commit b28d94f in my task-34298 branch] with a possible workaround. Tested
with version 2.2.1. Would be neat if you could also test it with 2.4 while

Comment:

The first question here is how we want to define TTFB/TTLB:
  - Right now, OnionPerf considers the time between the `tgen` client
sending the HTTP request to the `tgen` server and receiving the first/last
byte of the HTTP response back as TTFB/TTLB. This excludes all the magic
happening inside the `tor` client to provide a circuit and attach a stream
to it. In some cases this is pretty fast, for example, when it can reuse a
pre-built circuit to connect via an exit to its own `tgen` server. In
other cases this can take a while, for example, when it needs to do the
entire ~~hidden~~onion service connection establishment dance.
  - The [https://metrics.torproject.org/torperf.html Time to download files
over Tor graph] on the Tor Metrics website measures TTLB as the time
between the `tgen` client starting a measurement and receiving the last
byte of the HTTP response from the `tgen` server. This includes all the
 magic as written above.

I'd argue that we do care about measuring what's going on in `tor`, so we
should switch OnionPerf to the definitions used on the Tor Metrics website
 graph.

Commit a836f87 in my task-34215 branch] contains the trivial patch.
Comments welcome! I'll also bring this up for discussion at our next
 weekly meeting.

tells me that the sudo password is the same as the ldap password, and that

 But anarcat's Sept/Oct 2019 posts to tor-project@ tell me that we're now
enforcing a separate sudo password, and you can set it via ldap.

Is there anything on help.tpo that documents the new sudo situation, so we
can fix the above url to point there? Or is this new text that should be
 written?

I just removed this code in

commit 36c9120] and some other unused/commented out code in

commit 8daed2f]. I decided against putting these commits up for review,
because these changes are pretty simple and only affect the visualization
output, not the measurements. If for some reason somebody wants these
visualizations back, we can still recover them from Git history; though we
would want to update them to pandas/seaborn in that case. Closing.

Now that we took out all other file sizes except for the 5 MiB download,
is there anything left to do here?

What's the main purpose of the oneshot mode anyway? Is it to avoid waiting
for 5 minutes for the first measurement to start? If so, should we work on
adding a configurable, initial pause? Something like:

 {{{

transfer5m

Comment (by ma1):

Sorry for the late answer, but I was unable to comment (the textarea was
 missing).
As correctly guessed by acat, the culprit isan implementation detail of
 https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1462989 (a webRequest
listener can only either delete or merge CSP headers now, not both in the
same callback), which combined to the fact CSP headers injected by
extensions get cached by the browser and automatically reinserted in
cached responses, can cause all sorts of confusions when policies change
 without cache-purging reloads.
The (quite annoying, but effective) work-around is uniquely "tagging"
NoScript's CSP headers, to not interfere with page's own policies or other
extensions (something NoScript already did) and registering a second
auxiliary listener which just does the cleanup by removing the previously
 cached CSP headers.

I hope to release a development build containing this work-around later
today or tomorrow, and a stable AMO auto-update within this week.

note that last time we tried the ganeti retirement procedure, it failed
 (https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/ticket/29399#comment:26). if
this one succeeds, the comment in `tsa-misc/fabric_tpa/ganeti.py` can be

Comment (by hiro):

On the 10th of may there was an unattended upgrade. The kernel was updated
 and the system restarted.
Openvswithch was updated and restarted so maybe the blacklist didn't work.

According to the unattended upgrades logs the following packages were
 handled by need restart:

 {{{

 Restarting services...
  /etc/needrestart/restart.d/dbus.service
  systemctl restart apt-daily-upgrade.service ganeti.service
 smartmontools.service ssh.service strongswan.service syslog-ng.service

Comment:

so far, we're going to throw hardware at this problem if we have any
performance related issues. we have room for this in our budget and ops
would probably give us budget for this migration if we need it.

so let's assume we can just throw one more ganeti node at the problem if
 it occurs.

Comment (by acute):

Hi! I developed and used his mode extensively to test out out changes to
Onionperf code, but also to perform research measurements with a more
limited scope (e.g for comparing different pluggable transports on
 different types of networks).
 Oneshot mode:
  * has no pause at the start
  * terminates after one 5MB download

 It can be used for:
  * testing
  * measurements in simulated networks
  * scripting and automating custom measurements with variable parameters
This was written for an academic research project where it was primarily
used, but other research projects (like the scaling project) could also
benefit from this. Having a configurable number of downloads before
Onionperf shuts down would be very nice, and so would supporting different
 sizes of download.

Having an initial configurable pause is a great start. It is also
important that oneshot mode shuts down after completing (and a new
measurement can be started, e.g after changing some parameters, as part of
 a script).
Hope this helps in understanding the mode a little bit better!

Georg noticed that Firefox 77 and ESR 68.9 will include a fix for this
 bug:
"Read Linux policy from etc/opt directory"
 https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1469629

 Here is the patch:
 https://hg.mozilla.org/releases/mozilla-
 esr68/rev/203a8c227a997c4ae7e970d0ec497d7292078d5c

Unfortunately, with that patch in place, policies will be read from
/etc/firefox/policies/policies.json if it exists. For Tor Browser we do
 not want that behavior.

In the short run we can back out the Mozilla patch. In the long run should
we handle this via a fixup for our #32418 patch.

Comment:

In retrospect, let's not do this. The main reason why we included partial
downloads in Tor Metrics graphs is that we wanted to continue the 50 KiB
and 1 MiB graphs even after stopping those downloads. And we're going to
 keep doing that.

But there's no good reason to plot exactly these partial download times in
OnionPerf, where we typically plot experimental measurements or
comparisons between long-running and experimental measurements. We'll have
 TTFB and TTLB.

Closing as wontfix, even though we can always come back to this and do it
 or a variant of it.

Right now, it's possible to specify both `-o` and `-i` at the same time,
 which doesn't make any sense.

Also, it's rather non-intuitive that both argument defaults are `True` and
that setting either of them changes their value to `False`.

I found this issue while working on #34216, but this issue seemed
sufficiently different to justify having its own ticket. I'll post a patch
 for review in a minute.

In the graph above, it looks like the "before" and "after" overlap for a
bit of time, at the end of April? So how come the old measurements are
fast, and the new measurements are slow, even when they're done at the
