Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] 32 vs 64 bit Windows 7 OS

2012-01-12 Thread slate

As your server are dedicated to squeezebox use there will be no
benefit.

The performance as such are the same for 32 or 64 bit code. 64 bit
gives you the option to address more memory and that can give you more
performance if your program can exploit it; However squeezebox server
does not.

If you look in the taskmanager I will guess that windows + antivirus +
squeezebox server does not use more than 900 MB.

But since it is a dedicated server you could look into:
- stopping unneeded services
- uninstall Flash and other not needed programs

On my server I have 35 processes running.

I guess that you have already set the
Settings|Advanced|Performance|Database Memory Config = High

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] 32 vs 64 bit Windows 7 OS

2012-01-12 Thread flyfish2002

I learned a bit (pun intended)!

The laptop shows 3 GB RAM available - not the 4GB installed, which I
understand is due to 32-bit OS.

I know a few who run LMS from Synology NAS with 1GB RAM and 1.8 Ghz
processors with excellent results. I understand the Synology does not
run Windows 7, as well.

I have stopped all other services and removed any programs not needed,
such as Flash, etc.

I have the 64-bit version of Windows 7, but I think I will listen for a
while and see if re-installing Windows 7 to 64-bit is worth the time.
It is not only the re-install of the OS, but also that of the other
programs such as LMS, dbPoweramp, the back-up software, Norton, etc.

It appears improvement if any would be very incremental.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Plugins on the Tiny SBS?

2012-01-12 Thread psch41

Hi,
I've been reading about all the plugins available for the Touch.
However, all the advices/installation hints given there seem to relate
to the PC based Media Server. Can anyone pls help me understand if
plugins (all? none?) work on the Tiny Server as well, and how one would
install them there.

Thanks!

No computer living at home. Ipad fulfills needs at home, if I need more
capability I can bring laptop home... yes I am open to some sort of
interface that uses the laptop.

All files on the VB have simply been ripped from CD's (the VB has a
built-in CD drive)

There's also a router of course, which is connected to the internet.

But primarily all I care about is FLAC files ripped from CD's. I have
no interest in lossy formats.

Ok but it's not uknown to have downloaded lossles files :) or previusly
been ripping on another computer . it is trivial to transfer these rips
to the VB .

Your VB will be a viable as a share on the network and possible to
access by any computer on the same network , VB and the server also
have a web-UI that any computer or possibly the iPad could use .

I don't have a VB so this is what I know.

I do this all the time with my VBA.

Logitech Media Server previusly known as Squeezeboxserver before
Squeezecenter or in the dawn of man slimserver :)

The server software that is used for squeezeboxes .

Your vortexbox contains this + a linux OS + some other tweaks and nice
stuff like the CD ripping ( which is not standard in LMS ).

If you can have more than one device on your connection, i,e, you can
use a switch, then you could do this. What I'd so is set your
computer's MAC address to be the same as that of the Touch (which needs
to be disconnected), plug in the computer and go through the
authentication process. Then disconnect the computer (reset its MAC
address while it is disconnected), and plug in the Touch instead. The
Touch should be able to use the authenticated connection. Then you
should be able to plug your computer back in and re-authenticate.

At this point you'll have two MAC addresses on the same port though,
which is why it's important that they allow you to use multiple devices
via a switch. If they don't then that's when you'd need to consider a
router to give you your own 'local' LAN with only one connection to the
campus LAN.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Plugins on the Tiny SBS?

2012-01-12 Thread JohnSwenson

The onboard server cannot run plugins, but the Touch itself can run what
are called applets, at this point there aren't very many applets.
Plugins run in the server and generally relate to things having to do
with the library, selecting organizing etc. Applets run on the Touch
itself and usually relate to things relating to the user interface
(displaying information, screen savers etc)

A few applications have both a plugin and an applet, the applet
interacts with the user and communicates with the plugin running on the
server.

Ah forgot that good piont. The lines are a bit blured some mysb.com
apps are realy just an extra menu you get acess to and some of them
actually installs stuff on the Touch and there are some third party
applets but not that many.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] At my wit's end!

2012-01-12 Thread JohnSwenson

With Windows there is a thing called internet connection sharing which
does exactly what you want. You tell it to share your computer's wired
connection over a wifi connection. It creates a new wireless LAN that
the Touch may be able to connect to. The problem is that it might be an
ad hoc connection and the Touch may not be able to connect to that.

For sure you can do it with a hardwired connection, get a simple USB to
ethernet adapter (small and cheap) and set the sharing to that new
ethernet port, this has a very good probability of working.

I'm pretty sure a Mac has a similar way to share its internet
connection, but I'm not a Mac person so I can't tell you exactly what
to do. Find the ethernet properties window and see if there is a way to
share.

If this works right you should be able to connect the Touch to the LMS
on the laptop and play music without a connection to the campus
network. If you want to get internet radio or MySB.com you would first
connect to the internet with your laptop's browser, give password etc,
then the internet should be available over the sharing connection.

You are not using the phono input ? ( don't it's different ).

Is the SBT much louder than the old cyrys CDP ?

Try to use lower volume on the volume on the Touch 50-70 percent as
experiment ?

What I'm getting at is if you are overdriving the input. i have no clue
about the cyrys design and whats suposed to be maximum input voltage.
SBT is not very hot, but it is not unknown to overdrive it is usually
some cultish tube designs that have this problem not well enginered
stuff, so a low level possibility.
(The cure here is analog atenuators).
