Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch + which compact powered speakers?

2022-02-25 Thread sodface

I bought a set of Neumi speakers, I posted about them here:
https://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?114270-Aopen-Chromebase-Mini-with-Alpine-Linux-Squeezelite-and-Jivelite&p=1024799&viewfull=1#post1024799

They are pretty nice I guess but probably don't fit your definition of
compact.

Though slim on details, another possible solution here (a swap partition
on the USB stick?)

You're probably right though I guess it might depend a little on how
"random" the random playlist is and whether it plays all songs at least
once before repeating songs, Granted, the "bad" file hypothesis does
seem like a bit of a stretch.

I guess I was just wondering if you could come up with an experiment
that would break through the 5 day barrier, which would then perhaps
point at something with the library as opposed to a software issue.

Is it possible that it's one specific song or artwork file (or multiple
that meet the same criteria, whatever that might be) that's crashing the
server and so removing the offending file(s) could fix the problem?
Since joegorin seems to be using a static library, if the library didn't
contain any "bad" music or art files then it might play forever?

Would playing a single song on loop or a smaller collection (an hour or
so?) be worth trying to see how long playback goes with a known "good"
file or set of files?

You may well be right about the memory leak, but I meant to make the
distinction in my previous post that maybe it's not an internet
connection that the Touch is looking for but rather a connection to
something external, either mysqueezebox.com or an LMS on the local LAN
(which itself may or may not be connected to the internet).

The other difference in your setup is that you still would have needed
to configure some IPv4 settings on the Touch's wired interface. Did you
set a static IP or did you run DHCP on your disconnected LMS server?
What settings did you set on the Touch - just IP and mask or did you
fill in dummy settings for default route, DNS, etc.? I don't think
joegorin has indicated what his exact configuration is in that regard.

I'm interested to see the results of joegorin's upcoming tests.

I don't have a Touch so can't test any of this, and you guys seem to
know what you're talking about so I'm not arguing any position here, I'm
just interested in it sort of tangentially for my travel trailer project
and I'm trying to reconcile what joegorin is reporting with the informed
replies to the contrary. For instance, I don't know what joegorin meant
when he said this after he connected a loopback plug in the ethernet
port:

"If you try to start with a loopback, you are not allowed to play music
at all."

What does that mean? It's hard to understand the above statement if a
network connection has nothing to do with playing local music.

And he also says this:

"I found today, experimentally, that if I connect it to a Wi-Fi channel
on my router that has no internet connectivity, it will not play the
music on the USB thumb drive in the Touch. The messages displayed still
make me think it has to "phone home" to be enabled."

Again, not sure how to interpret that alongside the other comments about
a network connection not being required.

Thanks for that info. It's a piddly thing, but, I think in the case of
the Radio's alarm, at least some of the sound files are on
mysqueezebox.com so they presumably wouldn't work without an internet
connection even with a local LMS.

Point taken.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Running without Internet Connection

2019-03-13 Thread sodface

Not that it matters or changes reality, but, I agree with joegorin on
this. A product that includes a local music server instance and
includes ports to connect media locally should be able to play local
music without an internet connection, and apparently does but only for 5
days or so. If an internet connection was a hard requirement, it should
either refuse to play altogether if it can't phone home or at least
display a clear message immediately so the user knows what the deal is
(instead of waiting 5 days and crapping out). It's a little unfair to
point at the box and say "It says Network Music Player!"

It was Logitech's product so they can and did do want they wanted but I
don't think joegorin is off base with what he expected the touch to be
able to do as a disconnected player with a local server instance.

Does anyone have a good link that details what happens if
mysqueezebox.com can't be reached, by squeezebox type if that makes a
difference? I've been meaning to look into this as I was thinking about
setting up a pi based LMS in our travel trailer and using it with a
radio if I can ever find a decent one on ebay. Trailer park wifi is
usually pretty bad so I think spotty or no connection would probably be
the norm.

I'm also wondering if the loopback connector idea could still work,
depending on what the "phone home" consists of. Does it just have to
reach the mysqueezebox.com domain? Does it need a successful login?
With a loopback plug and an entry in the /etc/hosts file for
mysqueezebox.com pointing at the 127.0.0.1 loopback address, the domain
would be appear to be reachable but obviously a login would fail, though
maybe that could be spoofed too with a local script of some kind, maybe
a plugin to the local LMS?

@joegorin, sorry the loopback made it worse. I'd been meaning to try a
loopback in my "smart" tv to see if it would turn off it's continuous
wifi scanning since I don't use it, and finally did after recommending
it to you. It seems to have done the trick in my case.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Running without Internet Connection

Do you have the crimp tool and connector to make an RJ-45 loopback plug?
Attached are a couple of pinouts. I think for 10/100, all you'd need
is the second one, and you might be able to get by with just cutting one
end off of a spare cat5 cable and making the connections as shown,
preferably with a bit of solder and heat shrink but whatever works!

That should at least bring the port up permanently so that the touch
thinks it has a link. Of course, it won't be able to communicate with
anything so if it just needs to sense a link than it might work, but if
it's looking for a response from something than it might not help at
all.
