As you can see in compositor report from any of our demo servers:

0.506 ms/frame, latency 15.669 ms, 61 frames over 1.007 sec, 0% bypassed

I think this is only "medium" though, because it's a transparent
optimization so its absence is very hard to notice in most cases.

Bug description:
mir_buffer_stream_swap_buffers_sync hangs due to incorrect wait handle
signaling in mir::client::BufferStream mostly due to handling
  disconnection from the server.

The server may have returned a buffer right after
  display_server.submit_buffer, in which case mcl::BufferStream::submit
does not set any pending expected results in the wait handle (correct)
but before the caller gets a chance to "wait" on the handle, the
server may disconnect, in which case
  mcl::BufferStream::buffer_unavailable incorrectly calls
next_buffer_wait_handle.result_received() so the wait handle never
  signals (received(1) != expected(0))

Bug description:
Hardware: Android (Nexus 7), using slimport cable to drive external monitor.
  Using Mir 0.13

The intention is to configure USC to clone the contents of the
internal display to the external display (id=1), but with those
  contents rotated 90 degrees.

Check out revision 220 of lp:~unity-team/unity-system-compositor
  /toggle-cursor2/

I am implementing a DisplayConfigurationPolicy like this:
  http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/11830210/
I've got some print statements in there too.

On testing this, there are 2 cases:

  1. Slimport cable connected at server startup
Here, the external monitor comes up rotated correctly. I see the debug
statements print.

  2. Slimport cable *not* connected at server startup
First off, I do not see my debug statement print at server start.
Secondly, when I do plug in the slimport cable, while I see my debug prints,
the external monitor does not get rotated.

You can explicitly tell USC to rotate the external display with dbus (install
qdbus-qt5 first):
   qdbus --system com.canonical.Unity.Screen /
com.canonical.Unity.Screen.overrideOrientation 1 90
  so rotation does work.

  2- $ sudo tail -f /var/log/lightdm/unity-system-compositor.log

  3- touch the screen

  expected outcome:
you see the log lines appearing for the touch events as they happen

  actual outcome:
the log file is written after every N bytes of android-input logging take
place. So the update happens in chunks and sometimes it stops in the middle of
a log entry.

  1. mir_demo_server_minimal --nbuffers=2
  2. mir_demo_client_egltriangle -q &
  3. mir_demo_client_egltriangle -f

Expected: A fullscreen triangle rendering smoothly.
  Observed: A fullscreen triangle stuttering.

Strangely the problem only occurs with multiple clients. Like the
extra load is causing a delay in the return of buffers to the
fullscreen client. It doesn't happen if you only have one client
  running.

  Workarounds:
  (A) Move/resize the fullscreen surface (Alt+drag) so that it is not using
bypass any more; or
  (B) --nbuffers=3
  (C) --bypass=off

The desire was to resize all surfaces to the size of the smallest

  usc::WindowManager implements the mir::shell::WindowManagement
interface. I thought it logical to implement this resizing in
add_display. However it causes a deadlock when plugging in a second
display, while the compositor is stopping, see this backtrace:

  http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/11831907/

I suspect Threads 8 and Thread 1 are blocking eachother.

[regression] Clients are blocked in swap buffers when the screen turns
off. This came about since dynamic double buffering was introduced in
  r2763.

With triple buffers, the screen turning off just makes clients slow
down to 10Hz. However since r2763, well performing clients that are
given double buffers will be blocked when the screen turns off.

IMHO, the 10Hz behaviour is a mistake for Ubuntu's power management.
It's a historical kludge we implemented to support buggy apps, but
it's still a supported feature and so should continue to work.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 798414] Re: update-initramfs should produce a more helpful error when there isn't enough free space

2015-08-24 Thread David Gerstmann
In addition to what I said in comment #59... If what I wrote does not work for
you and the other "solutions" are too complicated for your time sensitive
schedules (as they are for me), then I recommend that you reinstall Ubuntu
14.04 LTS on your computer as I had to. This, I think, will clear up any
"dependency" issues related to kernals. Then faithfully follow my instructions
in comment # 59 above. This has worked for me so far. Occasionally the sudo
apt-get process in comment # 59 seems to fail, but I've ignored those little
hiccups and just tried again and once again it seems to work (fingers crossed,
eyes crossed, and for Bill Canaday in comment # 57... flying fickle fingers
crossed.). Until someone wiser and techier comes along, good luck fellow
Ubuntu brothers and sistas.

