[Touch-packages] [Bug 1737379] [NEW] display backlight turns full on every minute
Public bug reported: Today I started working at about 6 am with lights off before the sunrise. So I set the display backlight on my notebook at the minimum. I used notebook keyboard buttons for this. Then I realised that night light (which makes display colors warm) is already off. I opened Settings window, navigated to Devices -> Monitors screen and set the night light to the manual mode. I changed the upper limit to 8 am. The night light turned on immediately. Then I closed the Settings window. I worked for about an hour till 7 am. Then suddenly the backlight of the display started to turn full on about every minute. I changed it to the previous low level with the buttons but it kept turning full on in after about a minute. Changing any settings in the Power tab didn't help. The only thing that helped was: chmod -w /sys/class/backlight/*/brightness After I ran the command the problem is gone. The only effect I still see is: the slider in the Power tab of the settings window is switching to the full on position about every minute. Without any input from me of course. Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Reviewing your dmesg attachment in this bug report it seems that there is a problem with your hardware. I recommend performing a back up and then investigating the situation. Measures you might take include checking cable connections and using software tools to investigate the health of your hardware. In the event that is is not in fact an error with your hardware please set the bug's status back to New. Thanks and good luck! [This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.] ** Tags added: hardware-error ** Changed in: db5.3 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Low ** Changed in: db5.3 (Ubuntu) Status: New => Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to db5.3 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1737358 Title: package libdb5.3:i386 5.3.28-11 failed to install/upgrade: package libdb5.3:i386 is not ready for configuration cannot configure (current status 'half-installed') Status in db5.3 package in Ubuntu: Invalid Bug description: During system upgrade all memory including swap was use upgrade failed. Rationale: In order to enable apache2's support for HTTP/2, libnghttp2-14 must be in main (libnghttp2-dev is added as a b-d for src:apache2, but it can remain in universe). The other binary packages produced by src:nghttp2 should remain in universe. While upstream Apache still describes mod_http2 as 'experimental' (https://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.4/mod/mod_http2.html), we presumably want to enable it by 18.04. It makes sense to process this MIR now so that we can work through issues with HTTP/2 support during the 17.10 cycle. Rationale update: Upstream Apache has indicated 2.4.26 will 'unmark' mod_http2 has 'experimental': https://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.4/howto/http2.html#comments_section Rationale update v2: The public page referred above already has removed the note and marked http2 as an "extension". Quality assurance: The only package needed at runtime to be in main is libnghttp2-14 (current ABI) itself. As this is only a library, there is no configuration required after installation. No debconf questions are asked by default during the installation of libnghttp2-14. There are no long-term outstanding bugs against libnghttp2. Ubuntu bugs: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nghttp2 - There is one automated (it seems) report of a security issue with the 16.04 version. I have not yet confirmed if it was/is present in the latest versions. + I received a forward offlist between the bug reporter and upstream developer. This particular issue is in example code which documents potential usage, but is not part of the shipped library itself. Debian bugs: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?dist=unstable;src=nghttp2 - Two bugs, neither of which are serious. Upstream issue tracker: https://github.com/nghttp2/nghttp2/issues - There are currently 175 open issues for the upstream project. - It is not yet clear how many of these issues are in the core library vs. the binary tools built by the upstream project. The package seems to be well-maintained in Debian. The package does not interact with exotic hardware (or hardware at all). Based upon the latest build logs, some tests are run, but not all. I will investigate if all tests can be run during the build. The package's debian/watch file is current. UI standards: N/A, as the library is not a user-facing application. Dependencies: The only binary dependency of libngttp2-14 is libc6 which is in main. Standards compliance: The package meets the FHS and Debian Policy standards. Maintenance: I have subscribed Ubuntu Server to the nghttp2 source package as the "owning" team. Background information: There are significant improvements associate with HTTP/2. It was deferred in 16.04 because it was considered 'too new' at the time. While Apache still describes the mod as 'experimental' it feels like 18.04 must ship the module in order to promote/support its adoption during the 5-year support cycle for that LTS release. As it seems, the file /etc/resolv.conf was static and contained wrong data assigned by the NetworkManager. When I changed the file content manually to nameserver 127.0.0.53 DNS lookup worked fine. After reboot, however, I had to repeat this operation since NetworkManager seems to have replaced the file content. Finally, I found a solution. Running sudo dpkg-reconfigure resolvconf the file /etc/resolv.conf was replaced by the link /etc/resolv.conf -> ../run/resolvconf/resolv.conf Now, the wireless network seems to work properly. Also, heap growth: Change in memory (K/second): PID Process TypeSize RSS PSS 2666 qmlscene Heap0.00 0.39 0.39 (growing slowly) Since the RSS + PSS are growing I guess this is an anonymous mem- mapped region that is slowly filling up and populating physical pages and at sometime we may run out and the underying user space memory allocator will map a larger region for more heap. But as it is, it seems that the physical pages are slowly getting used which generally points to a slow leak somewhere. I suggest running valgrind on qmlscene to see if it can spot any heap leakages.
