Re: [tor-relays] Question on Unanttended Upgrades

2020-05-05 Thread fl4co
Hi Keifer,

A script generated from that website shows that the Tor Project’s repository
and GPG key are added to apt, so you’ll get updates for Tor from that
repository.

In addition to that, if you select automatic updates the unattended-upgrades
package will be downloaded and configured with this file:
https://github.com/flxn/tor-relay-configurator/blob/master/misc/50unattended-upgrades.Debian

(if you chose Debian). As you can see, TorProject is one of the allowed
origins, so the tor package will be automatically upgraded. Auto-reboot is
turned-off. However, I believe that when tor is updated with apt it will
restart itself.

Cheers

[tor-relays] Question on Unanttended Upgrades

2020-05-05 Thread Keifer Bly
Hello,

I am wondering, does using Unattended upgrades on Linux, when relay is
configured using this configurator:

https://tor-relay.co/

install tor updates automatically when they are released? Does the relay
need to be restarted?

Thanks very much.

[tor-relays] Liberation Day article on running a relay

2020-05-05 Thread Imre Jonk
Hi all,

Today the Netherlands celebrates the 75th anniversary of our liberation
from Nazi Germany by allied troops in 1945. Normally there would be
festivities around the country with presence from organizations like
Bits of Freedom and Amnesty, but those are cancelled because of the
ongoing pandemic. That means that we celebrate from home this year,
which leaves me with time to finish this article:
https://www.imrejonk.nl/running-a-tor-relay/

The goal of the article is to answer frequently asked questions that
aspiring relay operators might have, while linking to authoritative
documentation of the Tor Project as well as this list for further
information. Hope you enjoy reading it, feedback is welcome :)

To protect user privacy, we need more dual-stack relays, before we can have
IPv6-only relays.

At the moment, we're working on improvements to IPv6 support on dual-stack
relays, including IPv6 relay-to-relay connections, IPv6 ORPort reachability
self-tests, and IPv6 address auto-detection. (These features are also useful
for future IPv6-only relays.)

You can read more details in the list archives, search for "Sponsor 55" or
"IPv6". Here's one recent email:
https://lists.torproject.org/pipermail/tor-relays/2020-March/018250.html

Once we have more dual-stack relays, we could work on:
* bridges with inbound IPv6 ORPorts, and outbound IPv4 connectivity
* IPv6-only bridges
* IPv6-only exits

We'll probably start on IPv6-only exits first, because exits are scarce. Here
are some of the issues we need to fix to make that happen:

[tor-relays] IPV6

Is there any work going on which would allow Tor to work with IPV6 alone?
i.e. no IPV4 OR ports etc.

Yes, we would love to have this feature, but nobody has built it.

That's partly because testing the ORPort is relatively easy, because the
Tor program speaks the Tor protocol; but testing the obfs4 port is harder,
because the obfs4 server side doesn't usually do client things too.

Here are two tickets to watch:
https://bugs.torproject.org/30477
https://bugs.torproject.org/31874
...or you don't have to watch, you can jump in and help. :)

In the mean time, also check out the "bridge scan" tool that phw put up:
https://bridges.torproject.org/scan/
which is linked from the instructions in e.g.
https://community.torproject.org/relay/setup/bridge/debian-ubuntu/

Thanks,
