No, it can't be disabled.  If you don't like the level that it ends up
at you can bump the brightness level up a little.  That's about all you
can do.

Its there on purpose to increase the longevity of the backlight LEDs.
They last longer if not driven to max all the time. 

Sure it can be disabled, but it takes some hacking of the code.

I notice the screen brightness dims a bit after ten seconds or so?
Any way to switch this off?
