PSA: XP is out of date, and no longer supported by Microsoft. Please
update, if you can't afford MS licensing please consider a Linux OS.

This isn't strictly true. If you are using a 'Super Hub' (Combined cable
modem / router for those of you outside the UK) in modem mode with another
router, if you change the MAC on the router and reboot the Super Hub, you
will get a new IP. Obviously, this requires you swap your router, or have a
router capable of changing it's MAC address...

Therefore if anybody wants to monitor or divert my traffic they can.

Re: [tor-relays] Problems with domestic ISP blocking publicly listed relays

2014-01-28 Thread Matthew Harrold
If possible I'd suggest changing the MAC address of your router or swapping
router entirely, unless you are using on of their 'super' hubs with a
combined modem/router. This will force a new IP address on Virgin Media.

Most distros I have come across have all ports open by default. Do you know
which ports you would like open? Is it just the required ports for Tor +
SSH, or are you running additional services?

Most users use IPTables for firewalling.

I hope that helps.

I dont think running obfsproxy is beneficial on a relay, as the IP is
associated with Tor.

Re: [tor-relays] On the way to more diversity

2013-04-03 Thread Matthew Harrold
This is excellent news! Thanks for your contribution so far!

"abuse handling services" sounds like a great idea to me, I currently run
a relay rather than an exit, but if there was more assistance with abuse
handling, Id seriously consider becoming an exit.

Thanks again,

Matthew

My question is: what happens when my ISP changes my IPAddress? Will

I wouldn't want to put anyone off running an exit, but your home connection
isn't the best situation.

How about running a bridge instead? A dynamic IP will be of more use as a
bridge rather than relay.

[tor-relays] My Relay has slowed significantly.

2013-01-31 Thread Matthew Harrold
Hello all.

This is my first time using a mailing list, so apologies if Im not doing it
right!

I have ran a couple of Tor Relays now for a few months, one was steady and
reliable, and providing about 2MB/s of bandwidth. Of late, its slowed down
dramatically. A reboot resolved it temporarily, but its slowed right down
again, below 500KB/s.
You can see the graph here-
https://atlas.torproject.org/#details/2DAEE4EBA687A517F8B473894341A56820CDDC5E

Does anyone have any suggestions? I have checked with my ISP and they are
not throttling or managing the traffic in anyway, and my CPU and RAM isnt
under heavy load.

Ive uploaded my torrc here- http://pastebin.com/ZCnLQF0w

I have read that file discriptors can also be a problem, Im not sure if
this is relevant but-

$ sysctl fs.file-nr
fs.file-nr = 8320 199036

Thanks in advance for your help, keep up the good work!
