Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Any 'Audiophile' using an SBT instead of their hi-end CD Player or Transport?
Many old " high end " transports is also operating in real time they read continiusly at 1x and only once so read errors will appear more often that on a computer any old pc can beat that with the proper ripping . Good ripping software re reads iffy parts and try several times to get the data . There is also some hybrid solutions , the MeridianG98DH DVDA player is used for CD's before I got a squeezebox actually use a computer drive and some tricks to read ahead and do it multiple times , so it is essentially " ripping " a disc as it plays them. There really isno point in an elaborate mechanical design at 10k$ to make this real time cd read perfect when you can if allowed some memory buffer do it for 10$ . And actually the computer evolution has served us very well here , if a computer drive had severe read error people would have problem installing software etc. and computer stuff has been lower the prices all the time . So even the cheapest drive today is an amazing piece of technology . Imagine what a computer would cost if it where designed by a high end audio company and the electricity bill to go with that :) And all the tubes you had to change... Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Any 'Audiophile' using an SBT instead of their hi-end CD Player or Transport?
I feel even the "worst" RIP quality could at most produce a few milliseconds of distortions, and rarely at that. If you use the tools and CD ripping discussed above, you will be more than fine. The reduced jitter of the SBT compared to many CD players, coupled with common jitter reduction built into most modern DACs, is what makes a difference. I am quite happy with the SBT as a high-end music front-end. jt25741's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8645 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=97019 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

[SlimDevices: Touch] mysqueezebox.com problems (UK)
There are serious problems with mysqueezebox.com in the UK since yesterday. Please see this thread:- http://forums.logitech.com/t5/Squeezebox-Players/mysqueezebox/m-p/911844#M7663 Basically, it was down most of last night and is intermittent today. Given that a fundamental facility of the Touch (SBT) is that, once set up, it can operate without a PC, this is a serious breach of (UK) Sale of Goods law. The residual problem I now have is that, whilst my SBT can now see Favourites and Apps Gallery (via mysqueezebox.com when it's up) the Player page in the PC browser still shows my SBT as Not Connected. Any of you excellent bods know:- 1. Why my SBT is accessing MySb.com but it shows disconnected? 2. Is (1) important? 3. Whether the password in LMS/Settings should go blank after setting it (seems reasonable). 4. When this mess (Logitech's lousy support for MySB.com) will end? Yes an EAC or dBp rip with accurate rip is as good as it gets . But even if don't do that most CD's rip problem free in a more humble ripper unless you used your CD's as drink coasters, in my case I'd say that most of my disc are scratch free. Rip to lossles flac and use a Touch as player you get the same result or in some cases better than any transport . IMO I have no problem using a squeezebox as " high end " transport . The trick to getting "professional" CD rips is to use the appropriate pen prior to ripping. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Any 'Audiophile' using an SBT instead of their hi-end CD Player or Transport?
There is no substantiation or any data used in the article to support the statement that "Theres a huge difference between a CD ripped by a home computer and one ripped through a professional system." If you: 1. Rip to a lossless format, FLAC, ALAC, APE, WMA-Lossless, etc.; and 2. Use a program which will insure your rip is accurate, e.g. http://www.exactaudiocopy.org/ http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm the rip will be identical to the information on the original CD. This does not require a "professional system", whatever that means. There is a clue as to why the unsubstantiated statement was made. The author is president and co-founder of a company which charges customers to rip their CD's for them. This is from the company's website: -RipDigital's default configuration for converting your CD collection is 192 kbps MP3, while most player software packages claim 128 kbps to be CD quality. The higher bit-rate at which RipDigital encodes guarantees you even better sound quality than you would experience using CD quality on the most popular players. That said, virtually all encoding technologies compress your music. Though indistinguishable to even the most tuned ears, the technical truth is that encoded music is not exactly the same as the original.- I'll pass on the "professional" system ripping my collection to 192 kbps MP3 files and will stick with my FLAC rips using Exact Audio Copy. [SlimDevices: Touch] Any 'Audiophile' using an SBT instead of their hi-end CD Player or Transport?
...and getting good if not better results? I ask this after reading an interesting article about the importance of ripping your music from CDs (if you take that approach). Picking out this particular sentence from the article: "There's a huge difference between a CD ripped by a home computer and one ripped through a professional system" - leads on to imply that when using your home PC to rip your CD's, the quality will not be as good as the original CD itself which could be alarming news for audiophiles if they were unaware of this issue. The article is here: http://www.ecoustics.com/tl/21081/ OK, if you are using the SBT for the convenience then this does not really apply to you. However if you are an audiophile after high quality SQ then this certainly "does" apply to you!! I personally always wondered why a CD player should sound better than an SBT, because an SBT does not have any moving parts or spinning disks to worry about. But if you don't take the greatest of care when it comes to ripping your music then your hi-end CD player or Transport will always be the SQ king (even though not quite so convenient) it would appear. stop-spinning's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=43254 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=97019 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
