Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] A DAC for the SB

2011-02-11 Thread jeraldrc

I respectfully disagree on the sampling issue. Try the 24/96 version of
HDTracks Steely Dan "Gaucho" compared to the vinyl or CD versions.
Vinyl sounded better but neither was quite right. I think it was early
digital. Breathtaking air!

I don't think this is actually true. The low level driver for the IR
blaster interface (both transmit and receive) has very low level
control over whats happening, it can easily be used for RAW or anything
else. There is a higher level package on top of the low level driver
that implements the higher level codes. Currently the IR commands in
slimproto are routed to the higher level interface which means that RAW
doesn't work out of the box with the existing IR infrastructure. That
doesn't mean its impossible. If someone wants to write some
applications that use the low level interface they can.

So if you want to use RAW you either have to talk to the low level
interface or get the higher level interface rewritten to include RAW.

yes - good point. more data pathway I suppose. still - I believe in
keeping things simple so will see if omitting some of the unecessary
signal transfer steps positively affects what happens when it comes to
the Touch delivering spdif output to my dac..

For me it's with mp3 files.

I've gotten around it by installing a beta version of 7.6.0 from ...

I re-scanned the HD and now the artwork is showing as it should.

Go ahead and try it out, but recognize that the chain you describe is
the "audio pathway" in only the loosest sense of the term. Your
schematic omits the real audio pathway, which is what happens starting
from the Touch's outputs.

ok - thanks.

In the interests of 'simplifying' the audio pathway I'll give this a go
as currently my set up is quite long:
touch>ethernet>homeplug>ancient
mains>homelug>ethernet>router>ethernet>server>all the way back again

it used to be longer before i got a netbook with HDD as my server;)
touch>ethernet>homeplug>ancient
mains>homelug>ethernet>router>wirelss>server>wirless>router>ethernet>NAS>ethenet>router>wireless>server>and
all the way back again.

You definitely don't NEED a router - you just need an IP route from SBS
server to SB player. A cable between the 2 will work. You wouldn't
normally wire it this way if you have a router/dsl gateway (as most
people do)

Netbook via a piece of ethernet cable.

I thought SB devices had to go via a router? Touch>router>server

Is this assumption incorrect and you can use the Touch connected
directly to server running SBS?

And then can you connect from server to the internet for Spotify etc
and get this to work on Touch? Touch>Server>router

Is this set up workable with ipeng?

'Phils soundcheck's-Touch-Toolbox-2.0 measurements'

He figured that my WLAN OFF mod caused one of the biggest impact of all
