Comment (by cypherpunks):

warning users about MitM not end-to-end on https is important. modern
broswers also give non https the label "not secure" ! with still direct
connection and plaintext. but worse is MitM plaintext eavesdropper. This
should be a bold alarming red warning.

thanks for link, i have looked quickly over it and found that it is
incomplete vice-versa. not meaning only the subnet notation difference.
but first found example official public:
 {{{

 }}}

as long this lock will not let you give you falsely think you have
security. anything but not green. like there was yellow locks on mixed
content. orange will remind us of cloudflarecrime only. red like invalid
 certificate.

[tor-bugs] #31347 [Metrics]: Look into Gradle and Maven as alternative build systems for metrics code bases

We recently had some trouble with our use of Ant where we manage
dependencies manually (#31172). We briefly considered upgrading
dependencies manually (#31193), but that turned out to be harder than
expected. We then considered using Ant together with Ivy for external
dependency management (#31326), which is under review at the time of
 creating this ticket.

The next step would be to switch from Ant (and Ivy) to Maven or Gradle.
Without having worked with either of the two, it seems like Maven would be
a tad bit harder to switch to than Gradle. But we should look into both
tools much more closely when making this decision.

Regardless of the choice between the two tools, ''when'' we switch, we
should think about simplifying our build processes and also consider how
they work together with our release and deployment processes.

For example, I still think we should question having six repositories
 (metrics-base, metrics-lib, collector, onionoo, exonerator, metrics-web)
that all depend on each other one way or the other.

I don't think we'll have time for this switch in the next months. But what
we can do is collect thoughts on this topic on this ticket.

We have quite a few translations but a number of them need to be reviewed.

@emmapeel: are you able to follow up with reviewers to get some of the new
strings in abouttor-homepage project reviewed? It's just 2 strings...

Also it wouldn't hurt to try to get some more languages translated

Otherwise we can close this ticket and create a project in gitlab for the

Or just add to the UX media repo...

The people of transifex says they cannot make a different escaping than
the one on the dtd specs, so we should create a githook for the files at

US/torbrowser_strings.dtd?h=tba-torbrowserstringsdtd to be tested with the

 Replying to [comment:24 nickm]:
 > It looks like there are assertion failures reported in the chutney test
 here on travis.

Oops. I managed to reproduce this with chutney and fixed it. I pushed a
fixup. The cause was that v2 initializes the replay cache upon receiving
an INTRO2 cell, so it can be uninitialized in the beginning; I added a
 test against that.

I also pushed a squashed branch because there were some conflicts with
 autosquash:
 https://github.com/torproject/tor/pull/1207

Marking as merge_ready assuming that all CI passes.

We need to test the correct escaping of the files at
 https://git.torproject.org/translation.git on the branch tba-
 torbrowserstringsdtd (only on that branch!)

The files on that branch are used to localize the Android client of the
Tor Browser and don't comply with the standards for dtd files. Thus, we
need to check on them after updates come from transifex, and before we
 attempt to build.

Ideally we can produce a list of the corrections, so we can update it on
the transifex platform and slowly weed out the errors.

We could reuse this githook for other components eventually, so it would
be nice to have some sort of reusable parts:
 * import last translations from transifex
 * run something
 * upload results to transifex?
 * mail or submit results somehow

The script that we can use as a base is at
 https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/ticket/30054#comment:9

 the rules at https://developer.android.com/guide/topics/resources/string-
resource#FormattingAndStyling may not be all needed, as for example it can
be that ' does not break the build.

Comment (by acat):

The integration in #28044 should not change the behaviour of current tor-
launcher, so in slow computers I assume this gap between Tor Launcher
window and main browser window might still be noticeable.

I guess something similar to arthur's third suggestion
 >Embed the Tor Launcher UI in the main browser window. Allow the user to
enter a URL in the URL bar even before Tor is fully launched.
is something that could be implemented in the future to solve this (#31286
can be seen as a first step I think). But not completely sure on the UX
plans for that, and did not find a ticket for that either (but there might
 be).

Comment:

(Only just noticing that the libasm**4**-java Debian package contains
version **5**. I guess that change wasn't breaking enough to change the
 name.)

