It could also be used with the Controller or a wall mounted Touch. Because it's neither your ears nor your eyes, but your brain that does the fooling. If there's no easily-detected distortion, but rather lack of information, your ears will soon fill that in and you will seemingly switch back-and-forth between similar-sounding audio. Meridian did a test of double-blind tests and concluded that they couldn't use it for internal tests. And since internal tests aren't to prove anything for anyone it's perfectly alright for them to use other methods. But for a reviewer, while flawed, double-blind tests may still be the way to go. I wonder how this is handled internally. Does the Touch run a (stripped down?) server internally or is playing from the SD-Card handled by a completely different software that has nothing to do with Slimserver/Squeezecenter/SqueezeboxServer? Is there any detailed description available which features work without an external slimserver and which don't? It runs the same code as SBS on the desktop. However, it does have some flags set on startup which limits its functionality. For example, it does not support transcoding, so will only serve files that can be played back natively by that player. It also has no web interface as that would create too much of a resources spike and could interrupt normal playback on Touch. Support for the SliMP3 and SB1 has also been disabled because the protocol they used was much more CPU intensive. Oh, and no server plugins by default. That's all I think. -- funkstar my collection: *1*x squeezebox radio *1*x squeezebox touch *1*x squeezebox boom *2*x controller, *1*x receiver *2*x sb3 (sliver/black), *1*x sb2 wired (silver) *1*x sb (black), *1*x slimp3 (with rear shield) interested in any others if you have them! funkstar's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2335 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=69041 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
[SlimDevices: Touch] Wake On LAN
I don't think this is too clever at the moment. I turned my Touch off, whilst it was connected to my local server (or at least the last thing I played on it was some local music). I hibernated my PC (whilst cooking, because the cooker currently has a fault that causes the power to trip). My PC needed to be offline for some time, so I decided to play some internet radio. I turned on the Touch. This must have sent a Wake-On-LAN magic packet, because my server turned on. This is not good - there's no way to attempt to use Touch without causing the local server to power on. On Classic players, it only sends a WOL when attempting to connect/switch to a music source. It is possible to get to the setup screen (via left-arrow) whilst not connected, to select an alternative source (eg. MySqueezebox.com), without sending a WOL to the local music source. Now that music library source switching is meant to be transparent on Touch/Radio, I don't think the WOL packets should be sent automatically when pressing power button, because there isn't the same obvious concept of being currently connected to a particular server. I think that only when I attempt to play something from a music source should it sent the WOL packet. Does everyone agree? If so, I'll raise a bug report. Ok, thanks. I somehow hoped it would be a full server, but already guessed this can't be true. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] USB Drive on Touch Questions
Will the Touch support HFS+ (Journaled) in the future? I know it supports FAT32 out of the box, and someone said it supports EXT3. We have been promised NTFS support in the future, but there has been no mention of HFS+. How does this thing handle multiple partitions on an external USB drive? What if the 2 partitions are formatted differently? The reason I'm asking these questions now is that I am running out of space on my current drives (my Library is split between a FAT32 and HFS+Journaled drive), and I need to get something new. I'd rather format and backup my library in a way that is Touch compatible. I was thinking about an external 2.5 inch FW/USB drive that could also boot up both a PPC and Intel Mac with Leopard (I have already done this with a 400GB drive - it works just fine, you just need to do the initial setup on PPC with APM, and all subsequent updates on Intel; there is even an Apple article explaining this). Anyway, If I could have a single HFS+ J partition, that would be great, otherwise I will need to split it and do HFS+J FAT32 or HFS+J NTFS or HFS+J EXT3. -- Nikhil Nikhil's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=993 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=67487 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
