Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] WiFi dead? What are my options?
FYI, I suggest *not using* Edimax EW-7438RPn. I bought some months ago to facilitate upgrading my WiFi from TKIP to AES (so that real Squeezeboxes would need Ethernet). The Edimax tested OK with TKIP but I couldn't get them going with AES. Edimax's newest firmware for that was released in 2015, so I think it's hopeless and am going to try the same newer Vonets that JPEG got. owner of the stuff at https://tuxreborn.netlify.app/ (which used to reside at *www. tux.org/~peterw/*) Note: The best way to reach me is email or PM, as I don't spend much time on the forums. *Free plugins:* AllQuiet Auto Dim/AutoDisplay BlankSaver ContextMenu DenonSerial FuzzyTime KidsPlay KitchenTimer PlayLog PowerCenter/BottleRocket SaverSwitcher SettingsManager SleepFade StatusFirst SyncOptions VolumeLock peterw's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2107 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=115308 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] WiFi dead? What are my options?
I was still having strange intermittent wifi failures on my Touch. So, I bought a Vonets VAR11N-300 which I plug into the Ethernet port on this Touch. The Vonets unit is in Bridge mode. One thing to note: I needed an external USB 5V/1A wall wart to power the Vonets; the USB power out of my Touch was not sufficient. That is a minor bummer -- it would be very clean to power the Vonets off the Touch itself. I will monitor this closely and report back if I still have issues. After an hour of freakin' out over the "Network not found" message, I finally joined this forum (about time, I've had my Touch for around 15 years) and realized that I hadn't done a full factory reset. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] WiFi dead? What are my options?
My daughter's Touch fell off the WiFi last week. It's been stable for ages. I could see the AP but not connect and a factory reset didn't help. Happily I have 2 Touch spare (and 4 SB 3, cough) so I swapped it. Reading this thread today has reminded me that I've seen this before and swapping power fixed it. However I've already built her a picoreplayer which she's receiving tomorrow so that will solve everything. The remaining Touch in the house are on the cat 5. gvh's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1879 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=115308 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] WiFi dead? What are my options?
My touch has the same sickness. At first it was intermittent and eventually no way to use WiFi. Every time we were hit with a power outage the Touch struggled to get back online when the power came back. And as others said when the issue happens the WiFi NIC doesnt even show up in the options anymore. So its like the firmware doesnt recognize and initialize it at boot time. Whats so puzzling is that the issue was a gradual decline over about a years worth of time and I just dont see how this fits with the chipset being bad. I get capacitor aging but there dont seem to be electrolyte based caps in the Touch. On a SB3 recapping fixed issues and it was very obvious on an oscilloscope how the rails were dirty before and clean afterwards. This one smells like a timing issue. I also noticed that somehow temperature played a role when the issue was intermittently happening. After being off for a long time it wouldnt work - period. Once up for some time and then rebooting it would come back. But it got worse to the point where I gave up and wired it with Ethernet. I wish someone would get to the bottom of this. Hi, I wouldn't discard a damaged integrated circuit or electrical connection. I remember one case from my first years as an electronics engineer, a maker of integrated circuits had gone mad about a problem with a client. In the end it was found chips were damaged by electrostatic discharge but still working as far as ambient humidity was within a range. waldo's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=19888 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=115308 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] WiFi dead? What are my options?
I did some further investigations, looking at the module that interfaces the hardware to the os, /lib/modules/2.6.26.8-rt16-332-g5849bfa/sd8686.ko it shows a size of 2038303 bytes. I googled around and managed to find another forum showing the size and there it was different, 2039023 bytes. That could maybe be a indication that this file is corrupted, but that seems unlikely as I suppose it is replaced when a new fw is loaded and that it load without complaints. Maybe it's so simple that some substandard component are used and that manifests it now on devices that has been powered for a long time. carpelux's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=72333 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=115308 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] WiFi dead? What are my options?
I have tried to enable the old access point, but that didn't change anything. Actually I don't think it's anything wrong the WiFi environment as all the other things that are attached to it works well. Some 30 devices ranging from clients to various other and IOT things, including 3 SB Radios and 4 squeezelite-ESP32. I did connect the touch via ethernet and used ssh to log in to it. When i tried to start the wlan interface via the init script it inserts the module '/lib/modules/2.6.26.8-rt16-332-g5849bfa/sd8686.ko' but then it doesn't seem to find the hardware. My touches are still alive (one on wifi), so I have not tried this, but if your touches are fine on ethernet, others have used vonet wifi dongles, which (I have read) can be powered by the USB port of the touch. minimal cost and worth a try, even if just for debug purposes Jim Redrum's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=33806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=115308 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

If the WLAN module is really dead and you need Wifi - thgen you can use an external Wifi to Ethernet adaptor Some user which had Wifi problems with Radio have used a Vonets VAP-11G with success - powered through in line connection but with Touch you have possibility of using Touch USB socket for power (IIRC up to 500mA) . Vonets http://www.vonets.com/productviews.asp?d_id=86 There are many types of adaptors that can provide the Wifi to Ethernet conversion such as nanorouters (in reverse AP mode) or extenders such as NetGear EX3700 and using Ethernet connection. An external adaptor can also provide access to Wifi capabilities such as 5G. bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=115308 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
