Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Power Management - Energy Saving Switch

2011-02-17 Thread AndrueC

I don't think that's the cause but either way it's still a bug :)

The server is always available when the Touch powers on. I'm often home
when it powers on at 4:30pm and there's no prompt to configure. It just
powers up and sits quietly either showing the clock or the home
screen.

I've also checked the server after it's powered up to the home menu it
knows about the Touch so communication has been established. If you
touch the standby icon on the home screen after power on it goes
straight to the clock.

It might be that it has issues getting a connection but:

* It's not saying anything about it on screen.
* It establishes it within a few seconds so why continue to sit at the
home screen?

I've enabled logging and I'm going to power cycle it right now. See
what happens :)

Well we've confirmed it now. Sometimes the Touch powers on showing the
clock, sometimes showing the home screen. No pattern to it that we can
discern. That's with the latest SBS - update a couple of weeks ago if I
remember correctly.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Power Management - Energy Saving Switch

2011-02-14 Thread JohnSwenson

The clock issue may be related to time. When the Touch powers up it
doesn't have a reliable time (it doesn't have a battery backed up RTC),
it needs to go out to a server to get the time. If it has not received
the time from a server it will not display the clock (better to not
display the clock than to display a completely bogus time) If you are
running stand alone (USB drive and TinySBS) the clock will not display
unless the Touch can connect either to a local SBS somewhere on your
network or connect to mysb.com over the internet.

If you don't have a local SBS then it has to connect over the internet
to mysb.com to get the time. If something is preventing that connection
you won't get a clock. Normally the Touch will try and connect to a
local server first, if there isn't one it will try and connect to
mysb.com. If there is an internet issue, or if mysb.com is not
connecting (sometimes it has problems and players can't connect), no
clock.

We're not saying it doesn't reconnect. We're saying that -some
settings- are forgotten or not honoured. Both myself and the thread
starter can play music on power up however:

*The thread starter is losing their language settings.
*I am getting the home screen instead of the clock.

It's possible that sometimes I am getting the clock but I'm not sure.
Someone else might have seen the home screen and manually turned it off
thereby causing the clock to appear.

No, I fully understand your posts. I was simply pointing out that I
remove power, restore power, and all works, including keeping all my
settings. This is not to discount your issues, just a data point to
help you diagnose your problems, and to confirm that it is not a
problem affecting everyone, i.e., the answer to the question of whether
pulling the plug causes any problemsno, at least in my case).

Pretty much - the only difference is that you are using an external SBS
running 24/7. My server is the touch itself.

Are there any other disadvantages when switching the power off every
night?

I have a touch and boom at a weekend place. I pull the plug on these
when gone and doesn't cause any issue. I restore power on arrival and
everything boots up and connects with no intervention from me. Works
well.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Power Management - Energy Saving Switch

2011-02-01 Thread ri.widhalm

Hi,

I wondered if its a problem for Touch with TinySBS and USB-HDD
(external power supply) to switch it completely off with an energy
saving switch.

One thing I'm experiencing is, that the language setting is always
gone. Are there other settings missing after power on?

What I like is, that the TinySBS is autamatically on after power on,
that I only have to select an album and play my music without starting
the SBS and connecting the USB-HDD every day.

I know that the Touch (including the HDD) doesn't need much energy but
my other equipment on the same power socket does, especially my cable
receiver.

br,
Richard
