So I assigned a static IP to the VortexBox, and it seems completely solved. About 8 hours of playback with no glitches so far. -- lunchmoney lunchmoney's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=50760 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=91135 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Are you still running static IP addresses on the vbox and the Touch? The problem might be the DHCP server on the router not responding fast enough in which case the static IP addresses could very well fix the problem. Probably about 85% of the network issues I have to deal with (my own, relatives, groups I administer etc) have to do with DHCP issues. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Audio cutting out, please help!
Ok, so I hooked up a simple 5-port switch between the vbox and sqbox, router is no longer connected. Seems to be working fine so far, no glitches after a few hours of playback, fingers crossed. So assuming it's fixed, it seems to be an issue with the router. Of course I'm now not able to rip more cd's, and I can't control from my ipad. Next step will be to connect the router to the 5-port switch, to see if A.the problem returns, B. the vbox and sqbox can talk to the internet, and C. I can resume control with the ipad... ...I'm hoping that the new 5-port switch will allow the sqbox and vbox to talk to each other more directly, bypassing whatever glitch the router was causing. I'll keep y'all posted. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Audio cutting out, please help!
A home router usually consists of four parts: 1: router/firewall 2: DHCP server 3: wireless access point 4: switch The first three are programs running on a small computer (its frequently actually linux running on the computer). The switch is a separate chip independant of the computer, but the computer talks to one of the ports on the switch. Since those first three are programs on a computer they can sometimes go off and do strange things and can sometimes run slower and slower due to bugs in the programs. Rebooting every so often can really help this. When you run the VortexBox to a Touch with ethernet cable you are just going through the switch, it is bypassing the computer, so issues with rebooting software don't really apply. The only service from the computer part you would be using is the DHCP server, but if that is not working you don't get anything, not a slowdown etc. Now it certainly is possible for the switch itself to go bad (ANY hardware can go bad!) but its much less likely than having an issue with the software running on the computer part of the router. If you are concerned about the router being bad you can try a friends router, it doesn't have to be hooked up to the internet, it doesn't matter what the wifi settings are etc, just plug the VortexBox and the Touch into the ports on the back and see if it works any better. Even if the router is working all right, there are a few things that have occassionally caused problems. One is ethernet speed, the Touch is a 10/100 device and most computers are gigahertz, this is SUPPOSED to be completely transparent, but it has been known to cause problems. If the router is a 10/100 router and the VB is 1gig that might be an issue. Alternatively if the router is 1gig (the touch is 10/100) that side might be the problem. Cables have also been known to cause problems. Sometimes the connector on the end of a cable just doesn't make good contact, or the cable itself might have been compromised (someone bent it with a very tight radius etc), these can usually be fixed by trying another cable. Thats about all I can think of. NOV 8 UPDATE: Still having same issues. I have tried: 1. Hard wiring everything. All ethernet now, connections verified. No more wifi. So not a WiFi issue!!! 2. Rebooting all 3 devices. 3. Changing channels on router. 4. I have checked the logs for the VortexBox, nothing in the logs... so very likely it's not the VBox. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Audio cutting out, please help!
routers may need a reboot now and then, so you pull the plug . they should not need it but they do. The vortexbox is a computer with on and off button so turning it off may have suficed. The general advice is to first boot the router and be sure that it is running and then the server and finally the player and other stuff , is probably to avoid some bugginess in dhcp and be sure everything gets new ip adresses asigned in some orderly fashion. And if you have an ip conflict you will notice when everythingnstarts to fall apart. Other posibilities. Some routers have some kind of autoselecting of wifi channels , it may have picked a better channel this restart ( a better idea is to find out which one to use and set that permanently ). Some users have a mix of static ip assigned stuff and dhcp stuff, but forgets to limit the routers dhcp range so it can sometimes assign ip that already is used. -- Mnyb Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J MeridianHD621 MeridianG98DH 2 x MeridianDSP5200 MeridianDSP5200HC 2 xMeridianDSP3100 +Rel Stadium 3 sub. Probably the best test for determining if its wifi or not is to plug an ethernet cable from the touch to the router, make sure you switch the Touch over to using ethernet rather than wifi (its under settings->advanced->network). If the touch is a long way away from the router then temporarily bring it next to the router for the test. If this works then its a good probability its wifi related. If you still have the problem then its a whole different set of issues to look for. So for now its best to see if the problem goes away with the Touch direct connected to the router. I periodically have this problem with my Touch too. Never had wifi issues before I inserted the Touch and 7.6.1 about a month ago. Since then, the same problem you describe. What I do, after initially (and futilely) fiddling with firewall settings, router settings, port forwarding, eliminating 3rd party plug-ins and lots of other stuff, is simply unplug the modem and router from the wall, wait 20 - 30 seconds, then plug them back in.
