I did not check yet that the build is reproducible.

Comment:

 The code changed slightly due to
 https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1355443, but it is disabled
 due to Tor Browser being in private browsing mode. (I've not thought about
 whether it is actually a good thing to do but I think we are good here
 following Mozilla).

 I'm going to wait about a week for all the code to merge, and further

 This change is going to conflict with #29280, let's try to merge #29280
 first, then rebase #30591 on #29280's 0.3.5 branch.

 (#29280 is more complex than #30591, which is a simple patch on 0.3.5, and
 a clean merge forward.)

Comment:

 The CI and config look good.
 So do the merges.

 0.3.5 and later is going to conflict with #30591, let's try to merge this
 change, then rebase #30591. (#29280 is more complex than #30951, which is
 a simple patch on 0.3.5 and a clean merge forward.)

 I like that we are re-using "make test-network-all", there's no need to
 mess around with chutney networks vs tor versions.

 We're almost there!

 There's a few tweaks that we need to do for good diagnostics:
 * cat test_network_log on failure
 * show the python version in 0.2.9 and 0.3.5, like we do in 0.4.0 and
 later
   * if we cherry-pick c31346ffb4, the merges might be eaiser
   * but the comment about stem is wrong:
 * in 0.2.9, we don't run stem
 * in 0.3.5 and later, that line just shows the stem version, it
 doesn't actually run stem
 * show the chutney commit hash after we check it out

 (We've needed all this information to diagnose stem and test failures in
 the past, so let's put it in now.)

 There's one fix that I would do, but feel free to do whatever you think is
 easiest to maintain and read:
 * remove the redundant os: linux line (see my comment in the pull request)

 One big drawback we still have for the 32bit builds is that `mar` and
 `mbsdiff` are still 64bit binaries and thus, signing on 32bit systems is
 not working out of the box.

Comment (by gk):

 Compiling our 32bits were failing, too. The first show-stopper was a
 failure related to us setting `host` and `target` to `i686-linux-gnu`:
 {{{
  0:08.82 ERROR: The rust compiler host (x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu) is not
 suitable for the configure host (i686-pc-linux-gnu/i686-unknown-linux-
 gnu).
 }}}
 That gets solved by just keeping `ac_add_options --target=i686-linux-gnu`.

 Then gold is breaking when linking `libxul.so`
 {{{
 41:17.86 /var/tmp/dist/binutils/bin/ld.gold.real: internal error in
 relocate_section, at i386.cc:3684
 41:18.04 clang-8: error: linker command failed with exit code 1 (use -v to
 see invocation)
 }}}
 It seems we hit `gold_assert(sh_type == elfcpp::SHT_REL);` and others
 might have encountered the same, see:
 https://patchwork.openembedded.org/patch/155471/

 I tried to figure out whether a GCC/binutils toolchain fares better but
 that breaks already early with an ICE:
 {{{

 25:10.23../.././gcc/cfgexpand.c:6416
 }}}

 Using `bfd` with `ac_add_options --enable-linker=bff` works and I can
 successfully compile and link the browser. Using `lld` fails, too:
 {{{
 41:04.50 ld.lld: error: dwarf.c:(.debug_info+0x20DE295A): has non-ABS
 relocation R_386_GOTOFF against symbol '.LC25'
 41:08.83 clang-8: error: linker command failed with exit code 1 (use -v to
 see invocation)
 }}}
 Might be worth figuring out at least why `gold` is not happy here.

Comment (by teor):

 Hmm, the output is good, but the `| grep -v SocketClosed` hides the exit
 status.

 I added a commit that sets pipefail.

 I'm not going to do a whole bunch of branches all over again.

 Here are the updated ones:

 0.3.5: https://github.com/torproject/tor/pull/1044

 And a deliberate fail:

 master: https://github.com/torproject/tor/pull/1112

 Duping this over to #29470 which has a workaround.

Comment (by gk):

 Alright we had a user on IRC today and we looked closer at it. The .dmgs
 were not corrupted during download and, yes, as far as I understand it the
 error happens as soon as Tor Browser gets opened.

 Trying to figure something out on the commandline with `hdiutil attach
 -verbose TorBrowser-8.5.1-osx64_nl.dmg` gives:
 {{{
 Initialising…
 DIBackingStoreInstantiatorProbe: interface  0, score  100,
 CBSDBackingStore DIBackingStoreInstantiatorProbe: interface  1,
 score-1000, CBundleBackingStore DIBackingStoreInstantiatorProbe:
 interface  2, score-1000, CRAMBackingStore
 DIBackingStoreInstantiatorProbe: interface  3, score  100,
 CCarbonBackingStore DIBackingStoreInst
 Mounting… 2019-06-14 07:58:37.407 diskimages-helper[12882:447676]
 -remountReturningDictionary: detaching because no mountable
 filesystems. 2019-06-14 07:58:37.408 diskimages-helper[12882:447673]
 _postflightMountPointsAfterDAMount: disk6 aborting because disk
 image has no band size specified. Attaching… Error 112 (no mountable
 file systems). Finishing… DIHLDiskImageAttach() returned 112
 hdiutil: attach failed - no mountable file systems
 }}}
 Then we tried to get things running on an USB stick with minimum security
 but still no dice.
 {{{
 Use right click "Open With" - "DiskImageMounter (default) to start
 mounting dmg files. Same issue again via usb Did this action via Finder
 and PathFinder
 }}}
 Then I pointed to https://superuser.com/questions/19426/im-unable-to-
 mount-a-dmg-getting-a-no-mountable-filesystems-error
 here is what happened:
 {{{
 I first followed the lines in Terminal as follows
 `hdiutil attach -noverify -nomount TorBrowser-8.5.1-osx64_en-US.dmg`
  feedback Terminal in my case /dev/disk7
 Then I entered in Terminal diskutil list
 That shows me indeed all the drives as well as disk7
 Then Terminal command diskutil mountDisk /dev/disk7
 Feedback Terminal -> Volume(s) mounted successfully
 So it all seems OK, but it wasn't yet sine there was nothing mounted. Then
 I went to Disk Utility and follow the article to the moment . to this
 paragraph ->
 I ran into a similar situation. I did what simonair suggested and I
 received a message in Terminal that Volume mounted successfully. However
 It did not help me access the mounted Volume neither was I
 able to confirm the mounted Volume. Nor was I able to mount the image
 using Disk Drill or even scan through. Nothing succeeded.
 Then there's a long paragraph telling to make a new image of the Tor
 Browser which seems not to be active thus Disk Utility - File - New Image
 - Image from tor browser. I kept all default values and it was made. Only
 thing I don't understand it what the file size is now 154MB, but besides
 that
 I clicked the newly created tor browser and now it opened without a fault
 message
 Copied the Tor to Applications, started Tor and it works flawless
 }}}
 So, recreating the image locally seems to solve this. This is a bit
 inconvenient but looking at the StackExchange article it seems this is not
 a Tor Browser (only) issue as a bunch of different .dmg images are
 affected.

 Should we declare victory here and just add an item to our browser
 FAQs/support pages? I am not too famiilar with macOS but this seems more
 like an macOS issue to me than something to fix on our turf.
