[SlimDevices: Touch] Jerome linear power supply
I received two Jerome power supplies today and modded both of them to use with my Touch and SB3. This is the Jerome unit: http://www.herbach.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=HAR&Product_Code=TM93PWS2476&Category_Code=PWS *note, they do not ship with AC power cord.and the unit is only 5V, 2A (not 3A), I don't use USB but it could be an issue for someone if they need the extra juice. I went off of the good words that Wayne1 from Bolder had to say from this thread: http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=82815.0 For $10 I'll have to say it's an impressive device, built like a tank. For anyone wanting to go this route I snapped some photos as I went along. As a disclaimer, this is a do at your own risk modification, and may have consequences to both your life, health equipment, etc.. If you are not comfortable with this type of job, simply do not do it. Did I mention this is DO AT YOUR OWN RISK? :) 1. Unit opened up, idea of size http://members.cox.net/themules/size.JPG 2. Internal shot of unit: http://members.cox.net/themules/internal.JPG 3. The unit has a 5 pin DIN plug. The pins and their colors are seen here: http://members.cox.net/themules/colors.jpg Of the 5 wires, only the brown (+5V) and black (common) are needed. 4. DIN diagram located on bottom of unit: http://members.cox.net/themules/diagram.jpg 5. Bottom internal of unit with DIN wire attached: http://members.cox.net/themules/bottom.JPG 6. Job finished: http://members.cox.net/themules/done.JPG 9. Stable voltage (unloaded): http://members.cox.net/themules/voltage.JPG At this point, I can't say for certain if it's an improvement over the stock unit, however, it's most definitely not worse. Audio is sounding most excellent. After a few hours plugged in with SB off, the unit was not even warm to the touch. I will need more hours on it to see where it ends up. I have done the analog cap mod, employ Soundcheck's mods, and now use this linear psu. I am very pleased with what I am now hearing.much improved over the stock Touch in my own experience. -- Stilly77 Stilly77's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=43680 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=90868 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Go to SBS Control Panel, click advanced, click advanced settings. This will bring you to a web interface. Click plugins. The dynamic Playlist plugin is near the bottom under Recommeded third party plugins. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] linear power supplies, done right can improve the Touch.
A DMM will jump around if the leads are floating. I've used scores of DMMs over the years, from cheap ones to ones costing in the thousands, and many Flukes. They've all acted the same. It is actually useful. It indicates to you that you are not making contact with anything conductive. Yes, if you are measuring a DC voltage then they should be steady. Unless the load is very dynamic. Even the best of supplies are not completely stable under highly varying loads. -- regalma1 regalma1's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6658 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=90742 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

My thoughts exactly. I've made some of my Ethernet cables myself, they certainly don't conform to the standards. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] linear power supplies, done right can improve the Touch.
I can only speculate why it is jumping around. It would require a good o'scope to find out if it is "random", ripple (residual AC) or high frequency artifacts from the power supply. It is all speculation. Someday I'll be motivated to do some experiments and even look for noise or distortion using a spectrum analyzer, which we make, so I have access to. Your DMM jumping around when not making measurements is completely normal, by the way. If you want to see it stable touch the two leads together. -- regalma1 regalma1's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6658 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=90742 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Testing different network setups with Touch
It's worth considering the potential mechanisms involved here. The TCP/IP packets themselves are unchanged. What is changing are the sources of extraneous electrical noise and the paths by which that noise may enter your system and interfere with the analogue sections of it (especially within the DAC). Routers (and their power supplies) are great sources of noise that could interfere with the operation of your DAC (or the DAC inside the Touch) or your pre/power amps. The noise can enter via the signal/ground lines of any cables connected to your system. Both mains and line level cables can carry noise into your system, as can ethernet cables into the Touch and the coax cable between your Touch and an external DAC. Steps to managing this noise can include: 1) using Toslink to connect Touch to DAC (galvanic isolation) 2) use of mains filters on switched power supplies 3) replacing cheap and nasty switched supplies on routers with quiter ones 4) using wi-fi instead of wired ethernet 5) ensuring there is no electrical path between router and Touch (ethernet connections are SUPPOSED to have isolating transformers at each end...) 6) avoiding shielded ethernet cables that might cause an unwanted connection to the ground plane. 7) using different DAC's 8) using shielded mains cables 9) ensuring that you have a good clean solid mains connection to earth 10) ensuring all audio cables and connectors are in good condition The interposition of a switch between router an Touch may be breaking a galvanic link between router and Touch (some routers may have imperfect isolation on their LAN sockets). One test to identify possible sources of noise involves physically disconnecting the router mains plug from the wall during playback...playback will continue from the Touch buffer for quite a while. Can you hear a difference? -- Phil Leigh You want to see the signal path BEFORE it gets onto a CD/vinyl...it ain't what you'd call minimal... Very interesting results! It would be interesting to stick in some test equipment and see what the signal is like going to down the network cable before it hits the SBT. There is an obvious difference which there shouldn't be. I use a bog standard router/switch/AP which is supplied by my internet provider (BT HH2) and have the opinion that separate components would be an improvement to my network, but not a cost beneficial one! As I only have basic requirements in my home I've never researched this further but may have to now.. Please update us if you look into this further! -- timearp *Downstairs:* SB Touch. NAD 320BEE.
