Because it's easier!

Don't tell me assigning and maintaining true static IP adresses is
easier than loging into the router and checkmark the devices you want
to keep the same IP (reservation) - thats ONE click pr. device! doesn't
get any easier if you ask me.

I maintain my point:
- DHCP is just fine for most users,
- DHCP reservation is just fine for most advanced users,
- True static IP's is for the IT specialist only.

I use some DHCP reservation myself, but it's just a bad habbit.
Actually it originated from what I thought was Squeezbox problems (2
years ago) but turned out to be a bad combination SBS on Windows Vista
and old router firmware (dropping connection at lease end) - so I
really didn't need to use DHCP reservation, it works just fine without.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] 'local service stopped' error message: related to USB power or album art?

2010-12-03 Thread nthx

I'm +1 on getting an answer to "local service stopped due to a problem".
Guys (devs), please show the exact problem cause on the screen so I know
what to fix.. too many files, artwork, scan not complete... whatever..
just give me detailed message of an error.. or tell where I can find
one...

I'm sick every time I start SBT + Tiny with USB hd attached, after 5-10
mins I have TinySBS saying it stopped.. :(
Usually after starting TinySBS again I've no further problems.. just on
start :(

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch-fatigue

2010-12-03 Thread JohnSwenson

If you have a wire going from the Touch to something else other than a
router (such as a laptop, desktop, another SB etc, pretty much anything
that does NOT have a DHCP server) and you use the advanced->networking
window to connect to ethernet, it will try and connect to a DHCP
server, not find one, give up and let you type in the number yourself.

Once you have the static IP setup you can then connect back to your
normal network.

I doubt that's true if the other end of ethernet cable isn't connected
to anything. Should be the same as having no cable at all.

Same here, but it's crazy how stupid they've made the setup of
something so simple.

a pain yes, and not for the casual user for sure (although before
owning my first SB, I didn't even know what DHCP was...all I knew is
that my router worked and the security seemed to work). But once I saw
a posting on how to do all this, it takes me about 3 minutes to assign
a fixed IP to a TOUCH or CONTROLLER.

If you're running network monitoring software, you should probably use
a more competent DHCP server than whatever junk was installed on your
router.

Home routers typically fail to implement two important DHCP features:
1) they MUST save their DHCP leases to non-volatile memory so that
on
reboot the leases are known. Most home routers do not do this,
which
means if the router and some other device lose power, when the
other
device requests DHCP, the router may give it the IP of a device
that
is already in use. That is bad.

2) DHCP servers SHOULD do a backup sanity check before issuing an
answer:
they should attempt to ping the IP they are about to hand out to
make
sure there is no such device on the network (in cases where the
leases
file is incomplete... see above...) Most home routers don't do
this
either.

If you're running network monitoring software: you have the equipment
to run a DHCP server that can outsmart the cheap belkin/linksys/netgear
junk.

Use a package like dns-masq and you can do neat things:

[gimli:~] 2:18:50pm 60 % ping touch.
PING touch (192.168.2.17) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from touch (192.168.2.17): icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=2.05 ms
etc.

(Ie, dns-masq adds the DHCP hostname to DNS...)

I think if you connect an ethernet cable to the Touch but do not have
the other end connected to the router it then allows you to setup the
IP yourself.
Or just turn off DHCP on the router if you are assigning fixed IP's for
everything anyway.
I'd much rather use router IP reservations myself, it's just a mouse
click compared to entering all of the superfluous info manually (IP,
subnet, DNS, etc..).

agree. but note it is still possible. factory reset your TOUCH then
remove power. Then plug it in to your computer with an ethernet cable.
Then add power to touch. It will try to get IP address then fail.
Scroll down a bit and you'll see the add IP manually option. enter your
address, etc. Then go though WIFI setup if need be to enter password,
etc. Another approach is to setup initially via wifi setup, but have
the DHCP function of your router temporarily turned off. Then it will
also allow you to manually enter IP address. I used this approach to
give my CONTROLLERs fixed IP addresses.

I've used this approach to give all my TOUCH players a fixed IP
address.

Just replaced a failed SB3 with a Touch, and was surprised that Touch
doesn't support assigning an IP address, when the SB3 still does.
Independent of what is "right", why remove functionality, that some
users do use?

As for why? My network monitoring software reports traffic associated
by IP address, so it's nice to have them all stay the same. Yes, can do
it in the router, but why should I have to when the product used to

[SlimDevices: Touch] Touch... reboot loop!

2010-12-03 Thread Blazer

Last night while jumping around some internet radio stations... My Touch
suddenly rebooted but would not come up. I would get the black screen
with the Logitech Logo, then the blue screen with the "discover your
music" then back to the logo screen, and so on...

I pulled the power for a minute and when plugged back in, it did it
again. So then I held in the reset button to get back to factory
defauts. It then displayed a screen about rebooting and asking if I
wanted to send error info to Logitech. I sleected yes and then all was
well. SCARY!

Anyone else ever get stuck in this reboot loop?

I do not think this 'feature' is going to be included anytime soon. As
John mentioned in an earlier post the change looks like it needs to me
made in the firmware, so it will be up to the developers to implement.
There has been no change in the bug ticket status since being assigned
to Vahid Fereydouny and with the minimal number of votes (if that even
makes a difference these days) I am sure it is of very low priority.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Multiple songs generated in a playlist

2010-12-03 Thread drunkenaardvark

I have the same problem, but it occurs irrespective of the source and I
have three sources of music on my harddrive. Those copied from my
computer as mp3, FLAC downloaded by db poweramp, FLAC downloaded using
EAC. I run the USB directly to the touch and have a dedicated USB drive
with only a single copy of each file on the drive

Any more insight on what to try to resolve this is appreciated.

AFAIC, I am using indifferently 2 external HDDs with the Touch running
Tiny SC :

- An externally powered 3.5" LaCie d2 Quadra 1.5Tb
- A bus powered 2.5" La Cie Rikiki 640 Gb

My music collection consists roughly of 1850 Albums / 26000 tracks /
550Gb of FLAC files.

With any of these HDD, I find the Touch usable, but rather slow in its
operation, but that seems not to be related to the HDDs themselves, but
to the size of the collection. Tiny SC is more and more sluggish as
one's collection increases...

Of course, I have no problem using the Touch with any of these HDDs
when SBS runs on an external server.

So, whatever HDD you choose, if you plan using TinySC with around 2
tracks, just don't expect a super fast and fully enjoyable handling of
the Touch. If you don't have to go every 5 mns into numerous menu items
and just plan to listen to a (not too big) playlist (and without any
high-res files), that should work.