On Debian it is necessary to add "-lib /usr/share/java" as that's where
 the ivy jar gets installed:

 {{{
 ant -lib /usr/share/java resolve
 }}}

I guess you will rewrite the commit message, but if you do reference the
metrics-base commit make sure to update that because the timestamp will
 likely be different.

Comment (by antonela):

 **Background**

As part of #29197, I'm working with this ticket. Also, I'm trying to cover
some previous issues with this work, such as:

#24452 - Firewall option is visible behind Tor Network Settings... but not
 during start-up
#27476 - Remove gap between Tor Launcher window and main browser window
#25431 - "Tor is censored in my country" does not cover some scenarios

 **User flow**

I'm working with this user flow in the same way we approached the network
settings in TBA (#28329). Even if we are not going to completely remove
Tor Launcher when Tor Browser starts in this iteration, we can discuss
 this flow.

 [[Image(https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/raw-
 attachment/ticket/28329/userflow-1.1.png, 700px)]]

 **User Interface**

For this iteration, I plan to keep *almost* the same user interface we
currently have in Tor Launcher with the big aim of iterating over this
 during our sponsor30 work.

As we discussed before, we want to have a specific section in the regular
Preferences section to configure Tor. That could be
 `about:preferences#network`. It will look like:

 == Network Settings

Tor Browser connects you to the Tor Network run by thousands of volunteers
 around the world. [Learn More]

 **Bridges**

Bridges help you to access to the Tor network in places where Tor is
blocked. This is dummy text now, but it should explain in plain words what
is a bridge and how it can help them. [Learn More]

 [ ] Use a bridge
[ ] Select a bridge [ Choose... ]
[ ] Request a bridge from torproject.org
[ ] Provide a bridge I know

 **Advanced**

 Description? [Learn More]

 [ ] Use a local proxy
[ ] This computer goes through a firewall that only allows connections to
 specific ports

 [ View logs ]

 **Notes**

 * Something I discovered during this process is that we (firefox)
currently have Network Settings in `about:prefereces#general`. Should we
move it to `about:preferences#network`? Should we remove proxy settings
from Network Settings and keep it in `about:prefereces#general`?
 * I really like
Duncan's suggestions] related to the bridge's flow. We should rework it
during Sponsor30 and have it in consideration.
 * If we are ok with this UI, the next step for me is creating mockups and
coordinate with pospeselr for the implementation.

This ticket's waiting on a post-dev-meeting writeup from myself (since I
don't think anyone captured meeting notes) but I don't mind where that
 gets posted.

Doesn't look like there's any more feedback coming in for this version,
and we have a pretty clear idea what the next iterations should include,
so happy to close this and move to gitlab if you prefer!

Comment (by nickm):

On examination, this labs() doesn't belong here at all. The code here is
testing whether we are getting a NETINFO cell fairly soon after we sent a
VERSIONS cell. Using labs() makes it also test whether we are getting a
NETINFO cell no earlier than 3 minutes '''before''' sending the VERSION
 cell, which is silly.

I quite like the idea of using archive.org! We should look into this more.

Comment (by anarcat):

progress: the services and Infrastructure pages have been merged (into
services) and the latter is now deprecated. services should now be
documented in "services" (duh) in the future.

Comment (by anarcat):

thinking more about this, it seems to me we are likely to have duplication
between the services page and the help.tpo wiki. we should consolidate
that somehow eventually. the best example of this is the SVN service that
is listed in "services" in Trac, but documented in help.tpo.

i'm not sure what the distinction is, or should be, but i sure prefer
editing wikis in markdown through a text editor than the Trac markup in a
 web browser... ;)

Building with GCC 9.1.1, I see these:

 {{{
 src/test/test_addr.c: In function ‘test_addr_parse’:
src/test/test_addr.c:1167:1: note: variable tracking size limit exceeded
 with ‘-fvar-tracking-assignments’, retrying without
  1167 | test_addr_parse(void *arg)
   | ^~~
 }}}

This seems to be new in 0.4.2.

Somehow we accidentally merged the protover for padding support while
doing the incremental merge thing, and 0.4.0 relays are advertising
padding that they don't support. This is mostly harmless, because the
negotiation will not succeed and then clients will stop, but it will
result in those clients emitting a "Middle node did not accept our padding
 request" protocol warn/info message.

