I just bought one for use with a laptop. I tested it with the Touch, out
of curiosity. It works perfectly at all sampling rates and the sound is
great (using a Lavry DA11 on the SPDIF side).

If you are happy with Squeezeplay and the LMS web interface than don't
bother with Moose. I use (and love) Moose because I have a very large
music library and once Moose is properly set up and running it is much,
much, much faster than using SBS/LMS to find any given piece of music.
in other words, the search function in Moose is very fast, regardless of
the size of the music library.

Or add a few of _his_ favorites. You'd be surprised how quickly they learn

I assume you mean 24/192. Are you per chance also synching the TOUCH
player to another SB player. If so, and that player handles only 24/48
(like SB3, boom, etc.) then LMS will transcode the stream to 24/48
before it hits your DAC.

It's not so much better bass or treble, it's an obvious improvement in
dimensionality as mentioned earlier - it's very clear and very obvious
using a good quality CD transport (I am talking 5000 worth of CD
player/transport here) - but the point of my exercise was to try and get
a much much cheaper computer based transport to sound at least as good
because a computer (a SBT is a form of computer) does not have to spin a
CD and deal with real time error correction. However, it would seem that
you get what you pay for after all (to date - I am not beaten yet).

I have ripped the CD's using dBpoweramp as carefully as possible into
WAV files. Computer based sources have been SBT and netbook using USB
connected to an Async USB DAC (the same DAC used by the CD transport
which also has SPDIF in).

However I have recently been attracted to buy a heavily discounted Onkyo
ND-S1 digital dock from Richer Sounds (40) - so far getting good
results at home. I am streaming WAV files from a PC to an iPod Touch
(gen 4) docked into the Onkyo which totally bypasses the internal DAC of
the iPod then uses its high precision clock and SPDIF feeding a good
quality output to your chosen DAC...

Yes I have dismissed the SBT and general computer for now in favour of
something which is perhaps a little more 'pure' and dedicated in
extracting the digits using this high precision clock. At least I am
still using a computer source however I am yet to convince my
colleague when I get round to visiting him again. Let's hope that the
ripping element of this whole experiment is not letting the side down
(if you believe the article, then it is). Otherwise it will be garbage
in (i.e. the original rip) garbage out.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Any 'Audiophile' using an SBT instead of their hi-end CD Player or Transport?

2012-11-05 Thread garym

Perhaps there is something in your setup causing this difference
(hardware interference?). Don't know. Could be and at least this is a
scientifically possible explanation. But I can assure you that if the
CDs are ripped to WAV (or FLAC) with DbPA and the rip returned a Secure
indication (or better yet an AccurateRip match of more than "1" so that
the secure rip matched a secure rip on at least one other person's rip)
then the rip is bit perfect. And there is no such thing as "more" vs
"less" pure bit perfect. Bit perfect is bit perfect in terms of rips.

And not sure which articles you are talking about. But if it is the
"Absolute Sound" articles on ripping, these are completely laughable in
terms of any reality whatsoever. They are equivalent to arguing that the
earth is flat. The tests performed and conclusions reported are so over
the top wrong I can't even begin to describe. See, for example:

I don't have a large library . Since I am Classical music fan , I dont
search by individual songs. I will stick with Squeezeplay or LMS Web
interface. Thanks

[SlimDevices: Touch] Control one Touch with another

2012-11-05 Thread Xenthar

Having never owned any, I ordered 3 touches today and yesterday. Two
new, one second hand.

I'm going to place one near the place where I often lie down to rest
(call it my couch) and one near my desk. Both are in the same room
(living room). Both would be connected to the same DAC.

I wonder if it's necessary to connect both of them. I guess it would be
more prudent, more flexible. Both would be coaxial.

But if both are turned on, they should sync with one another, right? I
could just as easily start playback on the one, and have the other one
deliver the actual audio.

But the thing is... I've always known there would be another electrical
device in that spot (right side of desk) but I didn't know what. Then I
ordered those 3 SBxs and then I realized it would be a touch. I'm also
buying sleeving for the audio cables (very nice: 'image'
(http://hifisupply.nl/data/articles/images/big/b_1041.jpg)), and I
realized I would have sleeving applied to that by-the-desk spot before I
knew what to put it on. So now I know.

I guess then that the anwer will be, better just run a cable. Still I'd
like to know whether it would be possible. Ah now I know. I will get
sleeving for the 3rd SB as well. That's all I need.

What's a high end transport anyway?

The Plinius CD101 costs ~£4k but uses the same transport as an ASUS
52x cdr costing maybe £20.

Same laser getting the bits off the CD which is really all that counts
;)