P.S. Please let me know how this works for you.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1488007] [NEW] Bluetooth doesn't find hc-05 devices

2015-08-24 Thread Birger
Public bug reported:

This bug affects the GUI of the bluetooth-indicator on my fully updated
ubuntu phone.

The hc-05 is the most common bluetooth device in electronics. I use it
together with an arduino microprocessor. The bluetooth indicator doesn't
find the device and so it cannot pair. With my ubuntu laptop and my
android device everything works fine.

However the device can be found via the hcitool -scan command in the
terminal on the ubuntu phone. It can also be paired via bluez-simple-
agent hci0 xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx So basically bluetooth works but
unfortunately not the simple way.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1480877] Re: Access points' "PropertiesChanged" dbus signals freeze UI on mobile devices

2015-08-24 Thread Andrea Bernabei
I'm quite sure I had the same bug this weekend, the phone was really
unusable, kept freezing every few seconds, I used the terminal app to
see that it was the usual burst of PropertiesChanged.

I don't have stats and logs as I was out, and the phone died before I got home.
I'll have to wait a couple of days more for the phone to become annoyingly slow
again.

Title:
Access points' "PropertiesChanged" dbus signals freeze UI on mobile
  devices

Status in indicator-network package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete
Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Krillin, rc-proposed, r83

  DESCRIPTION:
I've been trying to track down the cause of the occasional UI freezes on my
Krillin device, and I noticed that whenever the UI freezes for 2-4 seconds, I
get a burst of "PropertiesChanged" signals in dbus-monitor

  Here's a log of what's shown in dbus-monitor:
  http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/11992322/

I'd guess the problem is in the code that actually catches the signals
  and acts accordingly.

  HOW TO REPRODUCE:
  1) Move to a place where many wifi hotspots are available
  2) Connect the device via USB and run "phablet-shell" and then "dbus-monitor"
  3) Use the device while keeping an eye on dbus-monitor output

Bug description:
The idea would to have at least a fake APP_ID for developping and

but the crash doesn't give a good developer experience.

Maybe we can decide on having an APP_ID=fake in the developer default
template, and then, content-hub let that ID pass even if not
  installed?

Note that one of the side effect of this crash after transfer is that
the tmeporary files under HubIncoming aren't cleaned up.

There's a Pressed enum in ucubuntushape.h but it's private, maybe just
make it public?

This is slightly related to bug 1457528.

In my case, I have an application using the 14.10 framework and importing
Ubuntu.Components 1.0.
In that version, Theme *is not deprecated*, therefore I shouldn't see any
warnings.

That should be the case up to 1.2, where Theme is still documented as
  not being deprecated.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1488072] [NEW] Headset loud warning issues when the screen is blank

2015-08-24 Thread Dave Morley
Public bug reported:

STEPS:
This is a behavioural bug and may require input from design.

1. Install the latest rc-proposed image
2. Plug in a wired headset
3. Play some music
4. Tap on cancel the the volume is dropped below the acceptable level
5. Blank the screen
6. Tap the volume up button

EXPECTED:
I expect something to tell me I need to wake the phone to accept the policy so
the volume raises above the 50% level

ACTUAL:
The popup appear but gives no indication that it is there so you have no idea
why the volume isn't increasing.

POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS:
1. An audible ping so you know that this volume up is doing something different
2. Wake the screen so the information is visible, only issue here is that the
cancel or accept button might be pressed so then there is no idea why it didn't
work
3. Flash the led like you do for messages to get the users attention.