We should just remove this protover field from 0.4.0.x.

Comment (by mikeperry):

Ok let me try to summarize things here. There are two bugs. The first is
that 0.4.0.x middle nodes are listing padding support, which results in
 the log:
 {{{
Jul 31 14:25:29.971 [warn] Middle node did not accept our padding request
 on circuit 7 (7)
 }}}

 I filed #31356 for this.

The second bug *also* has that warn, and *also* to 0.4.0.x relays not
supporting padding. This is what happens:

 1. We try to negotiate padding with a 0.4.0 relay that doesn't actually
 support it
 2. Before the relay can tell us "no", the introduction point fails, and
the purpose changes from CIRCUIT_PURPOSE_C_INTRODUCE_ACK_WAIT back to
 CIRCUIT_PURPOSE_C_INTRODUCING.
 3. Because the client intro padding machines do not support
CIRCUIT_PURPOSE_C_INTRODUCING purpose circuits, they shut themselves down,
sending a STOP command to the 0.4.0 relay
 4. Then, the original padding reponse from step 1 above finally comes
back, as an error response (since the 0.4.0.x relay did not support
 padding).
 5. Because we got an error response back, we tear down our all of our
padding machine state from the circuit.
 6. Then, the response to the STOP finally comes back, but there is no
padding machine anymore, so the padding is from the "wrong hop", causing
 this warn:
 {{{
Jul 31 14:25:30.467 [warn] Padding negotiated cell from wrong hop on
 circuit 406
 }}}

Fixing #31356 will stop this chain of events from happening.. But because
this cell pattern is different, we're not properly concealing these failed
intro point requests by our circuit padding, because we negotiate
ourselves on and off, and because there are extra intro cells and extends
 here..

Worse than this, if we fix #31356, the chain of events will become:

 1. We try to negotiate padding with a 0.4.1.x relay
 2. Before the relay can tell us "yes", the introduction point fails, and
 the purpose changes to CIRCUIT_PURPOSE_C_INTRODUCING.
 3. The client padding machines sends the STOP command
 4. Then the original padding negotiate response comes back ok. We accept
 it, but do nothing.
 5. Before the STOP response comes back, the introduction point switches
back to CIRCUIT_PURPOSE_C_INTRODUCE_ACK_WAIT, causing us to try to
 negotiate padding again.
 6. The STOP response comes back, causing us to free all machine state.
 7. The negotiated OK response comes back, again from the "wrong hop".

I didn't actually see the 0.4.1 version of the sequence in the logs,
probably because there are not enough 0.4.1 relays yet. but it can happen.

One fix is to add a check in circpad_handle_padding_negotiated() to ignore
STOP commands if we're not expecting them.. But that removes the ability
for relay-side circuit padding machines to shut down the client ones.
 Hrmm..

Comment:

Yes, this is a problem in BridgeDB. I fixed the distribution of vanilla
 IPv6 bridges in my
 [https://github.com/NullHypothesis/bridgedb/tree/fix/14065 fix/14065
 branch].

Note that this patch doesn't fix the distribution of IPv6 PT bridges. The
issue is that bridges currently cannot advertise both an IPv4 and an IPv6
address for pluggable transports (see #11211), which is why a bridge's
`transport` line always contains an IPv4 address.

In theory, we could work around this issue by assuming that a PT bridge
that has an IPv6 OR address also has an IPv6 PT address. This assumption
may not always hold and BridgeDB is currently unable to do active scans to
confirm if this is the case for a given bridge.

Comment (by mikeperry):

Just double-checked all instances in the logs so far, and circuit 188 in
dgoulet's debug logs has the "wrong hop" log message after the purpose
 change from CIRCUIT_PURPOSE_C_INTRODUCE_ACK_WAIT to
CIRCUIT_PURPOSE_C_INTRODUCING, and it *does not* change back to
CIRCUIT_PURPOSE_C_INTRODUCE_ACK_WAIT, but it still has the message. This
 one is a real mystery..

Comment (by mikeperry):

 Replying to [comment:9 mikeperry]:
 > Just double-checked all instances in the logs so far, and circuit 188 in
dgoulet's debug logs has the "wrong hop" log message after the purpose
 change from CIRCUIT_PURPOSE_C_INTRODUCE_ACK_WAIT to
CIRCUIT_PURPOSE_C_INTRODUCING, and it *does not* change back to
CIRCUIT_PURPOSE_C_INTRODUCE_ACK_WAIT, but it still has the message. This
 one is a real mystery..

