I'd consider the Edifier R1280T: $100. Got to be the value leader at
that price.

I like the Wirecutter reviews, because they usually do a good job of
explaining their choices with a minimum of jargon, so you can decide if
your criteria are the same as the reviewers'. The Presonus Eris 3.5 is
their budget pick for "best computer speakers" and is within your price
range:

https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-computer-speakers/#budget-pick-presonus-eris-e3-5-bt

The version without bluetooth is just $100. I see mostly good reports on
these speakers, but I have never heard them in operation.

The Mackie that's their top choice is out of your price range, but some
smaller Mackie models are under $150. Be sure to read the comments about
those in the section on "The Competition," though.

It might also be worth your time to visit the section on powered
speakers in their guide to bookshelf speakers:

I bought a set of Neumi speakers, I posted about them here:

They are pretty nice I guess but probably don't fit your definition of
compact.

Not sure they'll work for that budget, but my new, shiny white
AudioEngine A2s are wonderful little things, very impressive in spacious
sound for such small units. I believe a slightly earlier version may
get in budget on the secondary market - and they got very good reviews
too, being more or less the same cones and amp.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Touch + which compact powered speakers?

2022-02-25 Thread TomS

I am looking to use a spare touch to replace a (fading screen) Boom.
But I need some powered speakers to go with it. I would like to keep it
very compact (the touch + the speakers), so looking for suggestions on
small powered speakers to pair with the touch.

Any recommendations for speakers in the $100-150 range (or happily less
if possible)?

Thanks,

while we are telling these stories, I have a seasonal cabin in an area
in Northern NY, where there are maybe 20-30 people on a long dirt road.
For the longest time all we had was DSL on old, crappy, undocumented
phone lines, that nobody understands, buried in the dirt, sometimes
sticking out. In the spring, when a family would come in to open their
camp, the phone/dsl truck would come to hook them up and mess with the
wiring in what we call "tombstones" by the road. As a result someone
else would go down. Often it was me. It got pretty funny loosing
internet and quickly jumping in our trucks to go down the road to find
the service truck to tell him what he caused (and block him from
leaving). It got to the point where we all got anxious when we saw their
trucks going down the road. I would turn on a sb radio so I could hear
if I went down!

It got to where if the internet went down, my wife would say "well, the
cummings must be here!"

A year ago we got new fiber (part of an initiative to get "high speed"
in rural underserved areas). But even seeing their trucks get us a bit
anxious. We have not healed.

Isn't that what Mobile (Cell) phones and neighbours are for?

In the 13 years I have occupied this flat I have lost the steam phone
line three times and the internet never! The problem was the BT wireman
messing with the connections in the street cabinet. My Father-in-Law
kept his internet in a neighbouring flat while losing his telephone, but
for a different reason. Someone at the exchange had turned him off.

you guys don't have cell phones? :).

How about using a cell phone in a location of no cell coverage to report
that your power is down. Then you realize your phone was working because
it was using wifi calling, which is down with the power. Of course, this
is a new realization to you every time it occurs!:o

It does for me now after some messing. My British Telecom contract
rolled over yesterday, and that seems to have upset a few things. I have
just had to reboot PiCorePlayer and the Chromecast Audio.

For the Brits in this forum I haggled hard with BT - my block of flats
now has a fibre installation from Toob to every door which yields
900Mb/s down and up for £25. My FTTC Fibre 1 with BT gives 60Mb/s and 20
upload - plenty fast enough for me, but BT had to beat £25 - I got it
for £22 and kept the phone number which I don't need. (Vonage offered
with Toob at extra cost.) The BT phone is now "Digital Voice" which is
what BT calls their new VOIP service. Transition was seamless - I just
had to pull the telephone plug out of the wall and stuff it in the back
of the Router. They seem to be doing this well, but are getting grief
for turning off the steam powered telephone service. For years I have
used VOIP with a Siemens Gigaset hybrid DECT/VOIP phones and Sipgate
accounts.

Well that was off track! But yes
http://rondo.iradio.fi:8000/klasupro.flac now works and sounds good. If
I click the URL in Chrome on my Chromebook the station plays on the
default ChromeOS audio player. LMS is more convenient, as always!

Some nice piano music on Rodo now. Thanks for the prompt, Van Man.
