Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Announce: Enhanced Digital Output app - USB Dac and 192k Digital Ouput
I suggest keeping the list simple and focused on objective factors. It should concentrated on - whether the USB input of the dac is compatible with EDO - what, if any, special procedure is required for compatibility - Is a USB2 hub required, and if so, from which sampling rate - up to what frequency is the USB input working - what quircks exist, if any One could arguably add some statements about whether users prefered the USB to the SPDIF input (this includes a degree of subjectivity) The google doc spreadsheet meets most of the above points eiffel's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=46208 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=94512 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Announce: Enhanced Digital Output app - USB Dac and 192k Digital Ouput
With all due respect... - A SBT is highly likely to be cheaper than a silent computer (and will be more energy efficient... if you pay for electricity!) - Much less tweaking will be required to install EDO than to set up a half decent computer for bit perfect audio playback (see the 7 steps approach in http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?94512-Announce-Enhanced-Digital-Output-app-USB-Dac-and-192k-Digital-Ouput) - Size, reliability, etc also come to hand Obviously, a SBT is not the best solution for a multipurpose machine... eiffel's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=46208 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=94512 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

I'm not sure what happened in my previous testing (same system, etc.), but I can identify reliably which outputs are used, and the external DAC gives better results. The SBT analog outputs have a slight metallic sound. the external DAC's rendition is more nuanced/less aggressive and is overall more pleasant/musical/natural. The difference is easy to spot on voices (even streamed talk radio!). Increasing volume above my normal listening level accentuates the difference This doesn't make the SBT standalone a bad solution, and I could live happily with it, had I not heard heard the improvement the MDAC gives. For what it's worth I used two SBTs in this testing (a 24 hours old one with no mods for analog and optical out, a separate one with USB/EDO), the MDAC runs firmware 0.99 + OTXD filter (default setting, + 7db attenuation) and is connected via balanced interconnects to an Audio Research LS15 + Rotel RB1080 + Totem Mani-2s. I can't yet say which of the USB or toslink connection to my DAC is better (one thing at a time), or which MDAC settings works best. eiffel's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=46208 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=95790 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Replace Duet with Touch?
Having just made an attempt at comparing the Duet Receiver (SBR) and the Touch (SBT) with and without external DACs (Theta DS3Pro, Audiolab MDAC with and without EDO), with matched volume levels, here are my observations: - The SBR analog outs are not as good as the SBT's. The difference is not night and days but can be reliably detected in blind testing ("lack of air, less musical, reduced soundstage") - With some 88.2/24 bit tracks (or with some higher sample rates), the downconversion performed for the SBR can result in some hiss (This is repeatable, but doesn't happen with all such tracks) - The analog outs of the SBT are actually very good and very close to what the MDAC on Toslink can deliver. There is a difference on some tracks, but in my limited testing, it's not that easy to say which is which, and which is better. - In terms of digital outs, there is little difference between the SBR and SBT on Toslink (and presumably Coax, although I didn't test this) - I think (More investigation is needed) that the SBT with async USB connection (Using Triode's EDO without TT mods and the MDAC) improves on Toslink. I need to find a way to test this more reliably with will likely require longer listening and some assistant to remove any bias The SBT has some other merits which make it the logical choice for people who buy into the SB system. In my view it is one of the great audio bargains of the moment... but one has a good external DAC and a Duet, it may only bring marginal improvement eiffel's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=46208 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=95790 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Announce: Enhanced Digital Output app - USB Dac and 192k Digital Ouput
Triode, First thank you very much for you help. Uninstalling the 0.5 applet and reinstalling it has fixed my issue (everything is peachy even with fixed volume). Not sure what happened before , but I'm a happy camper. I did look in the /var/log/messages, but can't find much relevant besides possibly a few warnings such as: "Apr 22 22:21:39 squeezeplay: WARN net.thread - NetworkThread.lua:146 network thread timeout for Task(SocketHttp {fab4.squeezenetwork.com}(R))" I'm assuming the issue I experienced was a fluke with the update. Triode wrote: > If you turn the volume down from 100%, does it work? Is this a usb2 > high speed dac? Making volume adjustable and lowering it doesn't resolve my issue, and neither does adding a USB2 hub (powered or not). The UCA202 is not a usb2 high speed dac, as this is a very cheap adaptive device limited to 48kHz (in that sense, if version 0.5 works with the type of DACs it is intended for, an not this one, this would be fine) eiffel's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=46208 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=94512 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Announce: Enhanced Digital Output app - USB Dac and 192k Digital Ouput
It seems that version 0.5 broke something with my Behringer UCA202 DAC (connected directly without a hub), as when I enable the USB output, the SBT keeps on rebooting (it's find with the digital only out). The previous versions worked fine. eiffel's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=46208 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=94512 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Announce: Enhanced Digital Output app - USB Dac and 192k Digital Ouput
While I'm waiting for my long term DAC (Audiolab MDAC), I've tested this plugin with an alternative USB DAC, the mighty Behringer UCA202. It works great, even without a USB hub... This being said there is little point in using this DAC as it only supports 32,44.1 and 48kHz sample rates and is of the adaptive type (its input is supposedly asynchronous). The DAC of the SBT is more capable and is likely to sound better. eiffel's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=46208 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=94512 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Asynch USB vs. non-USB
The main advantage of the Asynch USB connection is the elimination of clock jitter. Basically, rather than having to recover a clock signal from the signal sent by the SBT to the DAC (Push), the asynch USB approach allows the DAC to control when it receives information (Pull). SBTs are fairly good wrt jitter using their coax or optical outputs, but the asynch USB connection does away with this issue. -- eiffel eiffel's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=46208 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=94218 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
