[SlimDevices: Touch] While waiting for Touch saw Pure Sensia

2009-11-22 Thread kantblue

Hi,

Was considering getting a Touch to add to my collection of SB3, Duet
and Radio, when I saw this in a John Lewis store:

http://www.pure.com/products/product.asp?Product=VL-61294

and to be honest I was blown away by it, it seems to combine the best
parts of the Touch and the Radio with a larger screen and for the same
price!

I'm sticking with the logitech kit for now, but I'd be interested in
any comments from existing Touch users?

I have noticed recently that John Lewis (UK) are now stocking a range
of wireless streamers, this is where I saw the Pure Radio and they have
the Sony and Philips ones in now, but they don't have ANY Logitech
wireless stuff at all, though they used to sell the SB3. They do have
other Logitech items, but no Duet, Boom, Radio or Touch - odd?

yuk.
it's so retro and wouldn't look out of date in a 60's modern home
or in lost in space

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] While waiting for Touch saw Pure Sensia

2009-11-22 Thread kantblue

Hi andynormancx

Thats interesting, I did notice that the touchscreen was a bit
non-responsive, certainly not in the ipod/itouch league. Thought it was
probably just me.

I didn't have a huge amount of time to play with it, but it actually
struck me as a possible replacement for the radio - at least the battery
pack is available for it, it looks as if the Squeezebox radio battery
back won't be available until next year, which, for me rather defeated
the object of purchasing one.

Lou1z, I'm not sure about the style either, I assume its because the
60's are in now, or is the 70's or the 80's or 90's I can't remember
which is the new black at the moment!

Agreed. That has always bugged me about the bugs (ha!). :)
I wish they could just accept validated/registered MySB.com accounts as
slim.bugs accounts. Seems they would get much more user input within
slim.bugs if they didn't require another login/account/registration.
:(

As for the NP screens on Touch, I'm hesitant to say much as this is
still in Beta. But suffice it to say they have many interesting NP
screens in current testing, plus erlands customized NP layouts.
More to come. :)

[SlimDevices: Touch] Touch and PC simultaneously connected to the same extnl. HARDDRIVE

2009-11-22 Thread Dr . Akoya

Hello. I'm looking for an external harddrive solution, so I can access
files on the harddrive from my computer and access music files on a
Squeezebox touch at the same time.

1. It is possible: one external hard drive with 2 USB ports - one port
for the SQBX Touch and one for my PC?

2.Or is there a file browser for the PC that let me access a hard drive
that is connected to SQBX Touch through the USB port on the back ?

3. Or can SqBX Touch find an ethernet connected harddrive on the local
network ((Ethernet Switch))?

4. WHAT IS YOUR IDEA ???!!! (USB, Ethernet or Wi-Fi? - does not matter
- but only ONE harddrive - which external harddrive to buy ??)

(I'm NOT looking for an expensive NAS solution, but an easy and cheap
solution, for having my squeezebox-mp3´s and other files on the same
hard drive, both accesable from PC and the Touch at the same time)

What should I buy? Recommendations?

Thanks for your replies :-)

Dr. Akoya

The SB Touch runs a Samba (file sharing) server. So you can connect any
standard external USB HDD to the SBT's USB port, and the drive contents
will be seen by the rest of the network.

I just noticed that despite the higher pixel resolution, the physical
width of the Touch display is much smaller than that of the old players.
With a decent font size that can be read from across the room a lot of
horizontal scrolling will be required to display the same amount of
text. I wonder how that will turn out in practice.

The display area of the Touch is much larger; all that should be needed
is simple word wrapping.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch screensaver options ?

2009-11-22 Thread usch

Hm. I was hoping that the additional space could be used to display more
information simultaneously, instead of switching between different
screens. For example:

Line 1: Title
Line 2: Artist
Line 3: Album
Line 4: Genre / Rating
Line 5: Bit Rate / Sample Rate
Line 6: RSS News Ticker

If you wrap one of the lines, that would push other information off the
screen at the bottom, so scrolling might be the better alternative. I
just hope there will be a scroll once and stop setting.

  tab).

Yes, I had them both installed. The applet showed up as a screen
saver in SqueezePlay, and the server plugin appeared in the web
interface with the advanced and per-player settings pages. Still the
screen saver displayed just a blank screen. I did not delve further
into it because SqueezePlay itself is so full of bugs that it cannot
be used as a desktop player anyway.

I'm using SqueezePlay during development so it should definitely work.
If you decide to give it another try and get the same problem, post the
server.log file in the 3rd party plugins section of the forum and we can
investigate it further from there.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch and PC simultaneously connected to the same extnl. HARDDRIVE

2009-11-22 Thread JohnSwenson

If your computer will be on whenever the Touch is being used you can
setup a traditional Squeezebox Server on the PC and plug the external HD
into the PC. Both the PC and SBS can access files on the HD.

If the PC will not be on when the Touch is being used you either have
to have the server running on a NAS, or use the internal server and
External drive.

Some NAS solutions are not too expensive, a Vortex box works very well
and comes preloaded with SBS. If you all ready have the external HD you
can get a SheevaPlug ($99) and install the SBS software and plug in the
existing HD. This works well but takes a little effort to get setup.

Or as has been mentioned you can plug the external drive into the Touch
and access it over the network from the PC. Since the Touch is primarily
designed as a music player you might not get super high performance as a
file server, especially if the Touch is playing music while you are
trying to remotely access the files. I'm not sure any body has actually
tested the performance as a file server. (It works, I'm just not sure
how fast)
