Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Newbie with Questions for the Experts

2011-02-13 Thread tmauceri

Yesterday I found 2 copies of the same album in my database, on the VBA,
that weren't there the day before. The album was by Unknown Hinson, a
country type novelty singer/persona. I did not rip this cd on my VBA, I
don't even own it, I had never even heard of this artist before. I did
rip a couple of DVD-A's using DVD Audio Extractor and 2 cd singles
using EAC. I used mp3Tag for the DVD-A material and the data search in
EAC for the singles. My question is how did this album get on my VBA?
Did I access some data base with a trojan horse type of program. Have
any of you had this happen before?

[SlimDevices: Touch] iPeng app on iPhone, affects screen brightness?

2011-02-13 Thread Rick58

I love the iPeng app, never use the Touch (except by remote to change
settings).

Using iPeng, seems that whenever I hit 'back' button in the upper left
corner, it usually affects the screen brightness - seems to cycle to
off, dim, full brightness ... eventually it actually does what it's
supposed to do - return to the previous screen.

Just wondering if anyone else 'sees' this?

You've probably enabled the keep active setting which also enables the

The idea is that you can put it on a desk, face down, and save some

So far I've noticed:
- don't use both sd and usb at the same time; it works but it also
seems to destabilize
- don't use the 'now playing' button on the remote to circle through
song views, use the touch screen for that

Otherwise it seems to work well, including mp3 embedded album art!

[SlimDevices: Touch] Haven't had this much fun since . . .

2011-02-13 Thread guidof

About the Squeezebox Touch:

I haven't had this much fun with an audio gizmo since the Hafler Matrix
(anyone still remembers that one?).

First with the Touch out of the box, then with Soundcheck's mods, then
with rediscovering some forgotten CDs as I (slowly) rip my entire
collection, and finally with being able to listen to 24/96 downloads,
it has been a musically exhilarating few months since the Touch has
lived in my system.

And all of this for $300!

So much music, so little time . . .

Try doing some searches in these forums. (This isn't a smartass reply -
there really is some good information and there have been some in-depth
discussions on the topic.)

Squeezebox Server isn't good at cataloging or presenting classical
music. It takes some work to come up with a compromise between what
most people would like and what SbS is capable of. Erland's Custom
Browse and related plugins may be of some help.

Also look at the guide to tagging classical music in the wiki
(wiki.slimdevices.com). In general the whole tagging scheme (not just
SBS) is not well-adapted to classical music. The wiki and the forums
will give you some good ideas for making the tagging system bend to
your needs. A very important thing is for you to decide how _you_ want
SBS to present classical works, and then be consistent.

I have a Touch with an external SBS running on Linux.

For me, the Touch will finish a track and then jump back to about the
one-third played location on that track. Visually, the track keeps
playing. Volume is at 90, but there is no sound produced out the analog
 output.

If I hit the double arrow next button, the next track might start
playing and the silence might be broken. If power the Touch off, and
start it again then the sound might return. If hard-power-cycle the
Touch, the sound does return, but it will go silent again after a few
 tracks.

Very frustrating. I have had this Touch and my SBS running great for
almost a year. I have 97% MP3s and 3% FLACs. The silence happens on
both MP3s and FLACs. I have not tweaked anything on my setup for a long
time so I have to assume some ~December 2010 firmware update has hosed
 my Touch.

 Anyone else?

It's been over a month...I thought I would risk a bump...

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch with USB drive : mastering TinySB

2011-02-13 Thread pwengland

This is a great thread and congrats to Jean on such a comprehensive
overview.

I am the owner of 2 older Squeezebox's and am thinking of buying 1 new
SB touch very much for the same reasons as Jean, I.e. Not wanting to
leave PCs or NAS running in the house. The only thing I was wondering
is whether a powered USB enclosure maybe a better call in the long
term.

I appreciate it means one more adaptor in the wall, and maybe a touch
more power use, but I have been through 2 standard power adaptors on my
old SB's and just wonder whether SB Touch adaptor and circuitry is up to
powering a USB drive in the longer term.

Any views ?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] dbPowerAmp/Classical Music SB Touch

2011-02-13 Thread Daverz

You'll find some advice on tagging classical music on the Wiki. There's
no standard way to do it.

There are standard tags for COMPOSER, CONDUCTOR and BAND (or
orchestra). Unfortunately, these don't get displayed up front. There
is an option to fold them into artists, but it doesn't work in the
album display or in now playing. These fields do work in searches.

I try to put the composer in the album title and leave ARTIST for the
actual musicians, e.g.

ALBUM: Brahms Tchaikovsky: Violin Concertos
ARTIST: Heifetz; Reiner

If you have a large collection, you should look into Custom
Scan/Browse. At the very least it allows you to create a menu sorted by
the COMPOSER tag, or you can add your own custom tags.