Ok, in this case, the sequence is:

 1. Client tries to negotiate padding with a 0.4.1 relay
 2. The negotiation comes back ok; padding commences normally
 3. The relay side finishes padding (sends 10 cells or so) and sends a STOP
 command
 4. The intropoint fails, causing the circuit purpose to change from
 CIRCUIT_PURPOSE_C_INTRODUCE_ACK_WAIT to CIRCUIT_PURPOSE_C_INTRODUCING
 5. Client padding machine sends a STOP command
 6. The relay gets the STOP command, responds with STOP,ERROR (because it
had no machines at this point)
 6. Client gets the relay's STOP command and tear down.
 7. Client gets the relay's STOP,ERROR response to our stop command, and
print out the "wrong hop" message (ie since we have no padding machines,
any hop source is the wrong hop).

There's probably quite a few variations on the above..

 > I also realized that in `Bug 8312: Remove "This plugin is disabled"

any defined `doc` variable. It's the same in 52, but I think in the
previous version there was. So I added the `doc` definition, although I
would have to test this to make sure if it works as intended.

Nice catch (and sounds reasonable to me)! Don't spend too much time
testing the Flash use case, though. :)

 > A question before comments: would it also make sense to try to upstream
Bug #5741, with a different commit name and behind the --proxy-bypass-
 protection flag?

I think it would make sense to make sure configurations with a SOCKS proxy
set and remote resolution of DNS to not be able to bypass that if the flag
is set. So, I am all for it to get that upstreamed.

Hrm. I *think* I might have mixed this up with the state of `tor-browser-
 build`, sorry.

it's currently it's in my personal branch. Would it be ok to make the last
`WIP torbutton submodule change` commit a fixup when we have an "official"
 torbutton "esr68" branch?

 Yes, that's cool.

Let's go with what Mozilla's tool wants to have here (and in other cases).

 > I think `GetComputedReferrer()` is the one that preserves the current
patch behaviour (e.g. takes into consideration referrer policy). Actually,
when you mentioned I was not sure whether this was something intended. For
example, with a noreferrer policy navigating through pages of the same
origin will always clear `window.name`. But I saw #3414, so this actually
seems to be the intended behaviour. I added a comment in the code.

 Thanks, sounds good.

approach inboth cases (I am fine with just the moz.build one if we think
 that's enough)

corresponding components.conf empty. Not sure if you meant this, or that
we actually don't need to touch `libmdns` `components.conf`.

What I meant was to approach the patching in both cases the same way: if
we patch in dom/presentation both `moz.build` and the conf file then it
makes it easier to understand the whole patch set if we do that in the
libmdns case, too. So, I think the result is fine.

If so, this is needed because the patch needs to make several
 `GetUser$Directory` non-static, and appa

Comment (by mikeperry):

I am most concerned about the second case in comment:7. The other two
cases are degenerate and the machines were shutting down anyway.

 Possible fixes include:
 1. Add a sequence number, packet number, or padding machine instantiation
counter to the commands, so we can appropriately match the most recent
ones. This requires a new padding protocol version. We can use the field's
absence to mean "yolo, accept it always" because this bug is not that
 severe.
 2. Not start up a machine until the STOP response comes back from the
 previous one.

I don't especially like 2. The optimization that got us into this mess is
supposed to let us immediately replace one machine with another depending
on circuit conditions. That should include tearing the same machine down
and spinning it back up in succession.

I think that leaves option 1: a sequence number check of some kind.

 Any other ideas?

Currently, control events can log messages through the standard logging
module, which can send those logs as control events. This means that some
configurations, future code, or errors might cause an infinite loop.

We should split off a control_event or control_log_event module, and make
it use control safe logging. All it's dependencies should also use control
 safe or signal safe logging.

I think we need to make this change after catalyst's control refactor, to
 avoid merge conflicts.

Comment (by teor):

Nick suggested that we could disable controller logging before logging a
trace log, and enable it afterwards. That might avoid a bunch of the
 refactoring in this branch.