** Affects: indicator-sound (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1424714] Re: Word suggestions do not list the most "likely" correction first or at all

Hi,

See also Bug #1482896 , which contains in particular a proposition of
improvement of word prediction/correction according to the keyboard
layout, more specifically regarding accentuated letters.

Status in ubuntu-keyboard:

Status in ubuntu-keyboard package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
This seems to be behind some of the complaints about the osk
usability. The list of suggestions typically includes the word the
user intends, but it is not rated higher than other words that are not
  even in the dictionary.

For example, I try to enter "then" but mistype it as "tgen" I am
  offered:

"Tgen Gen T Gen Then Ten Gent"

I would expect Then to be listed first, followed by Ten.
I do not expect to see any f the other solutions.

Another example is entering "abd" instead of "and" - the offerings do
not really make any sense and this is an extremely common word and
  mistyping.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1488080] [NEW] Should not use generic contact avatar

2015-08-24 Thread Michał Karnicki
Public bug reported:

I'm not sure I'm filing the bug against the right package.

The persistent notifications on vivid (phone) show a generic
human/contact icon, if no avatar was specified. However, that image may
not match all contexts in terms of who/what posted the notification (it
may be a server monitoring system, for instance, so clearly not a
person).

current build number: 24
device name: krillin
channel: ubuntu-touch/stable/bq-aquaris.en
last update: 2015-07-22 14:36:08
version version: 24
version ubuntu: 20150713
version device: 20150529-8e13c5f
version custom: 20150709-814-29-21-vivid

---

Feedback from Patricia Davila (design):

Yes, I agree, a generic contact icon does not add value or give any info
to the user in the context of a notification. As I mentioned, if the
avatar is not present, the notification artwork should display the
originating application's icon by default, rather than an generic
placeholder or 'nothing' at worst.

Please see the following spec for more information on layout and
behaviour of notifications in the notification centre:

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1488080] Re: Should not use generic contact avatar

2015-08-24 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thanks but that's not how things work, the icon is coming from the
client code adding the entry. The contact one is e.g used by telephony-
service. Can you provide steps to get an entry which is not from a
person with a buddy icon? That service would be where the bug is

  Feedback from Patricia Davila (design):

Yes, I agree, a generic contact icon does not add value or give any
info to the user in the context of a notification. As I mentioned, if
the avatar is not present, the notification artwork should display the
originating application's icon by default, rather than an generic
  placeholder or 'nothing' at worst.

Please see the following spec for more information on layout and
behaviour of notifications in the notification centre:

This is slightly related to bug 1457528.

In my case, I have an application using the 14.10 framework and importing
Ubuntu.Components 1.0.
In that version, Theme *is not deprecated*, therefore I shouldn't see any
warnings.

That should be the case up to 1.2, where Theme is still documented as
  not being deprecated.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1486872] Re: Can skip wizard steps after you tap on notification"Storage device detected"

2015-08-24 Thread Michael Terry
(Note that all wizard setup work is optional. It can all be done from
System Settings afterward. So while this bug is an annoyance, it
doesn't break anything on your phone.)

My rationale for this behavior was originally that "if the user is
already comfortable using the phone, they don't need a helping hand,
just let them use it." But I grant that some people might just click on
a notification and then be lost.

I suppose that to fix this, we'd need to confirm some things with
design. I'd guess that we'd want to disable edges so that you can't
open the launcher, open the panel, or right-edge swipe from any app
that opens during the wizard or tutorial. And maybe not even show the
panel, if you can't interact with it. So basically the interaction mode
we use for the emergency phone.

But then how do you exit the app? The emergency phone has a special
button for it. But not every app that opens during the wizard is
closable from within the app. (External Storage isn't, nor is
Messaging) Without that user flow, I don't know how to force the user
back into the wizard when they are done with the app.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1481388] Re: NTP : Use-after-free in routing socket code after dropping root

2015-08-24 Thread Eric Desrochers
I was able to reproduce the problem on PRECISE (12.04) by lowering the
kernel parameter value "net.core.rmem_max".

And then test my .deb build on my PPA[1] with the following upstream
commits :

- d6df9d3 [Bug 2224] Use-after-free in routing socket code after dropping root.
- db47bd4 [Bug 2890] Ignore ENOBUFS on routing netlink socket.

