Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Scan experiences with the internal squeezebox server of the Touch (USB-HD)
Yeah, I am going to pass on the Touch until they get the internal server working correctly. Sadly, I just can't do the whole network thing in my house. Couldn't one create a database on the external USB hard drive using a PC, and then just hook it up to the Touch and go? -- bingcrosby bingcrosby's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=34653 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77600 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Playlists when using USB drive
So what will happen if I attach a USB hard drive to a new Touch, and there is a folder with over 100 songs and a few images in it? Will the scan crash? If it does scan properly, and I then want to play all the tracks in that folder, would that not work? Couldn't I just navigate to that folder and then Play all? I'm not really interested in creating playlists (I plan to listen to tracks as if they were on a CD) but I do have some folders with over 100 music files. -- bingcrosby bingcrosby's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=34653 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77386 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Squeezebox Touch Sound Quality with USB Drive
So any four arrangements of flac/wav TinySC/SBS are measurabely the same via analog and digital? Its just your listening experience (which not always can be technically quantified) was amazing with SBS, and wow with TinySC via analog. No difference between the servers with digital. Could the power supply harmonic due to the headphone ampilifier possibly reduce the SNR of the device and the effective resolution of the internal DAC? Also, do you experience any change in listening experience or measurable change in outputs with an external powered vs USB powered harddrive connected directly to the Touch? Aside, any one know when the Touch is coming to Australia? -- bingcrosby bingcrosby's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=34653 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77158 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Squeezebox Touch Sound Quality with USB Drive
Phil, I almost purchased a Stefan Audio Art cable a few years ago when they were on special. However, I bought a hifi stand for $550 reduced from $900 instead. The reason why I haven't bought them since (the same reason I haven't rewired my mission 782 speakers) is that I feel they will remove the glow and warmth of the headphones. In short, they might be different (perhaps better), but they aren't HD650s anymore. And they are the same price as the Touch almost! And a significant fraction of the price of the HD800s. From a technical point of view, I've often been concerned about impedance matching when rewiring. Reviews also suggested the presence of microphony on the aftermarket cables, which is a pain. Sure upgrades like cables might offer you a way of improving your system without selling up and buying a whole new kit. But I think it is better to make fewer and larger leaps, saving yourself money. My Nordost cable costs the same as the HD800s all up, and I'd rather have them and copper cable than just the Nordost. My view anyway, learning the hard way. -- bingcrosby bingcrosby's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=34653 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77158 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Oh, I'll try removing the foam, see what it does anyway. Probably not the best to expose the coils but let's see anyway. -- bingcrosby bingcrosby's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=34653 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77158 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
[SlimDevices: Touch] Squeezebox Touch Sound Quality with USB Drive
Hey guys, I plan to purchase a Touch to avoid going down the PC streamer route. I will be connecting it to an external hard drive directly via USB. But I have a few questions about this: 1) I have previously read that a directly connected USB drive with FLAC files does not have the same sound quality as using SBS on a PC streaming the same file in WAV format? Apparently, this was audible with $5 headphones. This was a while ago, so could somebody confirm if this is still the case. Does this effect only over analog outputs, or digital outputs as well? 2) Does the Touch enable gapless playback? If so, do I just get EAC to rip CDs as normal and the gaps will be in the flac files, or do I need to create cue sheets? In addition, if I rip an album to a directory, will the Touch automatically play through the whole album? 3) Does the Touch take a long time to scan files on the USB drive? Often, I might buy a CD, rip it to the USB drive and then reconnect the drive to the Touch. Will this cause long browsing delays? Thanks in advance!!! -- bingcrosby bingcrosby's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=34653 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77158 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Squeezebox Touch Sound Quality with USB Drive
Sorry, let me add a fourth. 4) Can a crossfeed plugin be installed to TinySC? Would the extra processing required comprimise sound quality? Does the plugin take effect when using the digital output? Obviously, this is no longer a bit perfect signal, but is turning the volume of the Touch to maximum enough to ensure no quality loss relative to the original, i.e., modified bit perfect? -- bingcrosby bingcrosby's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=34653 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77158 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Squeezebox Touch Sound Quality with USB Drive
@peterw Thankyou, but I won't be connecting the Touch to a home network. It will be just taking the USB drive between the PC and Touch I'm afraid. -- bingcrosby bingcrosby's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=34653 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77158 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Change power supply
Thanks Dave but I am looking more for a HDD with a good power supply than a DAC (I will probably use the one in the Naim SUPERNAIT). Is there a limit to the size of the external powered hard drive? -- bingcrosby bingcrosby's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=34653 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=72014 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] What will the Touch do to 16/44.1 over SPDIF
Does the touch alter a 24 bit input signal(with sampling rate no higher than 96 kHz) by adding bits? Also does it support any sampling rate between 32 kHz and 96 kHz? I have a dac which is upto 24 bit 96 kHz compatible, but due to the noise floor of the analog some say the actual resolution of the dac is a bit lower than this ~ 20 bit. If the touch adds zeroes to a 16 bit CD to make it 24 bit, will I infact loose some of the CD data due a shifting in the position of the bits? -- bingcrosby bingcrosby's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=34653 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=71345 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
[SlimDevices: Touch] Change power supply
Hey guys, This is my first post! I have heard that the switch-mode power supplies supplied with the SB Touch are not ideal as they generate RF noise. I will be using it only as a digital transport to play EAC rips and 24 bit files from a hard disk and USB stick. I am planning to hook this up to some Naim gear and they warn against RF noise and digital outputs with switch mode power supplies. Does the re-designed digital output of the touch make finding a linear power supply unnecessary? If it still could represent an improvement, how does one go about finding a toroidal power supply for it? Regards and thanks, Peter. -- bingcrosby bingcrosby's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=34653 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=72014 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