What the patch does ?
===
The program first "read" from the fd. On success, the number of bytes written
into buf is
returned. On error, the call returns −1 and sets errno

If the call returns -1, then there is a verification to validate if the
errno == ENOBUFS

and then send to syslog the following message : "routing socket reports:
No buffer space available"

Otherwise, if errno is NOT ENOBUFS, then it close the socket
(remove_asyncio_reader(reader);) and free the memory space
(delete_asyncio_reader(reader);)

And send to syslog the following message : i/o error on routing socket
No buffer space available - disabling

Before this patch, no matter what was the errno, it was automatically
close() and free() without validation if ENOBUFS or not.

To summarize, the patch allow the program to not close() and free() the socket
when the a errno == ENOBUFS occur, but still send a message in syslog to notify
the administrator.
===

If after installing the patch, you are receiving this kind of message in
/var/log/syslog : "routing socket reports: No buffer space available"
The next step, would be to increase the "net.core.rmem_max" and
"net.core.wmem_max"values equally until the "routing socket reports: No
buffer space available" message no longer showed up.

they don’t seem to work at all. Could this be a duplicate of bug #1408760 ?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1487754] Re: Local storage not working properly

2015-08-24 Thread Olivier Tilloy
It looks like a race condition to me. I managed to observe this only
once in repeated attempts: the last item I entered in the todo-list
didn’t get saved. Since bug #1456267 was fixed (in oxide 1.8), local
storage data gets flushed to disk when the app becomes inactive, which
happens as soon as opening the apps exposé. It could be that the app was
closed fast enough that it didn’t allow the data to actually be written
to disk. Not sure what can be done about that. Adding an oxide task to
track the issue anyway.

Bug description:
  Hi,

I noticed some days ago now, that local storage (and may be other web
storage) not persist data randomly.
It's pretty easy to show the issue with a website which use local storage.

  To reproduce this issue :
  - With a phone or emulator, go to http://todomvc.com/examples/angularjs/
  - Create a simple todo list
  - Close the browser
  - Open the browser
  - And go back to http://todomvc.com/examples/angularjs/
  - If data are correctly restored, reproduce all the step and you will see,
sometimes, it not restore the last local storage.

So the issue is present in Browser.

I also noticed, it happens in webview, for example in my application :
https://uappexplorer.com/app/yaoswa.inglebard
So the problem exist in Webview too.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1447395] Re: Zoom needed for better readability

2015-08-24 Thread Olivier Tilloy
Not the best of all workflows, but there is a "readability" app in the
store that you can install, and then from the browser menu select share
and use that app as a destination, this will open the current URL in a
new webview in readability mode. Very nice for reading news articles.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1487713] Re: Url field replaced while loading a page

2015-08-24 Thread Olivier Tilloy

Url field cleared/replaced when editing while loading a page

Status in webbrowser-app package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:

The current app has a very annoying bug that causes the URL field to
be cleared/replaced while you are editing it.

  How to reproduce:
1 - Open the web browser app
2 - Before the last page be fully open, Go the URL field and try to input a
new value

  Expected:
3 - You be able to input the desired url, and go to the new url site

  Current:
4 - If you take longer (3-4 secs) to edit the the url it get replaced or
sometimes cleared and you need to start write the url again.

OBS: this is easy to reproduce while using a 3g/4g because it take
longer to load the last opened page while starting the app.

I can reproduce it 100% or the time.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1432171] Re: [udev] Shows "starting version 219" boot message even with "quiet"

2015-08-24 Thread Matt R
i had the same problem with simply a black screen and 'starting version
219'

This is how i fixed it hope it works for others...

I think the problem happened during the orginal update so i rebooted and
went into my bootloader (got there by pressing f12 but for some it may
be shift'), chose advanced options and loaded an earlier version of
ubuntu. Then i did the usual sudo apt-get update && upgrade which fixed
the problem.

A very simple fix but hopefully it will help others out
